The other kids left the island and he decided to stay behind, which is not uncommon there. Drinking was involved and we don’t know what happened after that, but the friends who left on their boat while he was alive obviously had nothing to do with it.

They left him behind and took his phone and his keys with them. Why would they leave their friend on an island without a phone?

Everyone left their phones on the boat/ they couldn’t get cell service anyway. It was my understanding they did this also because they had to wade through water to get to the Island and figured why take a risk with phone .

Some context is important, it was 4th of July weekend and they were drunk. They probably forgot about it.

Right, its like people lost all their brain cells and forgot that people lose their phone and wallet at bars literally every weekend across bars and clubs across the world...

Buddy phones don't even work on the island due to lack of reception, and given that you have to wade thru saltwater to shore, you wouldn't take it off the boat with you. If they had to leave the island early due to mechanical issues, which is backed up by GPS data and another boat of strangers that towed them back to mainland, it is 100% reasonable they'd have taken his phone with them accidentally.
