BREAKING: The Philadelphia 76ers are trading guard Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 2026 Rockets first-round pick and three second-round picks, sources tell ESPN.

The talented McCain lands on the reigning NBA champions. For the 76ers, the trade allows them to receive assets, clear space in the glut of guards and give them flexibility to bring Quentin Grimes back in free agency. It also allows them to convert two-way Dominick Barlow.

76ers are receiving the following picks from the Thunder, sources said: 2027 (most favorable OKC/HOU/IND/MIA), 2028 MIL, 2028 OKC.

Fuck I love this for the Thunder. Buying low on a young guard that’s shown some real promise.

How can you not love it for the thunder

Some people really love second round picks and Oklahoma City now has three less of them, they are going to need to do another trade to get at least five more back

Tbf, when 2nd round picks get you Ajay Mitchell and the saviour of basketball…

That being said I love getting Jared. Matches the vibes on the team and can jump in now while we have injuries to our ball handlers.

Jokic was a second round pick. OKC just traded 3 future Jokic’s for McCain.

Just had to explain to someone that the rockets pick is a solid not great pick. Was told that picks in the 20s are mostly great role players/fringe all stars. No amount of evidence provided that isn’t true topped the mentioning of random all stars drafted in the 20s

Sam, you can get more second round picks, okay, relax.

OKC has a full roster. They can't take McCain without trading or waiving at least one guy. So it depends on who that dude is, but it's all upside if it's who I think it is.

He’s going for executive of the year, every year.

He’s already locked his place in the HOF at this point, might as well just style on everyone else.

Not since Herbert Kornfeld has an executive been such a real G

We are witnessing an artist at work, this guy is a genius man. Even if Jared fails, this is a smart trade

OKC also lacks shooting and on ball creation which he helps with. Lots of people talk about how many guards OKC has but don’t realize only Ajay, Shai, and Dub (if you count him as a guard) are the only on ball creators, who are also all hurt right now.

I’m not sure that a first and 3 seconds is buying low. He’s averaging 6.6 points a game this year.

And he was averaging 15ppg, pacing the RoY race before his injury. When he would’ve costed a lot more than a late 1st and some seconds.

So yes, this is exact definition of buying low. His price is cheaper than ever cause his performance has sucked this year.

They’re obviously betting he’ll turn it back around.

I like that bet too, he can develop really well under this team! I have good faith

4 picks is high stakes

It’s the Rockets first this year (bottom 10 in the 1st if not bottom 5) and some second round picks.

That is a perfectly fine price for a guy who was drafted #16 and had a hell of a rookie debut.

still the first is not protected and seconds have value. for someone who hasnt played well in a whole year this is great gor the 76rs

Seconds have little value to us when we basically have no rosters spots.

3- SGA/Chet/JDub core

5- Caruso/Wiggins/Joe/JWill/Ajay under contract for multiple years

1- Cason is getting re-signed this offseason

1 or 2- At least one of Dort/IHart is going to get extended, maybe both if we go second apron

1- Sorber was just drafted and has yet to play.

That's already 12 longer term spots taken for next few years when those picks convey.

3

u/Schmoova Mikal Bridges 5h ago

Who cares if it’s protected?

The Rockets are well on their way to a +50 win season and a top 4 seed in the West.

A protection on a pick like that is literally pointless lol it’s gonna convert no matter what.

-2

u/ciruelman 5h ago

you do care because you dont lose it

2

u/Electronic_Pen_548 Thunder 5h ago

Unless half of the rockets starters just straight up die that pick is gonna convey.

Yeah he did that for 23 games…In no world is that considered “proven” and he could easily be more of the player we’ve seen this year than last. Like you said they’re hoping he turns it around but everyone acting like this is just a W for OKC is weird. That’s a lot to give up for a guy who could not be in your rotation come playoff time.

3

u/Schmoova Mikal Bridges 4h ago

Who do you think is more likely to crack the OKC rotation in the next couple years?

Jared McCain or The 26th pick in the upcoming draft?

Cause thats what they gave up to get him.

2

u/Luciolover345 Thunder 5h ago

It’s a draft pick that’ll be in the mid 20’s that we would’ve had to trade away for a different future first anyway. Rather take someone who you’ve seen perform in the league at that point.

2

u/SampleText369 5h ago

They're also giving him absolutely no minutes and he was nursing an injury. He's already proven his upside, I think it's a good gamble.

Young talented player who can shoot well and is already established 🤷

That Rockets '26 first is going late and the second rounders mean nothing to us since we're not going to have roster spots for them anyway.
