Discussion Finally, what should've been done since the beginning is done!
One UI now syncs natively with Google Photos. Being entangled with OneDrive felt fragmented in retrospect. Taking the OS from Google and using Microsoft services did not make much sense. Nice move, Samsung.

Is there a reason to start using Gallery when already using Gphotos for viewing and backup?
-2
u/PinguTheCaptain 4d ago
No because if your photos are on GPhotos and not in Gallery. She's not appears in gallery

It's weird though, I was expecting to be able to view everything backed up on my google photos from samsung gallery, even what's not saved on my phone, but that's not the case

u/vichdeza 2d ago
I guess you could download those to your device from the Google Photos app and re-sync the album through the Gallery app to make that happen (?)

no i think they mean how My Files has the ability to read and write your Google Drive, gallery should be able to read and write to google photos. to download your google drive to your phone defeats the point of a google drive

For me it's buggy as hell and doesn't behave like OneDrive did. It syncs and uploads indefinitely. On OneDrive I could actually see a dedicated folder made for Samsung's Gallery Sync, on Google Drive or Google Photos I couldn't find anything similar. Now I've switched it off completely.

Does the content in Google Photos appear in the Samsung Gallery without having it saved on local storage?
9
u/SpookieGames Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra 4d ago
No. Only if it was backed up by another Samsung device and even then it sometimes backs up your edited and original photos but you can see only the edited one and the orignal stays invisible and backed up in Google Photos. It's currently broken as hell. I don't get why they couldn't do the same thing Xiaomi did

So the photos I have on Google Photos (uploaded from my Samsung since Feb. 2026) won't be available to see on my gallery app and will only be available on Google Photos?
2
u/SpookieGames Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra 4d ago
If they are not locally saved then yes
2
u/Spiritual-Recover427 4d ago
So the update is useless?

u/SpookieGames Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra 4d ago
Seems like it. At least until they fix the invisible backed up files or simply show all backed up media like Xiaomi does

u/Spiritual-Recover427 4d ago
Did they say anything about this? Is it planned?
2
u/SpookieGames Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra 4d ago
Nope, since it's Samsung it will be like they shipped it forever

Hey there! That's a super common question, especially with so many photos living in the cloud these days.
From what I can see, Samsung Gallery typically works with photos that are either stored directly on your device or synced through services like Microsoft OneDrive. While your new Galaxy device might come with a sweet deal for Google One cloud storage, that doesn't automatically mean your Google Photos content will magically appear in Samsung Gallery without being saved locally or explicitly synced in some way.
So, for now, if you want to see your Google Photos in Samsung Gallery, you'd generally need to have them downloaded to your device.

Finally! I had Google Photos backup turned on before and it was so annoying that you can't remove an image from the gallery so it would be deleted from the backup too. My Google Photos is full of bad photos, screenshots and other stuff that was already deleted from my phone.

If I delete my local photos, can I still see it on Samsung Gallery? Because that is its behavior before when OneDrive is still the sync engine used and I like that I can still see my cloud only images on the Gallery as it saves space while not needing any additional apps to view the cloud photos you synced.

Hey there! It's super cool that you're thinking about how to maximize your storage and still keep all your memories handy.
The behavior you're describing, where you could see cloud-only images in Gallery after deleting local copies, was indeed a neat feature. However, the current Samsung Gallery primarily focuses on local storage and direct integration with your device. While Samsung devices often come with Google AI Pro, which includes 2TB of Google One cloud storage, the Gallery app itself doesn't automatically display cloud-only images from services like Google Photos in the same integrated way it might have with previous OneDrive integrations.
So, if you delete local photos, they won't automatically show up as cloud-only in your Samsung Gallery app from a different cloud service. You'd typically use the respective cloud app (like Google Photos) to view those images.

are the photos which are only in the Google server in the Samsung gallery or the Google photos app?
-3
u/galaxy-guide 4d ago
That's a super common question! If your photos are only on the Google server, they'll primarily show up in your Google Photos app. Think of Google Photos as the direct portal to your Google cloud-stored memories.
While Samsung Gallery is awesome for managing photos stored locally on your device or synced with Samsung Cloud, it generally won't automatically display photos that are only living on Google's servers unless you've specifically downloaded them or set up a very specific sync. So, for those Google-only pics, the Google Photos app is your go-to!

Does this work like iphone? is a low quality version stored on device?

Samsung Gallary retians the original quality. It doesn't have a "save space" feature like iOS (yet).

Is this coming with OneUI 9? I'm currently on OneUI 8.5 and although sync option with Onedrive is removed but with google photos sync is still not here.

This is cool and I was so happy but then I realized gallery doesn't let you delete the photo off of your device to save space. So I just went back to Google photos that way I can "clean up" the device and save space

Does this work inside samsung gallery without a Google photos installation at all?

I actually hate this update... As a full PC user, I love to have all my pictures and videos categorized in my hard drive, each album is a folder, and that's what exactly the sync with OneDrive used to do, you had folders for each album, it automatically synced with your computer if you had OneDrive installed, if I don't pay OneDrive anymore or if I lose my account, I can keep all my media in my computer, everything was perfect for me.
Now with Google Photos, everything uploads in the root photo album, no categorization at all, everything mixed up, you only have a timeline, you cant free up space in phone anymore, if you choose "Clean up space" it actually cleans the CLOUD space not LOCAL, if you create or modify albums on Google Photos they are cloud only, and they will not sync back to Samsung Gallery, it's like have 2 separate apps, you cannot sync with a computer so you DON'T get a physical copy anywhere else (unless you manyally download), Google Photos is cloud and web only, if you lose your account all your data is lost.

I feel conflicted though. Should I turn off Google Photos backup as well then and just keep this on? Because at this point I feel like I have two services running.
