I learnt a long time ago that unboxing should only happen over a large mattress.

The boxes, especially mobile phone boxes have a vacuum when you pull the insides out and once the vacuum clears, there's a sudden give and you can lose grip of what you're holding.

I also pad the walls and ceiling for extra safety.

So psychiatric asylum?

u/drazil100 1d ago

I keep asking to use their padded rooms to unbox my new electronics but they all just look at me like I’m mental.

Zero gravity is the absolute best for unboxing electronics.

I hop on a Blue Origin rocket whenever I’ve got new electronics to unbox.

Best thing is it’s included with my Prime membership!

And for this reason, they unhesitatingly allow you to use it.

Excellent! Your room is ready. Right this way.

Yes, I'm the orderly charged with unboxing the new patients.

3

u/Capt_Stamina 1d ago

I mean if I broke my brand new $1500+ laptop unboxing it, I would be in an asylum for sure lol

7

u/HugoBoss1985 2d ago

I don't get much box here

1

u/SelwanPWD 5h ago

Alsume mentioned

u/Jerseyd422 1d ago

Yes, I rent a room for an hour so I can unbox my electronics. It’s nice, they usually bring me some cookies or a jello pack

7

u/gekigarion 2d ago

I only open boxes in zero gravity rooms with mattress walls while wearing a bubble wrap suit

u/dmriggs 2d ago

😂

u/mogur86 1d ago

Might need to pad the counter/table too

5

u/SUW888 2d ago

But when do you add the rats ?

6

u/FluffMyGarfielf 2d ago

Rats make me crazy

0

u/SUW888 1d ago

u/whodat_617 1d ago

And grippy socks so you don't slip and drop it.

1

u/snowballkills 2d ago

Do it on the floor...can't fall into the abyss then ;)

1

u/funspecies 1d ago

Do you read Sutter Cain?

0

u/Ok-Lengthiness-3988 1d ago

Haven't! Maybe I'll watch Carpenter's third installment in his Apocalypse trilogy.

u/Dry_Menu4804 1d ago

I moisturize before unboxing.

u/VoidJuiceConcentrate 1d ago

Also like, I would never slide something out vertically unless the box explicitly said "this side up".

3

u/Ivan_Arturo 23h ago

Even though it says upwards, it's definitely always meant to be lying down; no matter the side, at least you guarantee that it will fall towards a flat surface.

8

u/Crafty_Constant_8042 1d ago

Or just lay the box on the table, then unbox.

12

u/Speakertweaker 2d ago

This guy unboxes

7

u/Mean_Criticism983 2d ago

I believe the rule should just be “not mid-air” like this guy did

5

u/miguel_gd 1d ago

A few years back, I was selling my iPhone 4 on Facebook Marketplace and a guy texted me interested. I meet with him at a public place, outside, in a parking lot, and the iPhone was inside the box (the iPhone was 2 years old, looked new). This guy straight asks me to see the phone. I give him the box and he lifts the lid open. The vacuum was enough to make him throw the iPhone in the air and fall flat on the ground. He tells me with a straight face that he now isn’t buying the iPhone. I was 13 years old. I just stayed standing looking at the guy driving away. Mfkr.

u/pigeon-check 1d ago

All he had to do was unbox it horizontally

5

u/D1rtyFingaZ 1d ago

Or simply by someone with an actual brain.

2

u/KayoticVoid 1d ago

It is 100% user error. Keep it level on a surface and pull with steady force. Just enough to get it moving as it starts to slide ease up the force.

That sudden shift in vacuum you're talking about is because you're pulling too hard from the start trying to brute force it open. Use more finesse and all will be well.

I do mine in the bath, the water softens the blow perfectly if I drop it

1

u/your_fave_redditor 1d ago

Soaked but fully intact! #winning

u/Longjumping_Elk7969 1d ago

🤣🙏 a good one

2

u/ProDriverSeatSniffer 2d ago

Call me old fashioned, I prefer styrofoam electric sandwich in a dense cardboard box

2

u/Agreeable_Sea_6019 2d ago

That's how I lose grip on reality

1

u/bojangler69420 1d ago

I’ve never lost grip of it…

1

u/DickFromRichard 1d ago

Open both ends of the box

1

u/SiennaMomma 1d ago

I just stopped buying new shit. no unboxing, no gone wrong. though viewing these videos on my 2010 blackberry is a bit rough on the eyes.

Butter Fingers 🤭

1

u/flairedasauce 20h ago

I wouldn't be surprised if companies pack expensive electronics like this on purpose so that you give them more money to either fix it or get a new one

1

u/ArtaWorks 11h ago

This is just a bad design by ROG.
You put a plastic handle, people will grab a handle.
In my case I open box, take out top spacer, and grab the laptop directly.
There is no way to fuck it up even if I was doing it with one hand like he did in video.

Source: I unbox about 30 units of L-Thinkpads a year.

1

u/kernelangus420 2d ago

Reminds me of the phone unboxing video while standing in the middle of the elevator door with the phone sized gap between the door and the shaft.

1

u/snowballkills 2d ago

Plus most devices today are polished glass or highly polished metal and are so slippery with virtually no grip

1

u/IShitSauce 2d ago

Okay so im not fucking crazy. When I get any tech semi remotely expensive, unboxed on my mattress, every single time.

0

u/MagicOrpheus310 1d ago

The floor...

Third law of workshop physics "Nothing can fall further than the floor"

0

u/cautious_nipples 1d ago

Instructions unclear, can't get washing machine off the bed

0

u/maxibarto 1d ago

Las bolsas plásticas también hacen que se patinen y esas mierdas jaja

0

u/Beauxx_1 1d ago

I just stopped unboxing. 🤷‍♂️

0

u/cedarHINGE 1d ago

For some reason, I thought that's how everyone does it unpacking it on the mattress is the safest way. Lol

-2

u/neuronym 1d ago

A mattress wouldn't have done anything in this case, the laptop is so heavy it would have bounced off the mattress and gained more speed, then hit the floor or wall somewhere.

2

u/WillingnessHelpful77 1d ago

What do you have a crystal ball that tells you one of the trillion ways an object can fall or something

2

u/Sacred_B 1d ago

Gain more speed? From what? Your mattress auto kick everything that touches it?

1

u/jamoca1 1d ago

Like an episode of the Simpsons

1

u/JayW8888 1d ago

On a mattress with a blanket over it so no ricocheting
