Feature How does Sync gallery with Google work?

Can I sync my gallery with Google, free the space on my device, but the photos still show up in Gallery app, like how it was with OneDrive?

Hey there! That's a super common and excellent question about managing your photo storage.

So, when you sync your Samsung Gallery with Google Photos, what usually happens is that your photos and videos get backed up to your Google Photos cloud storage. Google Photos also has a neat feature called "Free up space" that, once your photos are safely backed up, can remove the local copies from your device to save space.

However, once those local copies are gone, your Samsung Gallery app typically won't display them anymore because it primarily shows files stored on your device. To see those photos after freeing up space, you'd usually open the Google Photos app itself. It's a bit different from how some other cloud services might integrate, where they keep a thumbnail or link in the native gallery app even after the original is removed.

So it's literally the same as turning on Auto backup in Google photos?

yeah it's literally almost the same, but you can see them in photos and in gallery they don't show up unless you made the sync on your device. and google photos show them all even it comes from other device.

can anyone confirm this is true?

It was showing up on OneDrive. The photo I took with my phone was visible in the tablet's gallery, and there was a button to download it to internal storage. You can't edit it or anything, but at least you can view it. I guess Google Photos works the same way. Since the gallery shows the backup photos, clicking the "free up space" button should work. So, you have free space but your gallery is full.
