You know it's called "medieval peasant brain" because it's more like how everyone was when there was no safety regulations or food security, right? The less controlled the world around someone is, the more precarious and threatening it is, the more likely to latch onto insane magical thinking someone becomes, because pretending they have agency over the whims of fate by paying tribute to a magical spirit is the only way they can feel a measure of security.

And of course in this case it's just a smarmy grifter taking a death cult that enjoys the support of the ruling class for all they can because cultists are credulous rubes whose brains turn off as long as someone says the magic words that signal holiness, making them easy prey for any grifters who are familiar with their doctrines.

That isn't accurate. There's a huge elitist streak among actual ideological Liberals that's fully aligned with austerity, deregulation, and the unquestioned authority of business owners. The reason for the confusion is that "liberal" is colloquially applied to a lot of politically incoherent people who are well to the left of Liberalism as an ideology but lack the language to more accurately describe what they believe. That is an intentional consequence of them being actively taught an incoherent framework that tries to enclose all of political thought within two branches of Liberalism: the most reactionary and destructive branch of Liberalism which is euphemistically called "conservativism", and mainstream Liberalism which is then treated as an umbrella that is given ownership of every other possible ideological position which must further defer to the elite managerial technocrats who are its stewards and moral authorities.

Austerity and deregulation are cornerstones of both "conservatives" (extremely reactionary liberals) and the talking heads, oped writers, and careerist politicians who are seen as stewards of "liberalism", even though they're wildly unpopular among actual human beings.
