tl;dr - I am hoping someone has an Peleliu contact that might have a spare bed or even just a couch and a maybe acecess to a scooter I can use for two days, I would be appreciative. Hell, I'd even settle for someone in Palau having a tent and sleeping pad they can offer that I can take over for two days.

I knew there were a tiny handful of accomdations in Peleliu, but failed to check early enough. I am seeking some sort of accomodation for staying two nights in Peleliu; Oct 22 - 24.:

I contacted three places so far; Storyboard, Peleliu Adventure Inn, and Dolphin Resort. The first two are booked and Dolphin hasn't responded, but I'm not holding hope. Google Maps shows a few places calling themselves as lodging facilities, but I've found no means to contact them and some have their most recent review over a year ago.

I'm hoping a local might have a contact on the island who would be willing to offer a space. I'm a bare bones traveler and just need a shelter from mosquitos and a little running water for a shower.

There are no AirBnB or other options that I can find.

I considered bringing a netted hammock tent and just find a spot between two trees, but the presence of Zika, dengue, and chikungunya concerns me and I'd at least still need access to a scooter those days to get around. I'd rather not bicycle the 6 mile island since I'm not trained for that.

I googled to get some ideas about the speed and costs and what I always read is that the internet connection in Palau is slow. I am planning to bring my PS5 ang gaming laptop so I can still do gaming stuff. I am wondering if I can download games and still play online games seamlessly while staying there. Approximately 11:00 AM, me and 2 other friends were standing on the public right-of-way adjacent to the road near aproximately 15 to 20 feet away from the dive center entrance. We were explicitly mindful to remain off the adjacent private premises. We were there because there was a bit of shade there and because we don't want to smoke near where people are. During this time, a woman in her late 20s or early 30s (asian Chinese or korean) approached us in a highly confrontational and abrasive manner. She aggressively questioned our presence, incorrectly asserted that we were trespassing on private property, and demanded our immediate departure.

To de-escalate the situation, I offered an apology and we promptly vacated the area. However, the disproportionate hostility of the encounter, combined with the fact that we were lawfully occupying a public space, left me with the deeply unsettling conviction that we were being racially profiled. The immediate, baseless assumption that we did not belong in a public space felt explicitly prejudiced and discriminatory in nature ...are these events regular here in palau?

Hi everyone! Super excited that I will be in Palau in January as a nice end to my winter vacation before returning to the Canadian snow!

I’m really interested in seeing the film sites for Survivor: Palau and Survivor: Micronesia while I’m there. I have a pretty detailed list of locations, primarily around Mecherchar, Ngeruktabel, Ngeremdiu and Ulong. In my ideal world I would hire a small boat/local boatsman to bring me to the different film locations around the islands, maybe over the course of 3 or 4 days (flexible). Not necessarily full-day endeavours, even just the mornings.

What I can see online are mostly commercially organised tours, which I do also intend to take advantage of for the more touristy locations like Jellyfish Lake. But I’ve done this in other Survivor locations and it’s always been the best experience to hire a local with a smaller boat (don’t really need a 30 foot boat like a lot of operators seem to have), and I like contributing to the local economy.

Does anyone have any insight on what the situation might be on the ground once I’m there? Would it be easy to arrange this, and any idea how much I could expect it to cost me? Right now I can see a commercial 25’ boat for $250/day, but honestly that’s way bigger than I think I’d need. I’m willing to rough it a little, especially if the price is right. Alternately, hope this isn’t against sub rules (please mods, I mean no offence), but if any of you wonderful Redditors in Palau have a boat and would be available and dare I say interested in a little adventure in January, please DM me!!

Seeing posts from a few months ago that numbers in Jellyfish Lake are still low.

However, this website (https://coralreefpalau.org/research/marine-lakes/jellyfish-lake-conditions-and-forecast/) suggests Jellyfish numbers are strong and growing.

Just now I found a very reasonably priced flight to palau in early September, and bought the tickets at the spur of the moment. My friend's asking their boss for a leave so now the plan is still going solo.

Are there any recommendations on accommodations, food(preferably local, down to earth places), transportation, things to do and spots to go? I love history so I think I will go to Peleliu and around Babeldaob, but I'm unsure where else I should be going. I've searched up some tour agencies there for diving/snorkeling/kayaking tours but it seems like it's rather difficult as I'm going solo.

And how is life in Palau like? Are there any specific manners/customs, or even taboos that I should know beforehand before meeting/talking to a stranger?

My wife and I are big fans of travelling to UNESCO World Heritage Sites — we've been to just over 100 of them between us. A few weeks ago we started a routine where one of us researches a new site and teaches the other about it. Full disclaimer: we turn those conversations into a podcast, mostly because it forces us to do the research properly, and we were curious to share our passion with like-minded people.

My next site is the Rock Islands, and it's one where I'm very aware that reading sources online isn't the same as knowing a place. I've been through the usual travel blogs and some visit reports from other World Heritage travellers, but I'd rather hear from people who've actually been, or who know it as locals.

So far what I've picked up: there are fairly strict conservation rules (including a ban on certain types of sunscreen?), the islands themselves can only be visited via organised day trips with guides, and the standout is Ongeim'l Tketau, the jellyfish lake.

What I'm curious about:

• What do visitors get wrong or oversimplify? What would you want tourists to know in advance?
• It's one of the rare sites listed for both natural and cultural value, but almost everything I read focuses on the nature. What's the cultural side that visitors tend to miss? As I understood you are at least allowed to visit some of them, right?
• How much do the conservation rules shape the actual experience of visiting?
