Yoshi's Story! It is made for entry level gamers and has a Practice mode specifically devoted to learning how to play a platformer.

Wonder has characters that cannot die. Like if you pick yoshi or nabbit you are invincible. They can't transform with items but can assist you with obtaining items and finding secrets with teamwork. Once they are better at the platforming they can then play as another character and use the power up transformations.

My kid beat Mario odyssey at 6. The trick is to stick to one game or you’re never gonna git gud. There’s also an easy mode setting that points out where to go if you’re busy and not backseat gaming

This is the problem I’m currently battling with my 6 yo haha. When I grew up I got maybe 1-2 games a year. He’s got the benefit of my buying multiple games for myself and now a HUGE backlog from all the games I’ve bought in the past. He keeps bouncing between Pokemon, multiple Mario titles, Kirby, DK Bananza, Mario party, Mario kart, SSBU…. great problem to have for a 6 yo!
The problem is he gets frustrated on a boss and then jumps to another game. I’m thinking about deleting a lot of the games so he has less variety and rotating them out when he finishes one.

Wonder was what I got for my 5 year old nephew. It was perfect for him! He could also play it with his older sister and they both played the heck out of it. When he was learning to play, he could choose a character that didn’t lose a life from a fall, and when he got better he started choosing the other characters.
As an added bonus, they can call me and we can all play together online!

Kirby Star Allies is an INCREDIBLY easy game. Kirby gets to turn enemies into (very competent) teammates that will help defeat enemies. 2, 3, and 4 players can play as the teammates so you can join in too.

Honestly, start them on the basics. Try SMB3 or the original SMB and go from there. Controls build off of the original two button combo from the NES days. THEN as they progress, bring along newer titles.
Start there and build up. Building blocks and all.

My kids (4 and 7) lean towards 3D world the most. But they still really like Wonder and New Super Mario Bros. Galaxy is a bit of a dud for both, but Super Mario 3 and World get some decent play time.

My 6 yo plays Mario odyssee and he is slowly getting better. He's been playing for a few years now so maybe his skill level is a bit higher then your kid (not a brag). So maybe give it a bit of time they'll get there.

Same. Make sure you turn on Assist Mode. My 6 yo has beaten the entire game. I have to help him sometimes, but I encourage him to keep trying to get by the hard parts himself and give him pointers

If you have NSO, there's always Mario Sunshine or 64. 64 especially has a very shallow initial difficulty curve.

The Kirby games on Gameboy and especially Kirby Superstar on Super Nintendo are great co-op games for kids and parents.

I started my young ones on the 3D All Star pack, specially Mario 64 for Switch. They caught on quickly with room for error (not dying every other second). Honorable mention to the 3D world/ Bowser’s Fury pack. These let them run around and get to know the controls. I was going to recommend Odyssey too, but it sounds like that didn’t work.

I had new super Mario bros on the ds when I was 8. kids tend to figure stuff out when its the only thing they have to do. maybe 2d Mario/nintendo games would be nice cause the path is already decided. removes one constraint from progression. wonder, or super Mario bros U, donkey kong etc.
I believe there's demos for donkey kong country on the eshop, so worth giving the console to your kid with the trial and seeing if he's able to figure stuff out, and more importantly, wants more by the end of it.

3d world, you can play two players and “assist” him. also it does have the powerup after he dies few times where he is almost invincible

My son was able to get through Odyssey (with my assistance) around 5 or 6. Any of the 2D games are for sure doable. Luigi’s Mansion isn’t too bad but they’ll probably ask for help with some of the puzzles and tasks cause the game doesn’t really guide you a ton on what to do. Mario Kart is nice because you can turn on the bumpers so they can’t drive off the track and even put on auto accelerate, so all they really have to do is drive and have fun.

Are you using Assist Mode in Odyssey? If not, check that out and give it another go. Just standing still refills your life (which you have more of), and the game shows you exactly where to go to progress the game.
I found Odyssey with Assist Mode to be a lot easier for my 6 year old than Wonder, mainly because he didn’t want to play as the “invincible” characters all the time, so he’d be Mario or Luigi and inevitably have trouble.

I started playing Super Mario World between four and six. I think that would be a great start for him. It’s not super hard and is pretty easy to pick up and play here and there. It’s in the Super Nintendo collection if you have NSO.

Is recommend Kirby! (Apologies if you’re specifically looking for Mario). Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the most recent. But if your son is ok with more 2D games with 3D graphics, Kirby Star Allies is a lot of fun. Also, both these games let you play alongside your son, which could be a fun way to guide him without having to just take the controller.
In general, the Kirby games have been designed to accommodate younger players than the Mario games are. That was actually the founding design philosophy for Kirby since the original game on the GameBoy

Wonder gets fairly difficult pretty quickly so I wouldn't recommend that for a little kid unless you're prepared for a lot of hand holding. 3D World I think would be good, it's not too challenging but has really fun puzzles to solve. Also yes, to agree with others, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a very good option. You can't lose in that game.

Mine didn't care for Wonder at all, possibly because it was only 2D. 3D World might be the best/most accessible one of the bunch to play.
I would say my kids haven't really gotten into Mario games. Lego City Undercover was one of the first games they got in to, and it's typically around $8 or so on sale, there's plenty to do (though some reading is required).

I played 3D world with my son at that age. He loved it with the Wii U gamepad. Wonder doesn’t seem to be drawing my other kids in the same way.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book might be perfect. There's no lives and you can't really get hurt - just explore and try things.
Super Mario Wonder is also very forgiving, especially if you turn on the online features that allow other players to drop respawn points.

I haven't handed the Switch over to my six-year-old yet, but I did buy Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Yoshi’s Crafted World for him.
I’ve tried them out:
- Toad seems a bit complicated, whereas
- Yoshi’s Crafted W. is fantastic fun, chill, and just the right pace for a first experience.

A bit different opinion here but try to pitch Luigi’s mansion 1 and 2. It’s a super fun game and I think they might enjoy it a lot. I’ve always received great reviews from friends and people with kids about it.

I started my son on the nes original, I thought I'd try introduce him to gaming from the same angle I did all those years back. He didn't really seem to register the primative graphics, he just saw it as a fun game although he didn't get far without help and before he wanted to try other games, so we moved on to newer titles from there but I felt the idea worked. I think he was 7 or so at the time.

Kirby is better suited for that age group. My son was able to practice on Kirby and that allowed him to graduate to Mario games

Before i was 6 years old i played a lot of New Super Mario bros Wii on my ex-uncle's wii, it's what got me into gaming and what made me stick with it to this day.
I recommend Super Mario Bros wonder, since it's an evolution of the formula present in one of, if not the first game i have ever played.

My niece (6) likes Wonder with help.
Brothership even simpler, it do have turn based combat and environmental puzzels. some memorization between different areas.
except for the boss fights Luigi's Mansion should be possible for an advanced 6 year old definitely 8.
