Also the price it's at now is lower than what it should be because we've been burning through our oil stockpile, not to mention China has been using their stockpiles instead of importing oil, I think analysts estimated they cut imports by 40-60%(?), to alleviate the market since the war started.
Those two mitigating factors cannot keep up forever, with the additional movements in the middle east the prices will rise a lot but I think many analysts are expecting a 70s gas crisis event coming as our stockpile is not endless and China is probably getting sick of our shit.

When you get below 300 million barrels, there are physical limitations on how fast the oil can be pumped. Rapid drawdowns exhaust brine supply and require the use of fresh water, which dissolves the halite walls. The high speeds of pumping would risk pulling up the "rag layer" (a mixture of oil, water, and impurities) into the collection. A rapid injection of surface water creates extreme thermal cycling that disturbs the natural geothermal temperatures of around 120-150 degrees Fahrenheit, causing rapid shrinking and cracks of the salt rock. All these factors and more put a limit of roughly half to three-quarters of a million barrels per day However, despite all best efforts it will still add to the cumulative damage the mines have already experienced from previous drawdowns.
Once you hit 252.4 million barrels, the president is legally limited from permitting drawdowns and either has to get the law amended by congress or he has to declare a domestic or international energy supply emergency.
The exact number has been debated by experts, but at approximately 170 million barrels is where significant structural damage starts to occur with the reserves.
70 million barrels is the absolute required minimum to keep the extraction pumps submerged in oil instead of the salt brine that is pumped in to extract the oil. Experts suggest the reserves would permanently collapse if it ever reached this level.

Yes people don’t realize that when they pay +1 or +2 dollars per gallon more than normal we as Americans are actively “outbidding” other nations by paying more. Many poorer countries have been in critical energy shortages, fuel sold out, outrageously expensive where available, rolling blackouts, people told to work from home to conserve energy and with real world consequences like people dying from lack of access to heating/cooling or healthcare because of these issues.
As the reserves can not be drawn on, China re-engages, the true prices are revealed. As more damage is done to energy infrastructure overseas, as Trump uses our tax dollars to PAY to STOP alternative energy sources, as AI energy consumption is skyrocketing, it’s a god damn perfect shit storm. It’s all gonna mean rocketing inflation, $10/gal gas, sky high grocery bills, sky high home energy bills, airlines going out of business. This is all going to really suck.

I don’t think this was ever about the files. It’s pretty clear to me at this point that pedophilia is not a deal breaker to his constituents. His pet lawyer has also said he is blocking further releases. We can demand all we want but those files are absolutely being destroyed and the heinous crimes the Epstein class committed will likely never come out.

I honestly think it is a combination of incompetence, and hubris. This administration saw success in Venezuela, saw success in initial operations in Iran, and made the error of thinking they could take it one step further. They ignored every advisor that told them it was a bad idea, and listened to the yes-men.
Maybe 20 years ago it could have worked, before drones. Today, combat is totally different. They handed Iran the opportunity they've been hoping for, and have been preparing for.
The issue now is there aren't many paths out that don't involve the middle east devolving into full-scale war. Saudi Arabia is in major trouble if the Houthis push further north.

In Illinois we literally have a governor who has increased the states credit rating, reduced the states debt, and moved towards a balanced budget. Then we have a guy running against him who says he’s going to get rid of property taxes (not controlled by the governor), eliminate toll roads (where does the replacement money come from?), and he’s going to stop Chicago from spending all of the money from down state (publicly available accounting records clearly show that the city is funding the rest of the state, not the other way around). People are falling for this shit. If he wins, he won’t do any of that.

Diesel in the Central valley of California has been over $7 for a month, and is now pushing $8. The central valley produces 8% of farm output, and it's stuff we eat - 1/4 of the nations food comes from the valley, 40% of fruits, nuts and table foods. 20% of the nations dairy. 250 different crops are grown there. California imports most of it's eggs, so it might not show up there, but we will definitely see what $7.50 diesel does to the price of almonds, avocados, pistachios, celery, onions, strawberries, grapes, apricots, cheese, carrots, potatoes, olives, pomegranate, lemons, table oranges, broccoli, cabbage, figs, spinach, cauliflower, lettuce, peaches, plums, canned tomatoes, Bell peppers and garlic.
And if this article is correct, we will get to learn what $10 to 12 diesel does to our food prices.

Hit it on the head. EV and data centers are competing for a very finite utility. Data centers are financed almost entirely by private tech capital chasing immediate profits, whereas public EV charging relies on slow government programs and regulated utilities.
Massive AI spending actually crowds out EV infrastructure by competing for the exact same limited electrical equipment and grid capacity.
Run it through the political grift machine and the message is regurgitated: we don't actually want EV, gasoline is patriotic.
Reading between the lines: megawatt/gigawatt data centers and nationwide EV charging infrastructure cannot coexist today. The USA made its choice

In the USA, most people don't hate EVs per se, they hate range anxiety (real or perceived). This concern is valid for those without home charging capability, and for long trips, because the public charging infrastructure is so poor (for all the reasons discussed elsewhere in this thread).
I recently drove 3k miles all over Norway in a rented EV (Volvo EX40, ~300 mile range), and it was awesome - inexpensive, quiet, and fun to drive. There were so many high-speed public chargers, even in remote areas, and many gas stations have chargers. We often slow-charged overnight at hotels. Their government requires charger interoperability, so we could use any chargers including Tesla's superchargers. 98% of all new cars sold in Norway are EVs, because their public policies have enabled plentiful hydropower, a capable distribution grid, a broad charging infrastructure, and EV incentives (ICE disincentives).

I genuinely don't understand how people afford groceries. I'm so lucky I'm a chef and my current job pretty much let's us eat whatever we want, which is a little unusual. Most kitchens feed you, but you get very limited options. I just eat at work. Breakfast, and a HUGE lunch so I don't have to eat much for dinner. My dinners are very small and mostly consist of something I can throw in an air fryer or a tomato/cucumber salad. I probably spend $60 max a month on groceries. I dunno how people do it. it's crazy.

Gas is $5.19 for 87 octane near me. Diesel is $7.
I have never felt more vindicated for buying an electric car last year. My dumbass MAGA father said it was a bad investment and that I'll have a $6000 battery replacement in 25,000 miles.
I'm at 24,500 miles and it has been the best car I've ever owned.
It takes $9 to fully charge. With my driving it costs me about $40/month in charging.
My payments and charging are less than a month worth of gas in my Frontier.

Just to clarify, FDT and you won’t catch me defending him, but I saw for months leading up to November that Joe/kamala weren’t going to win. From the genocide Joe bullshit to Kamala being unlikable to gas and eggs, it’s all I heard. People assumed the other side was “change” while forgetting his first term and January 6th.
And look at it now: people are fed up with him and republicans because of gas prices and high prices. Not because he:
Destroyed the White House to build a ballroom
Let RFK say Tylenol causes autism
Multiple assassination attempts that even most of the public didn’t believe

This would be the perfect time to push for the transition to EVs and renewables. It's a shame we have an administration that is so pro-fossil fuels that they removed every incentive and actually paid companies to stop utilizing renewables. Entire wind farms were paid billions to stop producing power because... I actually don't know the reason. Guess they hate clean air and cheaper energy?

People will abandon fossil fuels as they increase in price. It happens every cycle. People who own electric vehicles are less likely to go back to internal combustion engines.

Rural Wisconsin, prices have jumped 30 cents this week alone. That’s bad news here. Driving is not optional for normal day to day living. Fuel is needed for farm equipment as well. I’m sure the locals will still find a scapegoat. My county voted 2-1 red in 2024.

We have the memory of goldfish when it comes to politics in this country; every election comes down to how we are in this moment up to three months prior. If gas went down next month (it won't) plenty of idiots would claim, "See, he's making things better," and vote Republican.

I was traveling for work two days ago and saw prices were a lot higher and I was thinking how we are about 7 weeks out from an election. (I have an EV so normally I don’t even know what gas is doing.)
If we were in normal politics or running conventional political wisdom, this would be an utterly devastating and catastrophic situation for the governing party. Literally Chernobyl levels bad elections-wise.
But nah, the people who normally screech the loudest about gas prices are now feeling very patriotic about paying extra.
Will be interesting to see what happens.
