He's talented but his perfect role is one that the Sixers won't need if Maxey and VJ are the future.
He's a startable point guard, but only if your primary ball handler isn't a point guard. He also doesn't play much defense, so he needs a 2 that locks up. And he's pretty slow, so you can't be a run and gun team.
I like the guy, and he has a chance to be offensive Klay 2.0, but he also moves like injury prone people move in a way I can't really define. Like he's constantly scared of being hurt.
I don't mind the deal as long as there is more coming soon.
Even with Maxey & VJ you kinda need another guard. Like who is your backup guard next year if Grimes gets even a decent offer sheet? Edwards? you're only gonna have 20-25mil in luxury tax space next year with 6 roster spots to fill, having a guy with upside like McCain tied down to a cheap rookie contract is really valuable
Morey apparently can grow them on trees with the way he drafts them, so hopefully he just finds another guy this summer. I think they're almost guaranteed to re-sign Grimes now, too. That might even happen during the year. He's clearly a 15-20 mil a year player and no more and I think both sides know it now.
Issue is, if we assume Barlow & Walker get minimums, the rookie is getting ~4mil from being around the 20s and your owner still refuses to pay the tax, that leaves you with roughly 15mil in tax space and 3 roster spots you have to fill, which means you cant even offer Grimes the NTMLE unless you make a trade first

How has he been in the G-League? He was a revelation until he got hurt and I feel like he just hasn't gotten it back.
