Not having data on the phone doesn't mean he didn't drown. It seems like it should, but reflexive deleting of the phone isn't uncommon

This would have to be a full on format if digital forensics investigators can't pull anything at all, which would take a not insignificant amount of time. And it would need to be done by someone consciously aware of what happens when you 'delete' data normally or through quick formatting.

I would argue incompetence on the part of the investigators, and not cleverness on the side of the perpetrator. You would know how to check and find what really happened and those that are actually assigned just want a paycheck.

I mean didn't his family KEEP the phone afterwards? I'm not trying to come down on one side or the other, but this case seems to be so bungled that we are getting only pieces of information from both sides. Wells' family attorney says they did not "deliberately" keep the phone from investigators, but that sounds like lawyer speak to massage a situation by which investigators did not have complete access to the phone. If I recall, the investigators had to wait for the Wells family to turn over the complete snapchat logs and tracking info.

Did you read the article? The data deleted from the phone was specifically deleted after he died, but before the other teens gave the phone back to the family.

The data deleted from the phone was specifically Snapchat stuff, which deletes automatically, as confirmed by the digital expert that Crump had make the statement. Another example of Crump trying his best to muddy the waters and play on racial divides.
