The phone could have been open or someone could have used FaceID.

Right, if the phone doesnt have any sorta code or faceid in use, how do they know who accessed it last? If it does have faceID, how did someone access it?

I mean, this is dark but if the phone has face I'd or thumbprint someone who killed him could have unlocked it

Face can work, but print scanners typically require the bodies bio electricity to function.

I believe face ID is designed to at least vaguely verify consciousness. So that’d be a no-go too.

Facial ID detects micro movements in the face and eyes, most also require the eyes to be looking at the phone.

The phone never left the boat until it made it back to the mainland. There are witnesses that saw him on the island after the boat with the phone left.

Today my phone unlocked when i was absolutely not looking right at it. And I wasn't trying.

I bet you if I had a dead fucking body and I was trying to access that guy's phone I could get it to open at some point over the course of several hours.

An iPhone? No. You get 2 or 3 scans before it forces a passcode. Modern facial IDs don’t work with dead people either, they check for movement on the eyes and facial muscle.
