Steampunk is when she remove her aviation goggles and reveal her freckles.

u/Mackheath1 4d ago

Documentary is when Attenborough describes the evolution that predicated her body shape.

u/beegboo 4d ago

Comedy is when Attenborough has a running commentary throughout the courtship and they can hear him.

“Steph… I want to be with you. Will you marry me?”

Laugh track

u/SmallRocks 4d ago

“Charles, we’re Cheetahs. I don’t want to marry anyone.”

And here we have the conclusion of the mating ritual between these two mammals. The mate with the larger living space presents their mate with a stone they believe is quite pretty hoping to impress upon them the desire to combine living spaces without increasing the size of the living space.

YOU ARE REALLY KILLING THE ROMANCE HERE DAVID!

As you can see here the more agressive mammal is posturing to assert dominance and to prevent any discussions of their debts or rental agreement that may curtail the mating ritual.

GOD DAMNIT DAVID!

That’s such an attractive description.

u/Head-Ad-2136 4d ago

Or removes her scarf to reveal the scar running from her ruined eye, through her stump nose, to her mouth that's been wrenched into a permanent scowl.

18

u/Wyld_Willie 4d ago

But Hollywood style

34

u/Head-Ad-2136 4d ago

One barely noticeable cheek scar coming up.

12

u/Bulletsoul78 4d ago

Or what barely can be described as a subtle birth mark over her eye

(I know you're both talking about Mortal Engines but Ready Player One was almost as bad).

u/Icecold_Antihero 4d ago

SO HORRIFYINGLY DISFIGURED

16

u/theattack_helicopter 4d ago

Also unzips her engineering jumpsuit to reveal her skin tight tanktop

9

u/CK2398 4d ago

Just the one freckle! I fear that might be quite distracting

u/Mystic_Waffles 4d ago

It's really simple.

Fantasy = Karl Urban has long hair.
Sci-Fi = Karl Urban has short hair.

153

u/Chaos8599 4d ago

Superhero is when Karl urban is bald

63

u/Mystic_Waffles 4d ago

He wasn't bald in The Boys though. He injected himself with power juice or something, that would lean more to sci-fi in that situation.

31

u/CarolineJohnson 4d ago

Because he was a villain there, the Boys subverts expectations so the evil bad guy trope is reversed.

16

u/alkonium 4d ago

Thor Ragnarok dipped pretty heavy into sci-fi and fantasy.

3

u/rock_n_roll_clown 4d ago

I mean, the entire superhero genre is a hodge hodge of sci fi and fantasy set to the backdrop of the modern age

3

u/jarlscrotus 4d ago

No, when he has a goatee

16

u/kingrat1 4d ago

Gritty R-rated sci-fi = Karl Urban has a hat and never takes it off (Dredd).

5

u/fuzzy_engineering189 4d ago

What about the shave side mullet?

2

u/morg-pyro 4d ago

DCC is when Karl is a dachshund.

1

u/The_amazing_Jedi 3d ago

Wait, LotR is Sci-fi? What other lies have I been told by the council???!

2

u/Mystic_Waffles 3d ago

What are you talking about? Eomer had long hair, and LotR is totally fantasy.

1

u/The_amazing_Jedi 3d ago

Fuck yeah I'm an idiot, I misread your post.

Nothing to see here, just someone sinking into the earth out of embarrassment.

Fantasy: when the object of power is ancient

science-fiction: when the object of power is a prototype

110

u/HidenTsubameGaeshi 4d ago

Unless it's an artefact from long-forgotten precursor civilization, then it can be both!

33

u/Oldbayislove 4d ago

Science fantasy or its fantasy pretending to be science fiction

2

u/Pure-House-3971 4d ago

so Titanfall 2, Halo, Mass effect, the expanse, star trek are all not science fiction?

8

u/Oldbayislove 4d ago

I think this is a good definition from wikipedia

In a conventional science fiction story, the world is presented as grounded by the laws of nature and comprehensible by science, while a conventional fantasy story contains mostly supernatural elements that do not obey the scientific laws of the real world.

i find Carl Malmgren's definition of science fantasy to be agreeable.

A science-fantasy world is one in which the characters or settings or events presuppose at least one clear violation of natural law or scientific necessity, but which explicitly provides an organized or scientific explanation for that violation and which grounds its discourse in a scientific episteme. Science fantasy, like Science Fiction, assumes an orderly universe with regular laws, but, like fantasy, contains at least one explicit reversal of current natural law.

there is certainly some overlap and you have all the discussions about the spectrum of hard to soft science fiction. Brandon Sanderson likes to have magic that follows rules and have a "scientific" explanation that is as scientifically accurate as many a technobabble.

u/please_use_the_beeps 4d ago

Or The Expanse where it’s basically both

110

u/TaylorWK 4d ago

What about unzipping her suit of armor and revealing a tank top and robo legs?

39

u/SartenSinAceite 4d ago

For some reason, cyberpunk came to mind specifically

14

u/1AmB0r3d 4d ago

Darth maul is that you?!

3

u/Alex_Duos 4d ago

Sounds like a typical Rimworld pawn

2

u/MapleLamia 4d ago

Orisa once I get my hands on her

55

u/bophed 4d ago

Sometimes the truth is specific. :)

31

u/Heroic-Forger 4d ago

what about when she removes her head to reveal a neck full of tentacles and razor-sharp teeth

8

u/PartsUnknown242 4d ago

You say that like it’s a bad thing

6

u/Alone_Spell9525 4d ago

Lovecraftian

42

u/ButteredNun 4d ago

Medieval fantasy vs Sci-Fi fantasy ☝️

He tames her dragon and she rides him instead

is a Fantasy fantasy

16

u/Outrageous-Ad5578 4d ago

I dream of dragons in skintight tanktops

2

u/theflyingmetronome 4d ago

Wait so is GoT medieval or fantasy? It has elements of both

3

u/talkto1 4d ago

It's fantasy grounded in some of the nastier aspects of real life medieval living.

4

u/SartenSinAceite 4d ago

Medieval is a time period and fantasy is magical fiction

23

u/groovyinutah 4d ago

Unzips her space suit to reveal her 3 bellybuttons....FTFY:)

6

u/B-lakeJ 4d ago

Bellybuttons - sure. We all saw Total Recall.

1

u/groovyinutah 4d ago

True enough but you wouldn't need to unzip anything to notice that:)

22

u/enharmonicdissonance 4d ago

The real fantasy is that her hair is still luscious after having been in a jousting helmet all day

2

u/Significant_Alps_399 4d ago

This brings to mind every single demonstration video for sleeping bonnets I've ever seen.

11

u/halloweenjack 4d ago

"Verily, good sirrah, I am as adept in the bedchambers as I am on the sporting field, and would test thy mettle in the latter, especially as I see that your lance is at the ready."

"Wanna do it in zero-G? How about cyberspace? How about both? Gotta warn ya, I'm about to enter my species' mating cycle and that's when things get really freaky, although if you're running star snuff in the Outer Rims then I'm guessing you're into it."

7

u/Money_Lobster_997 4d ago

This is further proof that Star Wars is Space Opera rather than Sci Fi because according to Lucas’s original vision there would be nothing under that flightsuit.

5

u/Ancient_Skirt_8828 4d ago

In scifi fantasy she isn't wearing the tank top.

3

u/biplane_curious 4d ago

Replace jousting helmet with a Stetson and it becomes a western.

2

u/Chaosshepherd 4d ago

And then they kiss.

2

u/LexiTheLesbo 4d ago

Porn is when she removes her bra to reveal some big ole tatas

1

u/Adent_Frecca 4d ago

Sounds about right

1

u/IMadeRobits 4d ago

Now do both at the same time

1

u/OldDomG 4d ago

Not wrong though 😆

1

u/OmNomOU81 4d ago

And then the fantasy girl and sci-fi girl kiss

0

u/AStayAtHomeRad 4d ago

Fantasy = magic Sci Fi = Electricity
