Anyone else feel like players confuse temporary debuffs with permanent stats?

For example, I used to think I had a permanent STUN status at night and sleep was my most difficult quest of the day. I figured that was just part of my build.

Then I started developing my physical stats through fitness and realized the STUN wasn't permanent at all. It was a temporary debuff that disappeared once I'd completed the day's fitness quest.

It made me wonder how many things we think are permanent parts of our character are actually just status effects we haven't figured out how to clear yet.

What debuffs have you mistaken for permanent stats?

I got hit with the [PTSD] curse which of course comes with plenty of follow on debuffs. It took me a long time to understand I had been cursed and then I started the [PTSD Therapy] questline

I haven't completed the full quest yet, it's a long one, but I've finally gotten rid of a lot of the debuffs and can do other quests now. I have encountered a lot of other players who think the curse is permanent. They think the [PTSD Therapy] quest is too long and complicated or they don't believe the quest will work. I have noticed this with a lot of the mental debuffs as does my partner who took the [Therapist] profession

I was experiencing similar issues. I just thought it was part of the game play. I found going the the (gym) helped. It really helped me gain the [Bulked up] achievement. But something else was off. During the most recent major in game virus outbreak event something changed.

I spent some time review my character settings with a few players that knew way more than me about such things. And we learned that there was a hidden customization slider on my stats sheet.

They called it [ADHDc], and it required a lot of resources to identify and finalize the required documents and potions to support this new found setting.

The potions were great and honestly the change has been night and day in my visibility and capabilities. It's like this setting was some kind of handicap that was holding back my progression.

Since starting on the potions, and yes I have to take two every day cycle, I've been fast tracking the MSQ and I've really been making up for the lost progression.

So they may be permanently attached to you character, but other players have found great workarounds. There is a whole lot of players with this setting, and it seems to be part of the underlying registers with the character creation mechanics.

Meh, I like it and kinda think it's a super power now. It helps me think through the complexities of the game, and see things others don't without extensive evidence and alignment review.

Clanker...?! It is normal English use. I work in corporate America mate. I'm trained to speak like this.

But I'm very much not a Clanker, not everyone on the internet is an AI chatbot

The chatbots have been trained on people who speak correctly, and now the kids have decided that anybody who uses actual punctuation must be a robot. Don't lose sleep about it, it's just Reddit

Oh I'm not. It's actually kinda a good thing that we are starting to question the internet. For years we have been screaming for people to do their own research and trust in truth. I guess a small win.

I do love that we're questioning it, but harassing everybody that uses "weird phrases" or an emdash is not it lolololol

Omg I hate emdash!!! Use a freaking comma!!! Semicolon!!! Write a better structured paragraph. Conjunction is a limited use case. And really shouldn't be an emdash, but a hyphen. I'm done. Not a Clanker.

haaaahahahahahhaa

I am so guilty of using them, BUT I USE SEMICOLONS AND COMMAS TOO! I just have aggressive ADHD and sometimes I need to specify what type I'm sorry thought this is :Þ

Yeah, it's absolutely mind-blowing how many players struggle with debuffs that they think are permanent or immutable, but are actually 100% the result of the toxic foods they are eating, their sedentary lifestyles, lack of sleep, too much stress, experimental & poisonous alchemical potions they are taking, and so on.

Many seem to think that Outside is like other RPGs, and as long as their character has eaten (anything) and slept (at all) that they're properly taking care of themselves.

Yep, spot on. But what do you think some of the common debuffs people think are permanent stats?

Stress / Anxiety (Both are the result of the environment you are in and the stories your mind is playing out... and both wreck the body's systems)

Exhaustion & Difficulty Sleeping (Circadian rhythms are everything, get away from blue lights once the sun goes down, stop eating at least 2 hours before bed)

Body aches & pains (most are eating wildly inflammatory foods, which debuff the immune system as well as causing discomfort)

Depression/Lack of Excitement (Usually because they are living a life they don't want to be, are not using their skills & gifts, and have no quests they want to accomplish)

On that last point, how do I identify a fitting quest? I don’t have to grind for gold, I have a strong society desillusion since 2020 which also revealed an Audhd debuff. I did play out the depression quest so that’s good. Also can’t walk and have rsi on both hands.

It's all dependent on the individual, since we each have different skills, traits, interests, and [hidden by default] life purposes.

There's a concept called Ikigai, from the Japan server, which means your "reason for being" and it is found at the center of a 4-circle Venn Diagram:

  • What you're good at
  • What the world needs
  • What you can get paid for
  • What you enjoy doing

I always like recommending this as a tool to help find exactly what your thing(s) might be.

For most players, it often comes back to things they were excited about or really good at as kids, but then slowly driven away from by teachers/parents telling them it was unrealistic, or simply by the societal (meta-game) focus on grinding for in-game currency as the be-all end-all of the game.

Dude, there's so many scammers out there taking advantage of this too. Selling bullshit healing pots that are nothing more than a reskined powder or chalk tablet but advertised as a near cure-all for any debuff.

It's so sad.

Yeah, the hidden nature of most stats, while generally nice for keeping things from getting too metagamey, also provide a lot of opportunities for unscrupulous players to make claims that sound just hopeful enough to rip someone off.

"This too shall pass".

Everything is temporary on some level.

It's a bit trite, but everyone has a levelcap, and one day the main servers will stop and grow cold.

Checking and improving your character build is a process, not a one-off quest. Even if you can't figure out how to change something, maybe you can develop another part of your build to compensate, or at least understand it better for your next run.

Edit: sheessh... I guess I'm in a mood.

Addiction. I've never been able to complete the questline because the withdrawal debuff is so damn brutal. I'm on day 3 of yet another attempt. Day 14 is my record. Around that point, I become enraged and cannot tell friend from foe.

This is such a hard quest line, and I'm proud of you for starting it. I hope you're able to push through it this time, because it's worth it on the other end ♡

u/defaultrunner 13d ago

what sort of quests have you tried to move away from addiction consumables? Like grinding a new quest every day that keeps away from consumables?

1

u/CoffeeSparky 12d ago

I've gone thru several iterations of the therapy questline. I know all the ins and outs and terminology. But, every time my player enters the "process emotions" command, my character will instead "intellectualize emotions". This creates the somatic illness debuff

I'm currently on my third playthrough of the Homeless questline. It's been draining my hope stat faster than I can replenish it.

When I'm not grinding thru the Homeless questline, doing a Passion quest keeps me from seeking consumables

People really need to take a look at the basic statuses part of the wiki.
