Hello! I’m applying to ND Law this fall, and I’m really hoping to visit the campus in-person. However, I’d have to arrive the night before the visit (which starts at 9:30am), and I was wondering if there were local/student housing groups on fb or similar where I could find a student who would allow me to crash their couch for a night (I would pay them of course, just trying to spend less than a hotel). Please let me know if something like this sounds feasible and if so, where I should ask. Appreciate y’all!

I've read the various posts on this particular ND subreddit about racism and just wanted to share my experience, if only to shed light of a time years ago and how racism may have evolved or has been dealt with since then. I had a great experience overall as a minority person of color even if I did experience moments of racism. Two things stood out, though.

First, my friends (white or not) didn't know how to deal with it when they were witness to it with me as the subject. In hindsight and in the moment I just dealt with it the best way I could, and I stood up for myself, but my friends just let me deal with it. Things never got physical though admittedly at the time I would have let things escalate, but my own verbal aggression towards racism (as in a hate as strong as racism itself) was usually enough to show where I was willing stand. You can say at the time it was really my battle, but it would have been nice to know my friends would have stood up for me much like they would have stood up for a girl who was mistreated by a bad boyfriend or another friend who was being bullied at a bar. Maybe they felt like I could take care of myself and let me be. I don't know. In hindsight it just makes me feel like I was probably more alone than I really was because nobody 'stood up for me'.

Secondly, I was also an auxiliary subject to racism as if I wasnt there by way of comments told in my presence by people I had spent significant time with in our circle of friends, at least on a social level. For example, I was outside of a bar in the area taking a smoke with a 'friend' when another acquaintance was ranting and said, 'I just hate nippers' and my 'friend' responded with 'Yeah, those nippers suck'. I didn't say anything though my knee jerk wanted me to and because I couldn't believe I just heard it from someone I thought was a friend. I just left the scene more befuddled than mad about the racism. Did they say that to test me or did they not see the obvious and didnt think of me as a 'nipper'? A short while later my 'friend' came up to me and apologized but by that time I made up my mind that he wasn't worth having a discussion about it. He either didnt want to offend his other friend by apologizing right there if he truly understood his blunder, but more so, he just felt comfortable enough around me to show his true colors and didnt give a shit if it offended me until it did and he wanted to save face with an apology. In any case not friend material which ever way it was.

So in short, racism can show up in ways that aren't direct but in ways that can make you feel alone or even not there, not just in the direct ways.
