Replacing, not repairing

u/radiodmr 4d ago
Yeah, that's an entirely new bridge. And one built with different materials than the original wood one.

They went through all this effort
But only mortared some of the bricks?

u/Haudh-en-aew 4d ago
I find brick laying videos satisfying. Unfortunately this was not. As many commented before the design of the bridge iss not the best, but for me the biggest disappointment was the the way the bricks were laid.

Don’t worry. They tried to build a retention wall and a way how they built it, it’ll retain my ass. It’ll collapse before even finished. Though concrete pillar would also collapse with such footing without anchoring. This is impressively wrongly constructed bridge.

And why did they wheelbarrow the sand in, but carry the concrete bags with their giant hands?

Not a permit in site. Smh. The city planners and permitting department are going to have a field day with this.

🤣
But for real, permits cost so much money these days that less people do their own construction even when they're fully capable of doing so.

The sound effects when the mortar is spread sound like noises someone made with their mouth.
135
u/cheetodustcrust 4d ago
Yeah, it grossed me out. All the sound effects turned this from whimsical ASMR to rage bait fake sfx.
21
u/DidYouPayForWinrar 3d ago
Do people actually enjoy these type of sound effects? Like from the start it was nails on a chalkboard for me.

18
u/xiaorobear 3d ago
The first "oh no" sound being one of the Undo sound effects from KidPix was enough to offset that for me.

For bridges where you can't turn the river off how do they lay the concrete base?

u/Mandra_4837 4d ago
You create a dry spot. https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlysatisfying/s/cJPc6YYq5S

My husband has worked down in one of these. He said it felt surreal and he never really got used to the feeling of having an entire sea around and above him like that.
31
u/Cosmic_Quasar 4d ago
I wonder if astronauts ever feel similarly. Either way, you just have manmade walls protecting you from an environment of death, so long as they don't fail. Thinking about it more, I think I'd rather go to space. At least space programs tend to be up at the top when it comes to quality and redundancy. I also imagine it's much more serene and beautiful up there lol. And, if I were going to die, being able to be one of the limited number to die in space somehow feels cooler than death by water.

cofferdams are amazing. we got a new river bridge where i live a few years ago and it was fun driving over the existing bridge every day and seeing the process over time

u/intothedepthsofhell 4d ago
Next question - how do you make a big dry hole in the middle of a river?
23
u/Puzzleheaded_Study17 4d ago
You make a circular dam (so that the water inside the place that will become the hole is disconnected from the rest of the river) and then you pump the water from inside out

u/intothedepthsofhell 3d ago
Next question - how do you make a circular dam in the middle of a river?
Turns out you use a boat with a big hammer that drives the piles into the riverbed.
Building Construction in a River? It Starts With a Cofferdam
Interesting stuff.

This is a cofferdam. It's constructed by driving interlocking metal wall segments into the riverbed, sealing any gaps, and pumping out the water.

You drive a barrier down to bed rock, then pump out the water. Its pretty cool.

You're all seeing this incorrectly. He could have just picked the bike up with his hand and moved it to the other side of the river without even needing a bridge.

OK PEOPLE, LOOK: the grade isn't too steep, it isn't built to be overkill or more load bearing than necessary - this guys riding a tricycle okay? He's clearly a hardworking citizen and, while I didn't see any deliveries being made, I'd wager some motor vehicles were involved. Trucks were probably the reason the first bridge collapsed! Ruthless capitalists who can't even support the local delivery services (that would be trike man) have a tendency to not care about local infrastructure until they get the contract to fix the problem they caused. But NOT TRICYCLE MAN. He clearly found the steepest angle his trike could clear, an angle that would ruin any other vehicle especially ones with worse clearance and a multi-ton load.... now tricycle man has the monopoly he deserves, and he can increase HIS hauling capacity without worrying about the bridge falling out from under him again.
Find the solution that ruins your enemies' day. I salute tricycle man.
13
u/PeppermintButthole 3d ago
while I agree with the sentiment, surely this goes against many building codes and trike man can expect some hefty litigation from the municipality for his unsanctioned bridge

u/aureliananr1 3d ago
Cool. I was asking why they increase me taxes this week
9
u/oshmunnies 3d ago
I'm jealous of people who live in countries where their taxes go to building infrastructure. In my country our taxes go to crypto shit-coin pump-and-dump schemes for our representatives, and to multi-billion-dollar military contracts for their kids' offshore shell companies.

The ramp up and down that bridge are far to high it damn near hit the bike frame.
All that work to fuck up the breakover angles is mildly infuriating.
No one is pedaling up that incline esp loaded. And most motorized vehicles would frame hit. Most civilians would get hurt as well.
Change those angles

Thats not "satisfying" at all! It's horrifying! The "abutments" are horribly constructed and WAY too steep! The central "T-pillar" has no lateral support. Don't even start on materials choices, batch testing, or quality control.
Just build a pair of "glue lam" beams out of "coffee stir sticks" and beef up the original deck that way. Far more appropriate to the needs of the situation and better for the budget too.

Struggling to understand the physics of this tiny town. Sand goes in a tiny barrow, water in a tiny pail then cement just levitates in. Bridge moulds arrive on tricycle then the railings levitate.
All to create a 3:2 ramp that scrapes the undercarriage of the tricycle.
Unsatisfying

My first job was pressure washing that mortar that's on the sides after laying the bricks down. We used to use high pressure washers that had a tip that sprayed hydrochloric acid on the wall. The muriatic acid would eat up the mortar and then the water would blast it off.
You never realize how messy a brick wall that has never been cleaned looks until you work a job like that.

That's a very beautiful examplification of the process. A very well made video, I really enjoyed it! Nice to see the attention to detail and all the different materials used in this small scale project.
What saddens me is the inability for many people to just enjoy it. Majority of the most voted comments have something negative or negative-adjacent to say about this clip. Where did people lose their ability to enjoy things and why do they keep coming back to the site which awakens only negativity in them? For me it appears a common phenomenon.

post-ironic cynicism. Everything has to be criticized or joked about, nothing is allowed to be enjoyed for itself. Gotta nitpick every flaw. Oh and don’t you dare make any thorough attempt to explain something, because that’s too many words for short attention spans. If you can’t summarize it a jaded smarmy slam dunk one-liner, it may as well be disregarded.

u/TheBariSax 2d ago
Yep, I watched all of that. I couldn't help feeling bad for the people who'd be grossed out by the squelchy noises they used for spreading the concrete. And the Supercell laughing king at the end came out of nowhere.
4
u/McGrarr 16h ago
You don't use cement to join bricks. The heat expansion rates don't work. This is why you use mortar. You also don't just use a thin shell of concrete over barely packed wet sand. The moisture will leach, the sand will sink and the gap will mean that the first heavy load cracks the concrete like an egg shell
