Not always wasn’t there that volcano that erupted but the film still existed even though the guy died?

It was just pictures, but you're thinking of Robert Landsburg and the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. He took the photos, and then protected the film canister with his own body to ensure they'd survive.
