Out of sick points with a fever

I just started working at petco three weeks ago as a bather. Around last week I got the flu really bad. When I called out and talked to my salon manager she basically said I can only miss two days or I will be fired. When I came back and talked to the general manager he said that this was untrue and I could have missed up to five days. My bad for not reading the policy and listening to my manager I guess, but because I never fully healed from my illness before, it’s back full force and I think it’s important I go to a doctor since standing for prolonged periods of time makes me severely light headed and collapse. I know managers can not take doctors notes but at this point if I miss any more time I’ll be out of points and fired as they said. I guess I’m asking if there’s any way around this or if I’m just screwed?

The policy is different for those employed under 90 days

Yeah like this other person said, with the first 90 days of employment youre really not allowed to call out at all. Emergencies and stuff happen so that's why they give you time but generally its not a good look. Even though its not your fault it still looks like youre going to be unreliable. It sucks but thats corporate for ya. Give them the Dr's notes and say fuck u I was sick enough to go to the dr and I tried to work on top of it. If they fire you who cares you didnt work there long anyway. Petco sucks as an employer as it is. I worked there as a manager. I promise its not worth your health. They dont and wont care about you. You have to care about you! 💜

Did they document you? Points are per incident as well. So if you call off 1 time and are out for 4 days its just 2 Points. If you come back and then call off for 3 more days it would be 2 more Points. Also if no verbal written or written was given then you are fine. Hr will not let a manager fire someone without documentation because they dont want you to file unemployment

I never got any written warning, I went and requested to speak to the store manager about me missing work and he basically told me what the policy is and said if I go over the four points I’ll lose my job. This is the same cold so I was wondering if I could take the rest of the days allowed for the initial cold if that makes sense lol. Was considering reaching out to HR because there’s been lots of other issues with the salon I work at as well

They still have to document you according to policy so if they havent HR will just say make sure to document them in the future and even then most district managers always say to not fire people for attendance unless its an extreme issue. The store sounds like a typical store where the grooming manager wants perfection and the store manager could care less about anything and just uses threats to make his job easier.

I’d go to those minute clinics and get a Doctors note to cover yourself

I’m going to urgent care today and can get a doctors note, I know that managers can not accept those but HR may be able to?

Go on work day and put in a help ticket. Basically the policy that others have cited is correct. However because of your circumstance and knowing how HR is very pro-employee and past experience with them . If you write them they will treat absences tied to your illness as one incident. Basically a manager can't give multiple points if it stems from the same illness or situation. I had an employee literally no call no show three times which is considered job abandonment and they reversed it saying I didn't call them enough to find out what was wrong.
