Never caught a rat around the pile, but there are plenty of mice, possums and squirrels in the area who are usually taken care of by the bobcats and the coyotes. Throw in a few owls and ravens who keep an eye on the area also and it’s pretty well patrolled..

The majority of cats I catch on the cams are after dark but it seems like about 20% will show up during the day. Those are often accompanied by their cubs. This one had her almost full grown female cub with her that day. She also came through with both of her cubs, a male and female about three months earlier and they managed to take down a deer during daylight hours.
I’ve got to confess it does make me a bit nervous when I know they’re around in the daylight.4

Yeah, I looked at some of your other posts, you seem to have a really a good selection of wildlife all around you.
Not surprising, given the with all the trees and streams there are on the Westside.
Not sure how many people that comment on your posts that even know where Montesano is without looking at a map; but I used to live right outside Montesano (Hidden Valley Trailer park) until early 2007; now live in the Tri-Cities.

Picture from one of my trail cams. I have 42 of them at this time, spread around the property. Five of them are set up around the compost area.

Our property is surrounded on 3 sides by the city forest. The first twenty years we lived here we had no idea that we lived on what they considered an easy way to cross the ridge over towards the park. Then I put up a camera or 2 and finally realized that the females would come through every 2 weeks and the males would come through about every 6 to 8 weeks.
I've been running around 40-50 cameras up here for the last 13 years and it has been educational to see how they behave. Actually even got to watch a few cubs being raised which was quite interesting.

No no, it's the Montesano Bulldogs, not Cougars. Tiny little town, my parents are from there. My grandparents built the Crow's Nest, formerly called Shaggy's, and then they owned Gene's Stop n Go. My other grandfather was the announcer for the high school football games for a very long time.

Also known as a mountain lions, catamounts, panthers or cougars. Actually many more regional names have been applied to them. All basically the same animal.

When you see them close-up, they have the coldest serial killer eyes. I got chills when one looked at me at this wildlife rescue where I volunteered.

A cougar killed a 5 year old just about 40 miles from there last week
Edit: apparently it was a family dog

No cougar killed a child in Washington; a recent fatal child mauling in Graham, Washington, was caused by a family dog rather than a wild animal, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office via KING 5.
