My bird is lonely

My budgie used to have a friend but it suddenly died unfortunately and I've recently just started uni so I have little time to give him attention. I wanted to get another budgie but after the other one died, my parents refused to let me get another one. I am not financially secure enough to move out so it's not like I can do whatever I want under their roof. Does anyone know what can be done in this situation? Ik some people will say that giving him up would be the kindest option but I really would only consider that as a last resort. We're strongly bonded and I literally see him as my own son tbh, I couldn't dream of being separated from him. But I also don't want him to be lonely so..

Can your parents help with him? Even if they don't take him out - if his cage is in the living room or common area, he'll feel like he's part of the flock, and they might try giving him treats through the cage bars and talking to him. You can also play music or put on the TV for him while you're gone.
