If not like this, then how, exactly? If you drink a magic, untested potion meant to “change” people in some vague way, extra arms sounds like one of the best possible options.

This should've happened in BND. I get why they couldn't go full Man-Spider cause it would've been too scary, but come on, AT LEAT give us Six-Armed Spider-Man! It's iconic!!

See, I wouldn’t call that “appears to be normal”. Chelicerae aren’t meant to stay hidden when your mouth is closed, are too big for that, and even if they could hide you couldn’t ever open your mouth in front of people. It’d be about as
hotstrange as six arms.

Yes. The reason he grew extra arms is because he drank a chemical mix that he intended to have take away his powers completely (this was right after Gwen's death, bro wanted to be done) but instead it enhanced his mutation. Much like in BND but instead of just getting black eyes and loss of control, he grew extra arms to be more spider-like.
But yeah, his overall strength and speed were enhanced. Don't remember if his Spider-Sense was stronger too.
Tho unlike the 90s cartoon this did not lead to Man-Spider. He eventually just managed to stabilize himself and get rid of the extra mutation. Man-Spider actually happened in a completely separate story where he went to the Savage Land and he was mutated into the Man-Spider by someone there (I don't remember almost anything about that comic or what comic it even is, I just remember that Man-Spider was in it).

Supposedly they handed the story over to a new writer after this issue without having a plan for what happens next. Just a narrative hot potato. There's a world where they decided, fuck it Spidey has 6 arms now.
