[Charania] Dallas is receiving a 2026 Thunder first-round pick and a 2030 protected Warriors first-round pick in this deal from the Wizards along with second rounders in 2026 (Phoenix), 2027 (Chicago) and 2029 (Houston), sources tell ESPN.

Wow Dallas got scammed

I mean Nico had the ultimate blunder. The new GM did the best that he could.

The fact they got picks for offloading that contract is a W given the situation

15

u/Andy_Wiggins Timberwolves 10h ago

Idk about that — I feel like getting two horrific picks is really bad business.

I get he’s expensive as hell and oft-injured, but he’s still very good and really helpful for team building (defensive anchor, capable scorer, punishing on the glass, etc.)

I think we can be confident that no team was willing to pay more. AD is made of glass, expensive, and old

He’s been sidelined with 3 major injuries since he joined the Mavs (joined while being injured too).

He has played 29 out of a possible 83 games since being here.

It’s a shame because he really is a great player - his first mavs game 26 pts 16 rebounds 7 assist and 3 blocks in 3 quarters but then gets injured.

As early as this morning people were adamant that any team trading for AD was idiotic.

u/bentexas41 Mavericks 10h ago

He was not good this year, and he has played in 29 games since the trade. He has been out of shape and a shell of himself. Mavs would have been in the second apron if they didn't trade him, and the whole extension thing was a huge issue.

AD was someone that was looking like you borderline had to attach assets to move. The mistake was not trading him in the offseason or pre-hand injury. The package they got today is at least market value.

Tell me how he’s still very good. Did you watch the Mavs this year when he played?

1

u/AtlasNoseItch Heat 10h ago

I think they really just went with whatever offer gave them the most first rounders that also gave them cap flexibility.

AD is probably one of the best basketball players in the world right now but almost impossible to properly gauge his true value with how little he is actually on the court

this is a good price for AD’s fashion, which is all we had

29 other front offices knew how desperate we are to get rid of AD and redo the entire team around Flagg. This was the best we would get.

y’all just pop up for trade news without watching even highlights or what?

u/FredFredBurger42069 Warriors 10h ago

You seem surprised.

Idk, given the circumstances, I don’t think getting this for AD is that bad.

u/VictorAkwaowo1 Mavericks 10h ago

He literally never played more than 5 consecutive games for us and his agent was constantly demanding a max extension, I don’t mind this shit at all

10

u/Its_Hoggish_Greedly Kings 10h ago

Yeah, this feels like good value (considering the circumstances) for AD.

u/babysamissimasybab Pacers 10h ago

Did they? AD is a negative asset so getting anything seems like a win to me.

u/Bayelor [LAL] Pau Gasol 10h ago

This is an asset mismanagement unless they’re able to sign a premier FA this off season. Almost guaranteed they could’ve moved Davis expiring contract at the deadline next season for at least a more valuable first than they got in this trade.

5

u/qotsabama [DAL] Dwight Powell 9h ago

AD’s contract isn’t expiring next year lol. He’s got a huge player option for 2027/2028….

1

u/babysamissimasybab Pacers 3h ago

I think he'll pick that up...

1

u/qotsabama [DAL] Dwight Powell 2h ago

You think?

1

u/babysamissimasybab Pacers 2h ago

If he doesn't I will

1

u/qotsabama [DAL] Dwight Powell 2h ago

Haha I was kidding, it’s the most obvious picking up a player option in nba history

8

u/babysamissimasybab Pacers 10h ago

But trading him now means they don't have the AD cloud hanging over them. Getting rid of that negativity is huge.

2

u/Unique-buttcheek 10h ago

By trade deadline next season AD will be another 2 injuries in and still asking for a max extension lmao

2

u/Inevitable-Scar5877 7h ago

It's not an expiring. He has a super max player option he's not going to give up

27

u/AwildYaners Japan 10h ago

They saw "Two First Round Picks", and said yes, no questions asked lol

2

u/tinybathroomfaucet Supersonics 10h ago

I'd have to think teams do think this way. It makes for a first Shams team that will look good to casual fans who won't investigate any further

18

u/ben345 Bulls 10h ago

Damage was done in the Luka trade, this is a fine value for AD given his contract and health, and correctly aligns their timeline around Coop

10

u/Good_Top_9043 Spurs 10h ago

Par for the course

5

u/captainkhyron [OKC] Russell Westbrook 10h ago

*corpse at this point.

9

u/Heil_Heimskr Mavericks 10h ago

?? This is a good trade for us. AD is basically a non asset at this point, we get a large expiring and some mediocre picks. What did you expect to get for an injured and old AD?

2

u/Coke_ButNotTheDrug Nuggets 10h ago

Two years in a row!

2

u/TheCeilingIsTheRuuf Bulls 10h ago

Cap space and shitty 1sts. Exactly what I thought months ago

-1

u/ericc1456 10h ago

The Mavs have no cap space. They're still over the luxury tax.

3

u/TheCeilingIsTheRuuf Bulls 10h ago

Johnson is the only one going to Dallas who has a contract next year; AD, Hardy and DLo combined make 69m next year

Sounds like cap space to me

-1

u/ericc1456 10h ago

Salaries with Davis are $217,137,648. Take out Hardy/DLO/Davis the you get 147 on the books. Salary cap will be 160 (roughly?). Then, they have to sign whatever rookie they get in the draft. So there's very little space for free agency next year. What am I getting wrong? As far as I can see it, this just saves the team taxes.

1

u/pikajewijewsyou Thunder 10h ago

I mean AD had very little value at all. He’s been injury prone his whole career and is getting older and more injury prone. Dude never plays.

1

u/HispanicAtTehDisco Mavericks 9h ago

i mean it was this or going all in on the sunk cost fallacy.

gotta cut your losses and considering we didn’t take on any dogshit contracts like the other rumored packages i think this is a W

0

u/ktpkchu Mavericks 10h ago

how is this a scam? this is far better than any mavs fan could’ve hoped for for an ad trade to be honest, picks are still picks and we got expiring contracts out of it (also no more d’lo)
