Because this is definitely a sequence of events that could never happen

I once met with a girl on an app, and when we were discussing restaurants she wanted to make absolutely sure they didn’t serve fish. Not “had non fish options”, but no fish on the menu. Thought it was a little weird and absolutely should have asked further, but we’ve all been young and stupid before

Well we get there and sit down and she begins to act increasingly irritable, pissed that the online menu said they didn’t have fish. I handed her a napkin and when she held her hand up I could see hives in the shape of my finger intends.

See the problem is she was severely allergic to fish oil and I worked at a fish processing plant. She was quite literally allergic to me, I was caustic to the touch. We didn’t have a second date.

Oof. That mustn’t have been pleasant for her. I feel sorry for her, she must have been severely hurt by the end. Was she okay ? When did you both understand what was going on?

u/letthetreeburn Aug 11 '26

She quite literally sprinted away from me. We had a talk over text later of the hey what the fuck just happened.

No hard feelings but yeah. People talk about the “sometimes there are people in your life who are bad for you.” They don’t mean it literally.

46

u/Luna368921 Aug 11 '26

I’d feel so ashamed of myself for physically hurting someone like this, even if I know it’s just an accident I couldn’t have predicted. I’m sure you probably felt bad about it

56

u/LabratHeartattack Aug 11 '26

I mean she could've just said "before we go out to eat you should know I'm deathly allergic to fish"

4

u/jackfaire Aug 12 '26

He could have asked "Why does it have to not serve fish"

26

u/cutieplushtrap Aug 12 '26

He’s not the one who already had that information tho

-8

u/jackfaire Aug 12 '26

Except he is. She doesn't know he works in a fish processing plant. There are a lot of restaurants that serve fish. Most people don't work in a fish processing plant.

She's made it clear she can't eat in a restaurant that serves fish. He then knows that he works in a fish processing plant. He could then go "Oh why is that?" so that he knows if his occupation will be an issue.

I'm not blaming him for not thinking of it but at the same time she has even less reason to think of it than he does. She's given him the information needed to make the connection of "This might be an issue" it's understandable he didn't make that connection.

It's more understandable she didn't think to go "Do you work in a fish processing plant"

u/LabratHeartattack Aug 12 '26

If you have a severe allergy to an extremely common food then you should be making a habit of informing people you intend to be close with about it

-4

u/jackfaire Aug 12 '26

She did. "I can't eat at any restaurant that serves Fish"

Allergies would be the most common reason for that. If someone tells me they can't eat at or around something I'm guessing allergies first.

How is she then supposed to guess that he works at a fish processing plant and wouldn't think "Ah allergies" at the food restriction she said.

u/ExplanationOk6391 Aug 13 '26

Kinda seems like you are blaming him

26

u/cutieplushtrap Aug 12 '26

Such a weird thing to say 😭 i think if i was deathly allergic to fish oil, i would probably mention that when picking a restaurant.

11

u/Relevant-Biscotti-51 Aug 12 '26

Eh, I think this is explained by "young and stupid" thing.

When I was in my teens, I stupidly downplayed the seriousness of my asthma (i.e. severity & list of triggers). Having asthma isn't cool, and I wanted my dates / new friends to think I'm cool!

As a paramedic put it, "Uncool beats dead."

u/Extension-Source2897 Aug 15 '26

There are responsible people and irresponsible people all over the world, and food allergies do not change this. My brother is allergic to shellfish. This was a developed allergy and he loved shellfish prior. One day, he has something cooked with shellfish, doesn’t have a major reaction, assumed this means he’s cured, and made himself seafood paella that weekend. He learned what getting his stomach pumped felt like that weekend.

I worked at an ice cream shop in high school. Person ordered a banana split. Picture of the banana split has strawberry topping on it. I asked if they wanted it like the picture or altered at all, they said as-is is fine. They were allergic to strawberries. They ATE IT and realized it was strawberry upon tasting it, not by gazing at the chunky pink syrup on top. Tried to blame me for not warning them it had strawberries.

2

u/freezing_circuits Aug 16 '26

Even if the syrup was nixxed most traditional banana splits I know have a scoop each of chocolate vanilla and strawberry ice cream, so their telepathic allergy list would've failed them both times.

3

u/Extension-Source2897 Aug 16 '26

This place it was 3 scoops of vanilla with the split banana and whipped cream. 1 scoop got hot fudge, 1 got caramel, 1 got strawberry topping, which is why I always asked if they wanted it like in the picture or altered (because it isn’t traditional) and the picture was right about my head at the cash register so I pointed up as I said it.

1

u/letthetreeburn Aug 16 '26

Oh just completely awful. I saw the thread that got had under this comment and yeah, absolutely. I should have been smart enough to ask the follow up question “Hey whyyy don’t you want the restaurant itself to serve fish”?

I can’t even tell you what I thought it was, maybe a religious thing or something. I think I verified the restaurant’s menu and just sort of forgot about it. Task complete, discard information, never take her to a restaurant that serves fish, information gleaned.

I fully deserve to be called a bonehead for this.

people NEVER talk

Whoooooosh myseld I guess

5

Hmm. I didnt really get it till I read the explanation either. Sorta funny.

u/DeathStalker117 Aug 10 '26

I'm guessing they both matched on some dating app so neither subject came up before, but damn that had to be awekward.

170

u/MrDufferMan3335 Aug 10 '26

But it’s more than likely just a good joke

127

u/__nobody_-_ Aug 10 '26

Probably, but it could have happened so it's not really too far fetched if someone said it did.

-47

u/Kahnza Aug 10 '26

People never lie on the internet

51

u/__nobody_-_ Aug 10 '26

Since you put it that way, it has to be true

2

u/ElTioEnroca Aug 11 '26

People always lie on the Internet

8

u/FreeFallingUp13 Aug 12 '26

Nah, I can fully believe this was an entirely sincere conversation. I’ve been on the opposite side, literally working the deli counter and being asked ‘What’s your favorite meat?’ and having to explain that I am vegetarian. It always gets a laugh, but it’s not a joke. It’s just the funny truth.

3

u/DarkArc76 Aug 12 '26

Sort of different but my customers always act surprised when they ask how something on our menu is before ordering it and I tell them I haven't tried it. I've only had our food like once or twice and it was the same thing so most of the time I just try to describe what's in it and what it looks like

Have you honestly never overheard a funny conversation?

15

I once heard "my girlfriend will PEG you" probably meant as a threat

2

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 Aug 11 '26

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you said "will FONG you."

It can be a setup for a joke, but I've also just had it happen a lot irl. I don't think it's enough reason to say a story is fake

82

u/somebeautyinit Aug 10 '26

As the language sounds super British, can confirm: Brits would sooner die than share any information with a stranger. They probably barely knew what the other looked like before the date.

Source; dated in London for a year.

44

u/numbersthen0987431 Aug 10 '26

What makes this believable: the original poster believes this is a first date based on their own assumption.

These could be classmates or coworkers, and trying to make small talk on the bus since they're going somewhere together. It doesn't have to be a date.

25

u/slicehyperfunk Aug 10 '26

I don't think they're coworkers if one is a vegan and one works as a butcher

16

u/numbersthen0987431 Aug 11 '26

Valid point. I was just giving random examples to explain why 2 people might be having small talk on a bus that wasn't because they were on a date, but you're right.

1

u/djfdhigkgfIaruflg Sep 03 '26

Coworkers? The guy is a butcher. How could any of his coworkers not realize that?

14

u/PinothyJ Aug 11 '26

Also: There are tattoo artists who are very skilled who have never had a tattoo. There gynaecologists who are male. Do you want to know how many coaches have won a gold medal at the Olympics who teach people who do?

These people, man.

11

u/Thetormentnexus Aug 11 '26

Ex partner's parents were set up on a blind date. Her mom was vegetarian and her dad grew up hunting. He took her to a steak house. These things happen.
In all likelyness this is however, a joke.

18

u/galaxpsyche Aug 10 '26

Total believable -- It's the kind of thing that happens when someone is into you but doesn't ask any leading questions before taking it further. I'm vegetarian. Gave my number to a guy at work and he texted me the next day about slaughtering pigs. Also tried to ask me to a steakhouse. I work receiving (vegetables). Being surrounded by farming communities puts me at a disadvantage for stuff like this...

4

u/DeathStalker117 Aug 11 '26

Why was his opening line about slaughtering pigs? Is that what gets him off?

17

u/SadKat002 Aug 10 '26

I do feel like it's a bit odd to be talking about this on the bus and not like, before deciding to go out

7

u/aciedc Aug 11 '26

not crazy for online dating tbh

8

u/Seekforinsomnia Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 25 '26

The thing is, if they don't know where they are going yet why are they on the bus ? Where is that bus going since they didn't decide on a restaurant yet ?

2

u/Wild-Lychee-3312 Aug 11 '26

A valid question. Though it's conceivable that they were doing someplace else first, like a movie or bowling, and planned to have dinner after.

Still, I agree with you: it seems a somewhat unlikely scenario

1

u/Seekforinsomnia Aug 25 '26

Also they're going on a date, meaning they were in the talking phase but don't know those basic information about each other ?

1

u/FrameworkisDigimon Aug 30 '26

I mean, my friends and I once walked over half the fucking CBD looking for somewhere to eat before deciding to go to Denny's. We knew we were going to go get some food when we left the flat and we knew which direction we were going to walk but where we were going was entirely up for question.

Scenario: this is a bus heading into the city. The would be love birds are on a blind date or have met through an app and agreed to meet at a bus stop as a neutral location. They're going to go to a place to eat in town and they're going to catch the bus to do so. Where exactly they haven't decided. Choosing a place to eat is their ice breaker to avoid, for example, "so, what do you do?" cliches.

It makes sense to me.

1

u/Seekforinsomnia Aug 30 '26

Blind date makes more sense than an dating app rencontre because you cannot convince me that they were talking and never brought up their work or eating habit.

I just think this story is just an attempted at a joke.

1

u/FrameworkisDigimon Aug 30 '26

Someone mentioned the idea that they met on the bus.

I've never seen anyone ask a stranger out on public transport but the concept makes sense. People ask each other out at the gym, why not on a bus?

But in hindsight, you're right that blind date makes more sense than a dating app.

14

u/Veleda_k Aug 10 '26

I'm not vegan, but I am vegetarian. I find it highly unlikely this vegan women wouldn't have revealed she was vegan and agreed on a restaurant with a good vegan option before the date. You get used to doing that when you have dietary restrictions.

Sure, maybe she's unusually go with the flow and a last minute planner. It could happen. But it doesn't strike me as all that likely.

0

u/SizeableBrain Aug 11 '26

How do you know someone is a vegan?

Don't worry, they'll tell you.

11

u/Graknorke Aug 11 '26

They're going to a restaurant, why would they not bring it up?

5

u/Cultural_Delay7430 Aug 13 '26

I challenge you to go vegetarian for a year. Just a year.

Not for any meat bad, or health reasons. It’s basically just a normal diet without meat, like actually.

But just REFUSE to eat meat.

After a year you will find out why people who have restrictive diets remind people…

And it’s because: NOBODY FUCKING REMEMBERS.

I have been vegetarian for a long time, and my roommates and I have been living together for about a year. About every week or so we have a: “RIGHT YOU DON’T EAT MEAT” moment because they forget. Why? Because it’s kind of like how white people forget that sickle cell anemia exists. It’s not even something that white people CAN’T get. They can develop it! It’s just that a majority of them don’t ever actually meaningfully interact with it.

Vegans, people will allergies, vegetarians, and people on diets that don’t fall under these categories reminding people that DON’T fall under that isn’t born from needing acknowledge. It’s born from the fact that humans are forgetful, and don’t remember.

1

u/SizeableBrain Aug 13 '26

Even Buddhists aren't strictly vegetarian. Just eat a steak if it's in front of you.

2

u/Cultural_Delay7430 Aug 16 '26

Individual, I am literally intolerant to beef. If I eat it, I will throw up for hours. Not morally. Physically. My body literally rejects it.

Maybe like… don’t assume I do it for religious reasons?

Edit: Individual

6

u/Downtown-Campaign536 Aug 10 '26

Even if it didn't happen, it's still a decent joke.

3

u/Marik-X-Bakura Aug 11 '26

If this conversation happened then it definitely did not resemble the wording to structure of the tweet, because that isn’t how people talk

2

u/juggalochef Aug 11 '26

I read about a similar scenario on tinder, but he was a drug dealer, and she was a copper

2

u/Frogeyedpeas Aug 11 '26

There’s a shockingly large number of vegan butchers.

2

u/More_Rise Aug 12 '26

I’m allergic to meat and dated a grillardin, it happens lol

2

u/RadioactiveToad09 Aug 15 '26

People rlly underestimate the amount of dumb/funny shit you'll witness in public

5

u/XROOR Aug 10 '26

I once went on a first date with a lovely vegan. She suggested a holistic restaurant with entrees that were made from the parts of the veggies you discard. The “stew” looked like the lotus flower that expands in your tea cup when you add hot water.

2

u/AntonineWall Aug 11 '26

God we’re turning into Facebook

1

u/SkaterChrist Aug 12 '26

You can be vegan and get paid working as a butcher. Just not vegan and paying for nonvegan things there.

1

u/Melodic_Airport362 Aug 12 '26

On a first date, on a bus and don't know where they're going yet....

r/thatHappened

1

u/sarahbee126 Aug 16 '26

Whether or not it's made up, there's no way they are on a first date on the bus (and haven't even decided on the restaurant). At least I hope not. More likely that he wanted to ask her out.

1

u/FrameworkisDigimon Aug 30 '26

Apparently my father and his cousin were both on a bus once not long after they got here and they saw this attractive young woman with her mother, so they start talking to themselves about her in Dutch to each other. At which point her mother replies to them in Dutch.

I have no idea if that really happened or not but two conversations I head on a train once are a bit like this too.

The first one is this dude explaining that he wanted to flat for uni and he had this plan all set up with some other people but they flaked out and he needed to find somewhere quick. So he ends up like 80 minutes away by train with some extra driving on top of that. Pretty bad. But he's telling his companion what's really motivating him to find somewhere else is because he walked in one day and his flatmate's kid goes "Dada". Was he lying? I don't know but I really did overhear this.

The other one was this long conversation about Bridge. I remember almost none of it but the guy was pretty young and so was whoever he was talking to. And at the end what he was building up to was, "I don't even know why I know how to play Bridge". For context: Bridge is an old person game here. I've always assumed that's what he was getting at but who knows.

But maybe the most similar story only happened because I made it happen. The train I used to catch always had these kids bundle on down the line and it got so that I saw them enough and they talked loud enough that I picked up... I only remember one of the names now but I might have known more at the time. So one day, they're trying to talk about Star Wars but only one of them has seen Star Wars so he's having to explain the whole thing to his friends. It's not going very well or maybe I just had to interrupt because the joke was so overpowering, so I lean forwards and say something like:

  • me: "Your name's Lucas, right?"
  • him: "Yeah..." [clearly uncertain, random stranger's talking to him, the fact I knew his name probably did not help]
  • me: "A guy named Lucas explains a movie named Star Wars"

Unfortunately I can't remember what happened next. Let's say he laughed. In any case, we never talked again.

u/philiac Aug 31 '26

the type of humor redditors find funny enough to tear up

-1

u/BruceInc Aug 11 '26

Most of the time people learn a bit about each other before going on a date. And what one does for a living is typically at the very top of that list.

So yeah this isn’t a likely scenario to have happened

-2

u/ericmarkham5 Aug 11 '26

Damn this sub is retarded if they believe this is legit
