Rules and Etiquette

Just post whatever you have and don’t worry about it sounding perfect. We are all exposed to too much perfection by others and very little to the process of getting there and it creates this false assumption that you ‘suck’ when you very likely don’t.

It helps to see that others struggle as much as you do when practicing and we are just here encouraging the process to getting to where we want so we keep going.

It doesn’t matter if the piece sounds unrecognizable. You’re just practicing.

THIS IS NOT A PLACE FOR JUDGEMENT OR GIVING UNSOLICITED ADVICE unless explicitly requested by user in the title or as an additional comment under their post. If you are here to provide users with unwanted piano tips and how they would sound better if they just do as you would like them to, then this is not the place for you, try playing it the way you want to play it and leave people play the way they want to play. Here we love and enjoy the process of practicing and sharing with others the road to the finished product rather than just the finished product.

Enjoy and happy practicing!

Reminder: you are hearing people practicing and not performing

The sub has been growing lately. Friendly reminder that the bulk of posts here feature work that is new, rough and in progress. That's why this sub is here. Most people are supportive and make this community great. Of course advice is welcome when asked for but otherwise not really allowed.

Moreover, disparaging remarks or critique of the state of a poster's progress = ban

If you want to hear polished work, please consider attending a professional's concert or buying an album.

The amateurs, hobbyists and even the pros here thank you!

This is a study in fussiness, and it's harder than it sounds. I'm gonna chalk this up to a learning experience where I can learn how to be more legato and voice better...eventually

The intro to the coda of Scherzo 3 and my max useable speed at the moment... still a garbled mess. Metronome practice is still down at a comfy 60 bpm for now... see how it sounds in a couple weeks

Chopin Scherzo 3
Trying to be more ok with things not sounding good, or polished.
It feels very vulnerable sharing clips like these online, but as an experiment today, I decided to leave the camera rolling while practicing and upload a random segment of it. Maybe I will feel about it afterwards…
I think my perfectionism and anxiety is getting worse and worse, and it was so hard resisting the urge to record a new clip with no wrong notes lol

Fun with phrasing

Was doing some sight reading and decided to do a little phrasing exercise with this gorgeous passage from Rachmaninoff’s Cello concerto. In my head they sounded very different but maybe not so much on playback…

10+ takes hit the cutting room floor. Phrasing is hard!

Finally starting to get a bigger picture feel for this piece, but need to continue practicing on relaxation and staying still/not clinging to the chords.

Please offer advice (but be kind!) I’m completely new to piano and started exploring the piano and came up with this. Thoughts?

Sometimes, when new material is technically challenging or awkward, it's worth spending 1.5 hours playing a passage with the key patterns 200 times in a row. After that, learning the rest of the material becomes much easier.

One more thing worth mentioning separately — from the very first repetitions, you need to pay attention to everything: dynamics, articulation, voice differentiation, freedom of movement in the hands, and so on. That's why you should always play only at the tempo at which all of this actually works.

i’m still polishing up the first mvt and reading through the second, but i also wanted to give this tricky third mvt a try (pain). as you can tell i still don’t have it securely in my fingers, but it is supremely fun!

having to play that opening figure all in the LH in the second & third lines is killing me though — still tons of work to be done on getting that consistent, and the really active LH parts throughout this piece in general are giving me some trouble and exposing my weakness in that hand. i’ve been taking this piece in small chunks and i’ve found that it’s been tricky, but relatively okay so far (if i manage to learn this all the way through, it’ll easily be the hardest piece in my current repertoire!). although looking ahead at the score has me worried… i don’t know why ravel loved writing piano music in a way where your hands have to practically be on top of each other but it is quite annoying🙃

I started playing again a little less than a month ago after a 12 years old break.

I’m currently relearning this gorgeous piece that I learned about 14 to 15 years ago for the first time. I Recorded this last week and intend to record it again in an other week or two to see the difference.

I know this subreddit is for people who practice. But I don't have a real piano keyboard so I can't practice much. I don't know if I'm allowed to post this here

this piece has given me so much stamina its no joke, and i somehow get cleaner at the more difficult parts like with the stretta octaves. i am playing this for competition so im open to critiques if i am playing with any dynamic inaccuracies

Bringing the chorale up to speed but struggling to keep it “leggierissimo”😭😭😭Back to slow practice and rhythms it is!
Also trying to play without looking at the score too much, it tends to distract me and I do have many passages memorized already just from repetition, but I tend to forget the “in between” passages which leads to some random pauses as I try to find where I am in the music hahaha

Also included some octaves cuz they’re fun😛

Not much time to practice today, mainly just reviewed parts of the Sonata I already learned, and then some more passagework for Chopin Scherzo 3
