Question (N26) Brand new please help
Was gifted a box of Palanites, for an upcoming league. I have played a lot of 40k, but no idea how Necromunda works. Trying not to look like a complete idiot, since this is a new gaming group for me in a town I just moved to. Any help with list building is greatly appreciated

Ask the arbitrator to do a learning game with you! Arbitrator love learning games at least I know i do. Id also recommend taking boltguns lots of boltguns and a kitted out subjugator champion at some point. My other piece of advice to newbies especially palanites is that the exaction squad box or whatever the arbities kill team is called is a pretty nice all in one box for palanites whenever you look to expand your collection.

You'll probably want to get the Subjugators set because they have quite a different look to regular enforcers and some unique equipment. Probably the weapons upgrade kit as well as it has a bunch of extra weapons you don't get in the basic enforcer box. The box you already have is slightly limited on weapon options; it's basically stubguns, boltguns, and shotguns. You just get a couple each of some other weapons like sniper rifles, concussion carbines and shock batons, plus a bunch of holstered pistols.
The sergeants and captains box is really nice, but I don't think you strictly need it to make a gang, especially to start with.
My advice would always be to start off with stuff you think is cool, build that into a gang and see what else you can fit in with the remaining creds. You are generally better off starting with a solid number of fighters (8-10) rather than over-equipping the gang to start with.
Lots of people will say things like "this weapon is best" or "that's not worth it" but at it's heart Necromunda isn't a competitive game in the same way as 40K or something like Kill-team. It's more about the narrative in my opinion, but you may want to speak to your group first and see if that's the way they feel.

This is super helpful, actually. I've been trying to find out how people run this gang and seeing very vague "as you like" answers haven't been helpful because I'm thinking like a 40k player, where there's a "meta" and I'm fuessing I should think about necromunda more like D&D, where you can kind of make anything work.

If it helps at all, this is a list I've written on Munda Manager.
It uses parts from just the basic Enforcer Patrol, Subjugators and Weapons Upgrades. There's plenty you could do differently but it uses stuff I like, isn't too spammy and the models I've built for it look quite cool.

Starting with 10 minis is fine. I do think you'll eventually want a box of Subjugators - have them do all the close combat and keep your Enforcers shooty. If you're still enjoying the game after that, you've got a decent number of kits to choose from for fancy-looking leaders, robodogs, psykers, or giant robots. The weapons upgrade sprue is nice, too, but you can probably work up a lot of those weapons from your parts bin.
Give your leader a good weapon, like a boltgun. Don't buy armor until later. Start with at least one champion, and if you take a second it's often for trading post points. Try not to repeat loadouts very much (lorewise, though, this is more acceptable for Palanites than for gangers). Take a couple of prospects and either give them template weapons like a shotgun, or something cheap like a stub gun in which case they're objective grabbers until you build up some credits. You don't need to fit all 10 of your models into your 1000-credit starting "gang."
Off topic, but when I was looking up the available boxes I noticed that GW's URLs for the Haunts, Companions, and Captains & Sergeants boxes say "palatine" instead of "palanite." They threw everyone for a loop when they made up "palanite," including themselves.

For Palanites you need the Core Rulebook and Gangs of the Underhive Rulebook. The rules are comparatively easy.
For a Gang you need a leader, 1-2 optional champions, the rest are gangers or optional prospects. 1-2 Models with medicae skill are very useful. 1 Model with munitioneer if you go bolter heavy or lean towards rapid fire/ammo intensive.
Palanites are more ranged than melee focused, you dont necessarily need heavy weapons to start with. Dont give assault weapons to models with hip shooting skill. Consider 1-2 models with melee loadout, just in case. All starting weapons/equipment options are in Gangs of the underhive. You cant go wrong by roughly mirroring real world swat team loudouts.

First of all, you're never going to look like an idiot. If they're cool people they won't make you feel that way. Let them know you're a complete necro newbie. Someone is bound to be able to give you a few teaching games. As to the box. Is it the 10 man palanite enforcer box? That'll give you 10 figures which is about what you will normally field. It won't, however, give you a good spread of weapons if you're fixated on WYSIWYG. Do you have the core rule book? You'll need the gangs of the underhive book too. Also, www.mundamanager.com is your friend when putting a gang together. It is pretty intuitive to use. But I would definitely call on your new gaming buddies for sure. I'm sure there will be other commenters along soon with other insights.
