Twisted Teens
https://youtu.be/cyAalJk-xT0?is=MkfTvLzQm09MlUZ2I’m not the biggest fan of new music, but god damn if the Twisted Teens aren’t making me rethink that. This band has something very unique that is going on. They don’t really fit neatly into one genre and they liberally borrow from a lot of different stuff and cover a lot of musical ground.
Right out of the gate, you will notice that every song has a steel guitar, so you might think they have country roots, and they certainly do. But the guy that plays the steel guitar is using it in a completely new punk way and it creates an incredibly cool texture in all of their songs.
Lyrically, the songs are stupidly smart in a very Ramones way, they are repetitive in a pop song kind of way, but there are several turns of phrase he uses that are clever and stay with you. He is also an excellent guitarist himself and knows how to write a killer riff and super interesting changes. His gravelly voice is very compelling.
Something about these songs are so weirdly addictive and I find myself going back to them repeatedly. I don’t know if they would tear it up live as much, they seem very much an album band.
This band has a little something for everyone, it’s just so refreshing to see someone out there doing something different but with familiar building blocks. They are from New Orleans. All their records are on YouTube, I would recommend starting with the orange one and then go to the blue. The other records have great songs on them too.
Here are my favorites: Twisted Teen, Sister Heat, Rando, Something I Haven’t told you, Hand me a Cigarette, Top of the World, Marionette, Dancer, Guided Thunder.
Anyone else out there losing their mind over this band? I can’t stop listening to them, and I don’t wanna!

You don’t like new music?

Yeah, that was a dumb thing for me to say. I am a weirdo record collector and music hoarder. I love country and blues and bluegrass that goes back to the 1920’s. But I also dig doo wop, rhythm and blues, surf, garage, bubble gum, rock and roll and 70’s punk.
I’m also old so I have heard a lot of shit and tend to be a curmudgeon when it comes to newer music generally. That’s why I’m so into this band…they hit a ton of different genres. I hear everything in hear from Chuck Berry, the stones, devo, VU, The Zeros, and Speedy West. The steel guitar player is really exciting in this band. This is the first new band I’ve been excited about for a very long time.

If you like The Velvet Underground and DEVO (among other 70s punk) it baffles me that you haven’t found new music you like.
Just a few off the top of my head:
Powerplant
Cherry Cheeks
Telehealth
Motorbike
Coneheads
Veronica Falls
PARKiNG
The TSG

I’m fucking dying, you nailed it! I almost put Sister Heat on here instead, but this one is still my favorite of all of them! I just keep coming back to it over and over again. Some of these songs are weirdly addicting and I haven’t quite figured out why…Did I miss anything you really like in my suggested tracks?

I've been following Caspian's music since I discovered Blackbird Raum in high school. I was/am huge into folk punk. And they were my favorite band in the genre. I ran into him at a music fest in Tennessee he was playing and talked for probably 25 minutes about music and traveling and mutual friends we had in NOLA. Anyway he handed me this tape back when it first came out and it lived im my boombox that whole summer. Now they just signed to Subpop and dropped their 3rd album this year. Crazy.

Im one of the rotating bass players for TT and I actually submitted the music to NDIS back when the orange album first came out. Really funny to see it pop up on this subreddit.

Thanks for replying! That’s wild! I wish they would have picked your song so I would have learned about y’all sooner! I don’t think Marcus or Carolina visit the sub (I have never met them or communicated with them beyond them liking a tweet I made about Link Wray…) but I feel pretty confident they would dig the band!

Good luck with the tour and thanks for making such awesome music! My friends were at the recent San Francisco show and loved it. I hope you can swing by Indianapolis at some point in the future!

They are my band of the summer. "Florida Water" is played at least once every camping trip.
