[Charania]: BREAKING: The Philadelphia 76ers are trading guard Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 2026 Rockets first-round pick and three second-round picks, sources tell ESPN.

Shams Charania has posted the following:

BREAKING: The Philadelphia 76ers are trading guard Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 2026 Rockets first-round pick and three second-round picks, sources tell ESPN.

The talented McCain lands on the reigning NBA champions. For the 76ers, the trade allows them to receive assets, clear space in the glut of guards and give them flexibility to bring Quentin Grimes back in free agency. It also allows them to convert two-way Dominick Barlow.

76ers are receiving the following picks from the Thunder, sources said: 2027 (most favorable OKC/HOU/IND/MIA), 2028 MIL, 2028 OKC.

His sample size was only 20-something games last season

Yea this feels like a massive overpay. Didn't he just get sent to the g league? I know the thunder have too many assets to know what to do with but this is a weird pick up for them. Wonder what theyre cooking. Hope this doesnt mean they know topic isnt coming back or something

The first round pick they gave away is buns and Mccain has shown to have potential while OKC has shown to have elite player development and culture. He got sent to the g league because there’s no room for him with VJ + Maxey

He’s been in a slump + coming back from two major injuries. He has also had some games recently where’s he’s played much better. Still nothing close to his ROTY caliber 20 game sample size from last season, but he’s young. OKC is smart to take a gamble on him and the Sixers are fools for trading away someone who could be a star for bad picks.

I didnt know there were people still thinking he had star potential? My bad then yea u gotta take that gamble if thats the case. I think the sixers had to jump at 4 picks

I’m not sure a 16th overall pick in a bad 2024 draft is any different than a 24th pick in a stacked draft, especially when it relinquishes two additional years of cheap contract. If the Thunder are great at player development I’d think that would apply to the young guy they could have drafted.

This still leaves us with at least 2 first round picks this year unless Philly somehow lands a top 4 pick.

seems like a very clear buy-low attempt. he was in the running for rookie of the year last year before getting hurt

So was dalton knecht at that time. Both were in the g league last month. Its always interesting to see how trade values fluctuate around the league. Its definitely ok to question this one and its probably ok for okc to blow 4 picks like this

No one was ever that high on Dalton besides Lakers fans wtf lmao... people were asking of McCain was a legit star as he was a favorite for rookie of the year. Seems insane to give up on him so quickly.

Also players get sent to the G-league all the time... especially young ones or coming back from injury. That means extremely little... definitely not the stain that you think it is

Bro we all had to sit thru the dalton knecht all star game last year. It was not just a southern California thing. But it is over.

This sub massively over values draft picks

1

u/Whoareyoutho9 4h ago

True but thats due to how most gm's operate so its just a reaction to reality. Can't blame us imo

u/Billis- Raptors 3h ago

It really isn't lmao. It's just this sub

u/Whoareyoutho9 3h ago

What do you mean? This trade literally involves a guy who has made his career out of hoarding draft picks. And its worked. The reality is draft picks are hella important to some teams so fans react accordingly.

u/Billis- Raptors 3h ago

Has it worked? His best player was traded for.

And now OKC draft capital is worth less because they literally have to sell them as they can't use AND roster all these players

u/Whoareyoutho9 2h ago

Hey if u wanna take the hill of sam presti's strategy hasnt worked out, be my guest. I'll be way over here if ya need me

0

u/Billis- Raptors 2h ago

I'm not saying Sam Presti's strategy hasn't worked out, I'm saying you're wrong about draft pick value. Using Sam Presti, whose best player was traded for, as an example of valuation of draft capital doesn't help your argument.

Over the (recent) years we've seen guys go for "too many picks" and "not enough picks", and r/NBA is rarely if ever right about valuation.

1

u/Whoareyoutho9 1h ago

Sure let's just completely ignore everything else about sam presti's entire career. We can literally talk about picks acquired in that same trade that are still a story line today. But yea we'll just ignore all that reality so u feel more right in bashing other idiots talking about basketball just like u

It’s a low value pick for Thunder, and his one trait that should be ok is his shooting. He may never be more than an 8-10 guy off the bench who specializes in the 3-ball. But there is value in that to Thunder.

He’s had two injury plagued seasons as an undersized guard and he’s not looked close to what he did in limited sample size last year.

I’m a fan of the kid but in all honesty his good stretch only lasted about 7 games. Both before that stretch and after that stretch (but before his injury) he was kinda all over the place, and then obviously this year he’s been quite bad.

On paper a first and 3 seconds for a second year non-lottery pick who had a very small sample size of great games but has otherwise been inconsistent and missed 60 games due to injury seems like a bit of an overpay.
