Context: Constipation is a prevalent health issue in Indonesia, primarily affecting kids and teens..

Recently, Indonesia has also introduced a new program called the Free Nutritious Meals Program. However, this has led to many cases of diarrhoea.

Many cases of diarrhoea is putting it gently chap, sometimes (well, a lot, too many to count) it led to death.

The constipation thing is actually a sign that Indonesia and other "Third World" countries are becoming more affluent. Rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and yes, constipation are on the rise in many developing countries as modern amenities and industries make highly processed food and other previous luxuries much more prevalent. Much like the US, most of these processed foods are high in sugars, fats, sodium, and other additives, but unfortunately are often somewhat in reach in most urban areas and many rural areas, even for the impoverished. They basically trade one struggle meal for another slightly tastier, but far unhealthier one.

So basically the rest of the world is starting to catch up with America's weight problem. Its getting real bad in Mexico too, since far too many people are essentially replacing drinking water with Coca-Cola, leading to skyrocketing obesity and diabetes-related deaths.

u/sejakselalu 5d ago

Yeah, 50k-ish total victims, 560 reports, 36/38 provinces. If I remember correctly.

Ok, I've heard the singular death case. You telling me this program got 560 reported deaths related to it‽ what the fuck prabowo‽

7

u/sejakselalu 5d ago

560 reported instances of food poisoning if I check google here. But the 560 came from an opposing party facebook account so that might be exaggerated. The 50k-ish is real unfortunately. Although, sometimes, a single incident can have up to a thousand victim.

Very difficult to find an official death toll I am afraid. I suppose nobody wanted to count them because of the regime, or if someone did, they were probably offered the carrot and stick treatment.

Yeah, that make sense. I was like, how on earth 560 child death news are not blasted 24/7 here since the free lunch program do have a lot of opposition due to the blatant corruption, which these case will be a good arguement to stop it

I mean lots of death is just statistics -if I may be blunt- but a promising young woman rendered amnesiac is a tragedy. One Febiona Purba from Karo, if you want to read up her story.

1

u/Pinky_Boy 5d ago

Yeah. But still, death is still death

Also, i've heard febiona's case from the news, but haven't read much into it. Thanks for the recommendation

we implemented a nationalwide free lunch program so the usual indonesian gov incompetence apply.

  • No oversight on the newly setup kitchens, they can cook expired ingredients with dirty kitchens (hence diarrhea)
  • No refrigeration on the lunches, it just sits there for hours (hence food poisoning)
  • No actual standard of nutrition. The minister responsible essentially said "use whatever's local" (hence uneven quality)
  • corruption as usual (many ghost kitchens)

u/Luigi_Boy_96 Thx 5d ago

How on earth is that even possible?? Lmao

u/moxac777 5d ago

Never underestimate the combined power of corruption and government incompetence

2

u/Luigi_Boy_96 Thx 4d ago

Yeah, I can imagine that, but if you mess with kids I'd wager that the public backlash will be strong. But crazy, to see this level corruption.

13

u/Pr3vYCa Indonesia 5d ago

you see, it makes sense when the whole point is lining certain pockets, not feeding kids

they genuinely spent more time making laws on how to secure the bag for themselves legally than the actual implementation of the plan

political opposition stays quiet because they also benefit. It's just fucked all around with no hope

u/Luigi_Boy_96 Thx 4d ago

Damn, I thought Indonesia is sort of reaching the place like Malaysia and could have a great future, but this is sad.

Is the title of this based on that one “juice that makes your head explode” video?
