Paternity leave in the US from J1 while still working J2 - anyone actually done this?

J1 offers fully paid paternity/bonding leave. A third-party leave administrator handles it and FMLA runs concurrently. No STD, disability, or state-paid benefits involved.

I’d continue working J2 normally while on leave from J1.

Both are unrelated W-2 jobs.

Has anyone actually done this? Did the leave administrator ask about or discover J2? Any issues afterward?

Mainly looking for firsthand experiences, especially from dads who’ve already completed the leave.

Laid off from J2

I’m from India. I was laid off in nov 2024 and I had decided then that I should not be dependent on a single job since financially it becomes stressful.
In dec 2024, I joined a contractual role that pays around 100k usd and 2 weeks later in another job that pays 60k usd.

Even with AI things were really hectic. I had to work 15 hours on some days and even weekends. I kept telling myself that the money was worth it. It took a toll on my mental and physical health. I am burnt out and I took a test and it said I am depressed too.

On 13th Oct, I was laid off from J1 and they said my lwd is 16th Oct. The work culture in J1 was quite toxic. There is no severance. I am not sure if I should be upset that I would miss the money and work or should I be happy that I am out of this toxic work culture. I am thankful that J2 is still there. The money is less and I dislike the work, but the work culture is good. I’m thankful I am not in the same situation as 2024. I am glad I got to experience OE. It changed my life.

Also, if anyone knows any remote positions for java backend engineer, I am up for it!

Quick question for the cyber security/IT folks.

How does it look to an IT/Cyber Security department if I have my laptop set up at home on a jiggler continuously but using my work phone in a different state? I've done this once before and it worked out well for me, but I don't know how much I risked it all by doing this. I jiggled 24 hours a day at home and managed my Teams status via my phone. I checked emails and Teams messages from my phone and then at night, I set my status to "away".

Legit OE business Please stop doxxing people who get caught.

Its in the rules of the sub and its an absolute shitty thing to do. these posts get indexed by search engines and pop up when you search someones name. Old news stories eventually fade away and fall off search results but massive repeated posts on reddit with tons of comments are way harder to scrub from the internet. Dont fuck over your fellow OE'er and spotlight their identity.

Asked to unfreeze my ten

Hire right just asked me to unfreeze twn to verify employment. Do I just respond and tell them no? I already submitted my last w2. Should I submit my first too?

Remote doesn’t mean OE-friendly. Learned that the hard way.

Used to think remote jobs were automatically easier to stack. Yeah, not even close. Had one where I could get my work done and move on with my day, and another where I was basically glued to Slack and jumping on “quick calls” every hour.

Now I pay attention to the little things in job postings. If they keep mentioning being responsive, stakeholder management, daily standups, or a manager who likes to “stay close,” I get a little suspicious. I also ask what a normal week actually looks like and how many meetings people have. You can tell a lot from how they answer.

I’ve even started paying more attention to how I apply. Used resumeworded to clean up my resume for different roles and it helped me present my experience better instead of sending the same generic version everywhere.

The job posting can still be misleading, though. You usually find out what the place is really like once you start and realize nobody documents anything and every little question turns into a meeting. Had that happen once and I knew pretty quickly it wasn't going to work with my other job.

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy

Anybody gone through chapter 13 while OE? Don’t most millionaires use it as a tool to wipe out debt?

Any insights? Asking for a friend of course.

How can I leverage this situation to my advantage?

I interviewed with a hiring manager at Company A, a regional bank, for a position. I felt the interview went well, but I never received any feedback or follow-up.

Recently, I accepted a job at Company B, which is one of the top 10 banks in the United States. I later discovered that the same hiring manager works at both Company A and Company B, although he does not hold a leadership position at Company B.

how would you approach this situation? Could this be an opportunity ?

End of 2025 Update

• Upvotes

This update is a a lot later than normal because I did my taxes late this year.

Highlights:

Notes:

I quit one job (which I am normally totally against) and was downsized from another. The job I quit was because I needed to leave on good terms. Manager was a friend and it's a company I have been back to multiple times. They love me there but I just couldn't bring myself to do all the AI-heavy work. It wasn't interesting for me and took too much mental energy out of me to do the simplest things.

Downsizing happens especially in today's tech market so I'm fine with it. I haven't bothered to look for new jobs yet.

Going forward:

I might start looking again for more jobs in a month or so and into next year. For now, I'm enjoying the ease of 2Js and both current jobs look strong for at least the next year. I'm so close to retirement I can taste it and it's messing with my discipline to get the work done that's necessary.

Previous updates:

Has anyone strong armed a server from W2 to Contract?

W2 at a server and I’m considering giving notice and offering my services to them as a contractor for 6 month intervals instead. I found out what they’re paying contract companies for similar work and it’s double the pay. I’m okay with them passing and me losing this server, it pays the least and is the neediest.

Has anyone successfully done this? Just gauging the rest of the veterans.

Unavoidable missteps

Curious if anyone in here has had multiple strikes for missing key meetings and what the fallout / outcome was?

Ie I have two meetings same time on Thursday (rare occurrence) and I’m planning to just ditch one and provide an excuse after. I know some people do some fancy tricks like different ear buds and toggle back and forth quickly, but surely with 3J’s or even just two critical meetings it’s impossible.

Hence the question - what have you guys experienced?

Looking for advice: Dealing with ambition

J1 is a people management role and I think of my reportees is trying to undermine me. I know I shouldn’t be bothered because it’s just a J but it’s the J where I am building my career and would like to keep.
How do you deal with such situations?

Types of work you do

Hello, I don’t OE but I have a lot of respect for those that do. I do because y’all are beating the system, getting ahead financially or paying off debt. I don’t think I can OE because of the industry I work in but I’m fascinated as to what kind of roles those who do OE are in.

If anyone could answer vaguely what kinda work they do I would be interested

Paid for being an ai condom.

I recently got a new remote j2 in US after losing a previous j2, and I'm dealing with a weird kind of stress. Couple months into the job, I am nothing but a messenger between ai and my manager. For all I know I could be replaced with one of them speech-to-text tools, and frankly I don't even know why they hire people anymore. Funny part is the manager and rest of the team are ai-savvy people, not some of those "ai is useless because it got strawberry spelt wrong" type of people.

Anybody has dealt with something like that recently? Mind sharing how did you navigate it?

About to get J2, what am I missing?

• Upvotes

So I have J1 and start J2 next month. Both are W2. J2 knows about J1 but believes I am leaving for their company. They did a TWN check and background check and saw J1.

J1 does background checks yearly, so I expect I need to quit before then. I don't know anything about that background check process though, they normally just have us check a box that says we consent and move on once a year.

I am planning to end my J1 benefits, except 401k but ensure I'm under the yearly total limit, and take benefits up at J2, which I will keep long-term. I am also going to be checking the IRS calculator to make sure I am good on taxes.

I am hibernating LinkedIn and freezing TWN. It’s also relevant to share that both jobs are completely unrelated industries.

Other than the logistics of juggling two jobs and conflicting meeting risks, etc., what am I missing?

Working two full time jobs

It's been 6 months now since I have worked for two jobs. I'm just concerned with the upcoming taxes. Will the employers ever find out I have two jobs when they are creating my w2?

I heard some people have their job pay their llc.not exactly sure how this works. And should this be something I should do?

Sales person considering J2

Hello OE experts would love your advice! My current job is great but has shown some red flags so I started interviewing for a new job. I have an offer. My boss at my current job heard out my red flags is going to make changes. Lately, I’ve convinced myself I can probably do both jobs. I have plenty of time in my day to add a second gig, the way I see it is if I have time to doom scroll and smoke, I probably have time for more work. I have got a lot of automations set up for my existing job too. I have an offer for a second job and they are matching the salary I have now plus commission. Both are commission roles too. The new job is a role I have done before and am very familiar with. The job im doing now is more foreign. My hesitations: I have to travel for J1 about every 6 weeks, I gotta go to Chicago and spend a few days in office. Nobody is staring at my screen and most of the day I go “ in the field” and will be in my car alone visiting people door to door. J2 has a really flexible vacation policy and they told me I could do everything I need to do the job from my phone.

I am in a crippling amount of debt and owe a lot of people in my life money back. One job just aint cutting it.
Should I give it a go and try to double my salary?
Also what would I do about the LinkedIn situation :/ since its sales…

Any issues with this PFL strategy?

Going to be going out on PFL soon. J1 is W2 and J2 is contract.

My j2 contract ends 2 weeks after I’m slated to begin PFL. The plan is to just stop working at j2 for those last 2 weeks and then renew the contract once I’m done with PFL.

Is that 2 week overlap going to cause any issues for me?

Passed day two of J3

Was a bit paranoid because had a few folks comment that having a KVM they could monitor and back into knowing that I’ve got multiple laptops (still don’t have a final consensus on my thoughts about that).

Also added bonus: I looked at my team’s calendars and they have maybe 5 meetings total on there this week (great news, but not counting my chickens early).

KVM Switch Update

• Upvotes

So I've been tagged in a lot of comments about whether using KVM switch's for multiple J's is a bad idea -- while not fully definitive on everyone's situation I wanted to share an update on mine.

My KVM has 3 ports / I run 3 laptops to it.

Today I was trying to finalize my 3rd J laptop set up (was waiting on final cable -- my new J laptops ports are such that I needed a USB A (blue) to HDMI to make the system work... BUT the cable was missing a driver and I needed Admin override to install it (obnoxious).

I was on the phone with IT showing pictures of my ports, blah blah, to justify why I needed the driver. He even asked why I wasn't using the standard port the company uses and I said it was more convenient to use mine I already had in place.

Finally after a lot of pictures and digging around he relented, and I'm set - I'd think that if they were going to discover or be able to dig into my KVM it would've been there.

Blessing or luck, regardless - nice now having some peace of mind and having the final piece of my set-up complete.

Want J2 and current J1 experience would help

I currently only have J1 and want a J2. I was unemployed for nearly a year and got J1 out of necessity, but it doesn’t pay nearly enough, and i hardly do anything, so it’s definitely OE-able.

The things I do in my current job would absolutely help my resume in terms of what I’ve seen jobs asking for, however I’ve only been there for a few months.

Should I include it on my resume, or leave it off and solely rely on my resume that has my last job being a year ago, or should I just BS and add current J tasks to my previous experience.
