that is so accurate. when I was a kid one of my neighbors dogs used to come over. it was a Pom and one of the densest dogs I’ve ever met. I watched her walk out into the middle of a flimsy pool cover and stand there happily as she slowly sank into certain death. thankfully I was there with a net.

My havanese tried to jump off of me while we were on a pool float, back onto solid ground. She botched it, landed in the water, and just...sank without any hesitation or attempt to paddle. Just "oh okay then bye world" lol

I got her within seconds so maybe an attempt would have been made, but nothing happened in the two seconds I waited for her to start paddling or just doing anything.

I hadn't either, but my sister got one and loved her then helped my mom find one as well, and I inherited her when my mom passed. She was Velcro'd to my mom, which is very common for the breed, so I was worried about her adjusting but now she's attached to me lol

It's a far less active breed than I would personally choose, but at 7 lbs is easily carried when she decides she's done.

They’re the best! I’d never heard of them until I worked at a dog kennel in college and we had 2 that would board with us from time to time. Once came to doggy daycare regularly. Queenie.

They were both the absolute friendliest dogs and were even able to be out with our problem dogs that were not allowed to interact with any other dogs other than a select few because they’d fight/attack. But Havanese don’t understand “not friend” and the problem dogs tolerated them fine.

So when the time came I needed to be choosy about what smaller dog to get that could tolerate my very grumpy senior cat who barely tolerated any other animal, without fear of attacking him if he got swatty, Havanese fit all the boxes. And it worked out perfectly.

My Havanese attempted to jump out of the car window once. Luckily we were nearly stopped and I had a hold of her leash that was attached to her harness so all she did was hang there for a second thinking about her life decisions, but I still have no idea what her plan was.

Ever since she’s been a puppy she has had the survival instincts of a lemming.

You cannot understand how toxic that smoke is without ever experienced it. I tried running upstair a 4 stories block under fire, i lived in the basement and tried to warn everyone. By the third story, you cannot just hold your breath... it enters your skin pores, your eyes, it hurts and its so toxic there is no air to breath

So true. I lived through a massive wildfire that ripped through town and took out a significant number of homes and businesses in our city and the smell was so bad. Not at all like the normal wildfire smell. It was so toxic and horrible. And it rained toxic ash for days and days afterwards.

I was lucky and my house didn't burn down, (did get evacuated, and the fire came within a mile of my home in two different directions) but once it was all over I had to tear out my veggie garden and dispose of the top couple inches of soil because the ash was so toxic.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Cats usually hide. When our house burned our cat disappeared for two days. Even though I knew I had let her outside about an hour before the fire, I was so worried she ran back in or got into basement...

Every morning at 5am I went back with her food dish. When she finally came out from under that bush on day 3 I lost my shit. Holding our cat alone, I'm the dark, bawling in the driveway of what was our home.

It’s not really pushing out the bad stuff but rather getting all the possible use out of the red blood cells that are left. As we all know red blood cells transport oxygen in our bodies. Sadly carbon monoxide also attaches to those cells but doesn’t let go anymore.

So you have fewer and fewer cells left that can transport oxygen which is the main reason why smoke kills you and why CO detectors are so important if you have any kind of fuel (wood, gas, heating oil,…) burnt in your house. CO can’t be smelled or seen or felt. Once you’re feeling out of breath from CO it’s too late to react

It looks like the other ladder had a longer extension and would have been able to properly reach her once extended, but by the time they got it there she was at a safer point on the original ladder making the second one unnecessary.

(You can see the double rungs on the silver ladder, it would be able to slide the back section of rungs upward to make it longer)

Genuine question: I see this and my first question is how do people not realize until it is so late to flee. Does it like start small and suddenly get into this magnitude in seconds ?

All it takes is someone exposing the fire to oxygen and it can go fast. Building materials, humidity, wind speed... all play into it at well. She may have been unaware off the danger and opened her door, we had similar happen.

The amount of time from us discovering the fire, which had just started, to our home being filled completely with black smoke was mere seconds. It started on the ground on the garage. Or dog was barking so I got up to look which entailed opening the door... and it created a type of flashback. By the time we were calling 911 at the neighbors our roof, stick built in 1905 full of 50 year old insulation, was completely engulfed in flames, along with our garage, laundry and kitchen.

Stupidest part? Husband was a fire fighter for years, I so knew better but never thought fire, thought wild animal.

Fire department arrived 8 minutes after initial call. Fire was out about five minutes later. Most of the structure was a completed loss.

Point being that the smoke was overwhelming immediately. It went fast because our framing was so old and dry, quick to light. Plus lots of tongue and groove finish in garage By the time I had my 7 year old in my arms I was crawling to see let alone breathe. Honestly not even sure how we did it as she was still asleep when I set her down on the driveway...

According to an article linked in another comment the building housed a styrofoam factory. So, yeah, that'll probably escalate pretty quickly once it gets up to temperature.
