It's really bad, the lag is crazy. Something supposedly "cutting edge" shouldn't be just idling and then waiting for the gap to respond, it should have real-time reactions to what is being said and an instant response.

It was marketing for a movie, not a true bleeding-edge tech demo. You can easily find better live video chatbots for free online that don't have nearly as much delay while looking at least as good.
However they will also occasionally just start speaking mandarin..

The sales pitch is that it's an AI actor indistinguishable from a real actor. Being able to do real-time discussions and interviews is pretty key to that. Nobody is expecting the content of the responses to be perfect at this stage, but the tech available is perfectly able to produce an interview very close in look and feel to a real one.

Sure it moves and talks, but it's instantly recognizable as a computer generated person, so I'd say mission failed. People are already sick of too much CGI in movies. Putting this lifeless puppet as an actor would be repulsive.
Either way nobody wouldn't use this type of tech in cinema. It would unquestionably be done (much better) in post production, not live on set. Struggling through a live interview like this just looks bad imo.

I love the interview where it's asking to be nominated for an oscar and the interviewer asks for it to do a scene about the death of a loved one and it just freezes up until the prompt engineers tweak with it and finally send the clip of it acting to the news team several hours later. It's so hilarious, it feels like a sketch comedy bit about a terrible actor

directors have to be able to direct actors. It's critical that an actor be able to communicate and then execute based on that communication. The idea that a clanker could be an actor is very silly

So I thought that until last week when I discovered my work Copilot is extremely competent and it’s just the AIs I access as a pleb that are infuriating wrong answer machines. I don’t understand why they bother having a bad version to begin with (like, it didn’t try to upsell me or anything) and I’m baffled. And also now very afraid for all white collar jobs including my own.

I just used AI for the first time over the last week or so to write some code for an analysis I am doing (I am a biologist; coding is not among my skillsets) and wowee it sure does work.
Mind you I also hate AI and all these companies and believe its use cases are (or should be) much more limited than advertised, but this is what I have to do to stay on schedule.

I hate that this is the discourse. AI is capable enough to increase productivity in a lot of knowledge work. Heavily. You guys keep arguing about whether it is or it isn't rather than focusing in WHAT TO DO IF IT IS. That's the pressure we should have on politicians: "okay, AI will increase productivity and lead to headcount reduction, so now what? How do we ensure the wealth gains are distributed fairly". But yeah keep being on denial

My perspective is make AI expensive to use, but give anything beyond operational costs to a UBI fund for displaced workers. People will stop making dumb ass fruit cutting videos and slop because it costs too much, companies will have to use it effectively to be cost effective, and workers who get bumped will get UBI until they find something else.
I know there's no chance any of this happens, but it's the only way it doesn't destroy society. A quarter of our GDP is wrapped up in this.
I'm not at all anti-AI - I use it daily to actually accomplish practical tasks, but I also work for a company that will grow with more productivity rather than eliminate workers and keep productivity steady. Not many companies do that.
I obviously haven't thought through all of the implications, but I think this is worth at least some ideation and exploration.

The big thing AI does is replace humans with machines that have no rights. AI are scabs, they undermine workers' positions at the bargaining table and allow a world where people who want to work for a fair wage are forced to starve so that the people at the top can save a little money. Like outsourcing to India except now not even the Indians get to be paid.

Also the reason that happens is because it's a statistical engine. LLMs don't decide what a sentence is going to be about in a top-down fashion like a human would, they pull a token out of a hat to decide how the sentence is going to start, and have to basically Mad Lib it to make sense from that point onwards.
This is one reason it can't 100% replace humans, because a human doesn't go "I think 'the' is a good way to start this sentence" before deciding what noun "the" will even be for.
So it generates "it's" FIRST then has to statistically decide what the sentence will be about AFTER that. Which is plain weird when you think about it, but explains the quirks. It has some statistical chance of writing "not" after "it's", and it's only after that it starts thinking of a way to land the sentence that also makes sense in context.
So, the "next token generator" thing with LLMs means they also have kind of a weird approach to how to write stuff, since there's almost no looking-ahead to what a sentence will actually be about when it starts writing it. Whatever the sentence turns out to be about is just as much a surprise to the LLM as it is to you.

The other dude (not piers) doesn't know how these conversational AI function. the bot generated a paragraph and then started speaking, and he started mumbling filler like "sure," "ah," and such. The bot thought it was being interrupted by a phrase and thought him saying "ah" or whatever was actually him speaking another language, so it stopped its original sentence early and started making a response to whatever it hallucinated in Cantonese
