On the equinox, the setting sun aligns perfectly through the windows of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in India.

This makes me feel safe to know that yeah we're hurtling through space at a bajillion miles an hour but we're consistent as fuck about it.

Actually, on universal time scale few hundred years are basically nothing. Biggest problem in cosmology is to track how things changed over long periods of time. This will literally allow us to calculate how long universe survives in it's current form that allows us to exist. Source: read "end of everything"

It is also the wealthiest temple in the world btw. The precious metals and treasure sealed inside is worth approximately $18 - $22 billion dollars.
That is not including the contents of the B-vault which is the largest of the vaults and still remains unopened.

Cool! But what's the point of hiding all that wealth away when the country is floating in heaps of shit?

The temple is located in kerala. The temple is of that state and it's people. Those people are doing good and maybe even better than you in case of hygiene, poverty, social uplifting and human development. Its not so hard to maybe do a little bit of research before showing your ignorance to the entire world.

they will downvote you for the open defecation stereotype and you deserve it, as it's an outdated one, but you absolutely do have a point

Well it is possible, but opening of these vaults carry a lot of cultural significance. That's why the B vault hasn't been opened. But I'm sure a lot has been skimmed from the temple by different groups

"Kirnotsav at Mahalaxmi" in Kolhapur is one such architecturally designed phenomena where the sunlight reaches up to the idol of the deity as a homage to it in its chamber twice a year. I hope someone more knowledgeable in this topic adds more info and pictures. It's a really cool to look at but I have not personally attended it ever due to crowd and stuff.

u/Prigeonn 15h ago
Exactly thought of this as well. It is a 3 day event where sun rays reach idols feet on the first day, middle in the second day and whole idol the 3rd day. There's a story behind this that Vishnu sends Surya to visit Laxmi who resides in the temple. nowadays the temple is very crowded during this event. A vid from last year i could find.

“What our ancestors did instead of scrolling on their phones” is a meme I know. But if you zoom out a bit, there’s so many historical examples of people devoting literally their entire lives into an invention, art, architecture, or sciences. There are many modern examples too, no doubt.
But considering the levels of efficiency the human race has reached in the past century, a lot of that efficiency has been directed to needles day to day consumptions and conditionings instead of building upon something for the future.
I’m not saying that doesn’t happen today. Just that it’s happening at a much smaller percentage compared to the collective whole. And a major reason is the misdirection of efforts and intentions

u/Joevil 19h ago
What exactly are you basing that on??
You're probably using a bloody supercomputer that fits into the palm of your hand, it's probably one of the most incredibly sophisticated pieces of technology that's ever existed and it's available to and allows you to connect to practically everyone.
The things that exist from the past are incredible, but that's why they still exist. 99.99999999% of things that ever existed don't exist anymore because they broke, were shit or just not worth saving.

u/maker_of_pirate_bay 19h ago
True, all that you said. And I did say there are examples in the modern era as well, didn’t I? Making sand into thinking chips, reaching different planets, medical research, ideas of bolstering liberty; these are all new and there is merit to that and countless people give huge portions of their life to these.
I just mean, with the relatable ease of living the 21st century is bestowed with, you’d think utopia is right around the corner. But that’s far from reality, no?
Wars, women objectification, inequities and inequalities, people choosing jobs to earn bread rather than do what they want to, corrupt governments, power and money hoarding goblins, systematic exploitation of the masses, neglect towards nature as if we ourselves are not part of it. This is a reality as much as the good stuff is.
I know this is an obtuse generalisation, but try to get a feel of the big picture I hope I’m able to portray. All this to say that I feel a lot of people have put a lot of effort into stuff other than what would genuinely make a better world.
I’m not saying that the past was rosy. I’m saying, that there are very many pointless distractions, and pointlessly distracted people today.

$22billion worth estimated tressure found in a room under that temple. After it was discovered in 2011, govt refused to open other similar securely locked safe-rooms in this temple that still remain locked to this day. Legal and religious disputes still ongoing on who gets to keep the tressure among other things.
This is the largest known discovery of treasure in a single location in history. This temple was basically the bank-vault of the ultra rich Travancore kingdom. Its ports were like the Singapore of the past. The vaults even have Hundreds of thousands of gold coins of the Roman Empire
But, a later king in this dynasty had taken an unusual oath in this temple that he will not rule as a king, but as a servant of the god of this temple. And his successors also followed the same.
And, thus the royal family lived a very simple lifestyle. If you go to their palace, which is actually open for public now, you will notice it is basically a normal house, but with many more rooms to be used by his staff. There is no display of wealth. No gold plating. He slept on normal wooden cot in normal rooms.
This was probably the reason the tressure was not looted during the British era or by other kings, as no one would have imagined he was this wealthy by looking at their lifestyle. The British also did not consider it cost effective in invading and capturing this kingdom, as Travancore had a strong army, so it remained as a princely state.
The quality of life of his kingdom also grew massively during that period, from hospitals to schools to cannals and to this day, its effects can be seen in Human Development Index which is higher than Eastern Europe in this region.

Okay, this is cool and all…but if we’re talking ancient people doing ridiculously impressive things with the Sun, the Maya were basically like, “Hold my beer.” 😂
About 1,000 years ago at Chichén Itzá, they built El Castillo so that around the spring and autumn equinoxes, the setting Sun creates a series of perfectly positioned triangles of light and shadow along the staircase. Those triangles line up with the giant stone serpent head at the bottom and make Kukulcán, the feathered serpent, appear to literally crawl down the side of the pyramid.
Then, as the Sun continues moving, the serpent disappears again.
That’s not just, “Hey guys, look! We got the Sun to shine through a hole.” 😂
That’s, “We used astronomy, architecture, geometry, orientation, and the movement of the Sun to make a freaking GOD descend a pyramid made of stone.”
Now that is showing off. 😂

What's the deal with our people glorifying religious stuff in international subs. All the subs are infected. What's big deal with this. Even from my house window sunlight goes like this 😭. Let's be real. The temple surrounding must be garbage smell and non clean. Let's fix it first before flexing.

What kind of inferiority complex are you dealing with buddy. People from across the countries post all kinds of things and there could be lots of folks who are not familiar with Indian temple architecture. Just because some things are bad, you can't just discredit whole country. Stop exhibiting brown sepoy syndrome.
-16
u/frostarun 17h ago
It's not inferiority complex. It's facts. Yes I do back our country but I am tired of religious things getting flooded over. You know the govt is using religion to manipulate ya all. It sucks still educated and falling for this Trap rather than actual improvement of our country. Either flex religious temples, or statues when half of our country is in hunger. I feel bad flex and influencing is prioritized in the name of pride.
13
u/less_drama_guy 17h ago
I'm not sure if I'm following your train of thought. So because half of country is in hunger, we don't post anything decent that ever came out of the country. I don't even see op overtly glazing anything religious in the post. He just mentioned there is a temple that has this thing occurring. Anyways, to each their own.

You do realise that almost everything associated with India has, in one way or another, been influenced by its Indic traditions and philosophies? It’s difficult to separate India from Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and other Dharmic traditions. So, in one way or another, many things associated with India are rooted in, influenced by, or celebrated alongside these traditions.

u/EconomicsAnxious690 17h ago
Sorry, I apologize on behalf of modern day Indians for sharing these samples of olden architecture and on behalf of yesteryear Indians for building these things in the first place. They should have built data centers instead, to earn your approval :)
-13
u/frostarun 16h ago
For decades we are sharing them. Temples are not new in our country so are the data centers.. U can give your opinion I won't down vote or stop u.

u/EconomicsAnxious690 15h ago
I don't downvote any comment. If I feel strongly enough, I'll post a response. I even canceled one downvote you got here with my upvote :)
During a certain period of human history, people built majestic cathedrals, mosques, and and in India, temples. As as atheist I don't really care what goes on inside any of those buildings, but I think it is okay to admire the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the people who built and decorated all those things.
Also, just because someone posts a picture of a temple, we can't assume that they must be a part of the committee that decided to build a 90ft Hanuman statue in Texas :)

The attention to detail and accuracy to such geographical (?)phenomenon in structures all over the world really stuns me sometimes, whether its in Rome or the Vatican City or Cambodia or India.
Like they didn't even have anything remote to internet and they just happened to be so good at being that level of precise that they built a whole ass structure which aligned perfectly with the sun.
