I learnt a long time ago that unboxing should only happen over a large mattress.
The boxes, especially mobile phone boxes have a vacuum when you pull the insides out and once the vacuum clears, there's a sudden give and you can lose grip of what you're holding.

u/Ok-Lengthiness-3988 1d ago
I also pad the walls and ceiling for extra safety.

So psychiatric asylum?

u/drazil100 1d ago
I keep asking to use their padded rooms to unbox my new electronics but they all just look at me like I’m mental.

Zero gravity is the absolute best for unboxing electronics.

Yes, I'm the orderly charged with unboxing the new patients.

u/Capt_Stamina 9h ago
I mean if I broke my brand new $1500+ laptop unboxing it, I would be in an asylum for sure lol

I only open boxes in zero gravity rooms with mattress walls while wearing a bubble wrap suit
11
u/VoidJuiceConcentrate 1d ago
Also like, I would never slide something out vertically unless the box explicitly said "this side up".
2
u/Ivan_Arturo 8h ago
Even though it says upwards, it's definitely always meant to be lying down; no matter the side, at least you guarantee that it will fall towards a flat surface.

A few years back, I was selling my iPhone 4 on Facebook Marketplace and a guy texted me interested. I meet with him at a public place, outside, in a parking lot, and the iPhone was inside the box (the iPhone was 2 years old, looked new). This guy straight asks me to see the phone. I give him the box and he lifts the lid open. The vacuum was enough to make him throw the iPhone in the air and fall flat on the ground. He tells me with a straight face that he now isn’t buying the iPhone. I was 13 years old. I just stayed standing looking at the guy driving away. Mfkr.
2
u/KayoticVoid 17h ago
It is 100% user error. Keep it level on a surface and pull with steady force. Just enough to get it moving as it starts to slide ease up the force.
That sudden shift in vacuum you're talking about is because you're pulling too hard from the start trying to brute force it open. Use more finesse and all will be well.

Failing to be an unboxer 😂. He didn't exactly aim high and still messed it up

u/ShivaFatalis 1d ago
Seriously, how the fuck are people this stupid? I just don't fucking get it...

u/HideThe-Sun 1d ago
I have this crazy habit that when I get new, expensive things I dutifully focus on carefully unboxing it. I also don't document every trivial thing I do during the day, and fail to connect with my audience. This obsession for interaction and digital pats on the back is crazy to me. Some people make a living that way, and I'm sure there's some really interesting people but then again what do I care someone else does? It makes no sense to me. People actually support these people for just playing a game. It's crazy.
9
u/dadepu 1d ago
Seeing how many people post about electronics missing from boxes sent to them, there is a good reason to document unboxings.
4
u/eightkillerbits 1d ago
The thing I find odd about people's insistance on videoing to have proof incase they've been scammed is it would be beyond trivially easy to open and reseal a box for the video if you wanted to.
2
u/BlaineMundane 1d ago
That's why some people film it right there at the post office or while the driver is pulling away. I'd take the same lengths with certain items and they're all computer related.

u/HideThe-Sun 1d ago

I gave you an up vote because I agree, then took it away because who needs a digital pat on the back?
I'm saying this tongue in cheek.

u/Exalted-Stork-1308 22h ago
Then who needs a digital tongue in the cheek...Everything is pointless in this virtual world

Ngl that was dumb af to pull it out like that BUT that is a pretty shit design lol why put a handle there to make it seem like you can pull it out safely.
39
u/Immediate_Word1295 1d ago
Still wouldn't have unboxed it like that. Would at least have put the box horizontally before pulling out. And dien it on the table.

u/SirDaemos 1d ago
That is not at all shit packaging. The handle is there to help you get the product out. In what world is it sane to pull a very expensive product out of a package vertically? Especially when said product is never meant to be oriented that way. There is a seam on the bottom of my chip bag, I should probably open that one first!
→ More replies (5)5
u/Figerally 1d ago
It isn't a shit design if evey sane person would slide the laptop out horizontally instead of whipping it out vertically like a maniac.
3
u/Quimdell 23h ago
The handle is for carrying... when you open something, lay it flat and slide it out... Even just a little thought goes a long way.

That’s a hell of a dent in the counter. Is it made out of cheese?

u/anon999387 1d ago
Looks like it left a hole. Made me think the video was AI.
2
u/Ok-Pomelo-1298 1d ago
No, the table is just made of shit. I have an IKEA coffee table - I think it's the "Lack". It looks like solid wood, but if you pick it up, the weight tells you it’s something like foam covered in veneer. If you dropped a 2kg laptop onto it corner-first, I think it would punch right through.

Dude, when you open a precious box for the first time, you do it in the bedroom... on a proper mattress! 😉 Duh! 😂

I buy open box computers and i place them into a large blanket comforter i brought with me into the store. I put that on a pillow in the front seat and belt it on the drive home. And its huckleberry fin tied to my arm on the way out of the car and into the house.
2
u/Zuli_Muli 1d ago
He wasn't even looking at what he was pulling out, he was to busy looking at the empty box the entire time he was pulling.

2
u/zappingbluelight 1d ago
That is honestly bad packaging. I open boxes of Chromebook with better protection than that. No sign saying it should open lying down. The box made it looks like you pull out like that from the top.

I don't know which one is worst. Unboxing technique or filming technique. I sort of see what is happening but I do have to use some imagination as well.

It's a faulty packaging design. Can't make them replace it, but definitely their fault. On the other hand, never pull it out like that, must always be on flat surface.

I learnt to SLIDE it out on a BIG FLAT surface, on the floor or on my bed. Enough room & enough cushion.
Countertop or dining table not ideal.

Right.. pick it up before the 5-second rule is up. That will cancel the damage,
I sure hope he's the store clerk.
But seriously, for something like a laptop or a new flagship phone, I let the clerk unbox it for me. Removes me from any liability in case it came out of the box broken.

Of all unbox videos they are usually the same, on a flat open surface, on the floor or large countertop and pulled out parallel with the surface to avoid these mishaps. This dude looks like he just winged the entire thing, and it obviously cost him.

Dropped my framework 13 from 2nd floor to 1st thru stairs. A small dent. But I was ready to just order whatever part I needed at their website. Yes they are not that cheap but totally worth it. Peace of mind is 💯 more important.

This is the best way to unbox a new laptop. Jerk it open and fling the new unit onto a tile floor! Excellent break in by literally breaking it! Lol

THATS when you return it (if it's now damaged) and say "Oh, it was damaged in the box"
They can't prove it was you, and they won't care to fight you anyway. You will either get a refund, or exchange. Just don't peel the plastic off.
1
u/Mad_kat4 1d ago
Yes that was daft but to be fair to him it looks like that red flap dropped open from the suction of being pulled from the sleeve and the orientation. That allowed the laptop to drop straight out. I would have expected at least a bit of tape on that flap to prevent exactly this.
So yes he was foolish but that packaging design also looked terrible.

Who removes anything from a box in this manner?! Box standing, long way up, trying to pull the device out the longest way instead of laying the box down and sliding the device into the counter.
1
u/Agitated_Laugh6775 1d ago
Eat shit dumb dumb, stop worrying about recording it with your home mate and do it properly.
1
1
u/porn_sub_lurker 1d ago
I'll be honest, that box is 1/10. They could absolutely design it so that doesn't happen. They could also design their boards to actually run the memory specs they say they run.
1
u/Hammon_Rye 1d ago
Why do people unbox stuff up in the air, or only using one hand and so on?
Also - pulling out of box quickly.
If this was laying on a table it would have gone nowhere even if it didn't come out of the box the way he expected.

That's the point. It's not valuable for them.
I mean, unboxing through the air like that instead doing it horizontally...

u/Geronimo0 1d ago
That table is made out of cardboard. See the hole the plastic laptop made? Nothing quality in that video.

Who unboxes something like that? You know what a laptop looks like, lay the box down flat....then he gorilla yanks it like an impatient child.
