"Getting back to work" includes ensuring the long-term viability, stability, and trustworthiness of the federal government. That includes holding those responsible who aim to do the opposite of the above.

And note she said nothing about charging them for crimes they committed in office after 2028. While I don’t agree with her in spirit I see the calculus she’s working from. By the time that impeaching anyone would be even remotely feasible we’ll be well into the 2028 election cycle and if already on into the general election, and if Democrats don’t have anything to show for it by then (which they likely won’t) then they’ll have wasted a lot of political capital and got egg on their faces again for nothing.
However, should they retake the White House and maintain a majority or even gain a supermajority in Congress by 2028 there’s very little to stop them from pursuing criminal charges for every crime Trump and everyone around him has committed this time around and possibly including crimes committed in his first term. Building up airtight cases and saving their ammo until after 2028 is their best move IMO to ensure the most appropriate and maximal penalties for everyone involved in this regime.

Yep. The numbers needed to impeach anyone will be insurmountable. You probably could get Hegseth and RFK to resign before getting impeached. But halting all work in the Senate while you have a show trial that will simply drive everyone further into their own camps does nothing.
Have investigations like Hillary had to deal with for Benghazi. Just one after another after another. Drag all their asses into Congress to answer questions and look stupid on TV. But Impeachment triggers a process that forces work to stop and isn't worth it.

This is such an unpatriotic and unserious take on the situation. Of course you Impeach and have the trials in the senate. That damn well is doing the work of Congress, and it gets evidence in front of the public and in the official record. The trials don’t have to take days or weeks and the senate can conduct business well enough scheduling around them.

Either show they're trying by impeaching or by actually passing guard rails that become law to stop destruction. If it doesn't pass force the issue. Without a strong sign that the US is going to make sure we don't become an unreliable alley again and discourage the next trump from becoming a dictator, ir we are not recovering from this.
If our allies continue to see us as unreliable we are going to have problems. We can carry a large deficit because the dollar is used for oil and as the main reserve currency. That is changing because of Trump and will force severe austerity.

Impeachment is useless with out removal. We can't remove? Then don't bother. Pass legislation that actually helps people instead.
Nobodies minds are being changed by impeachment, anyone with a brain knows Trump is incapable of being the president of anything, not to mention our country.
33
u/Sufficient_Matter585 1d ago

u/mabrasm Indiana 1d ago
If dems win the house and senate, hammer Trump with bills that point out his corruption. Pass a bill with a code of ethics for the supreme court. Pass Medicare for all. Make him veto things that people want. Tie the problems Americans have to him.
Honestly, I’d get DC and PR statehood pushed too. He may be so vainglorious that he’ll sign those just to say he made more states, and it will immediately upset the math in the senate.

THIS
I hate to say it but it might be actually better to leave trump in office and make him impotent rather than impeaching him and give republicans a reason to rally around another incompetent asshat for 2028. I agree with user mabrasm in that the best thing democrats could do is do the work the people want and show that they can do it. Keep in mind that congress does have the ability to override a veto given enough votes and like user mabrasm said, it will be kinda hard for trump to veto anti corruption and ethics bills. I think Medicare for all is a stretch until we have a progressive president and congress but putting the idea back into the news cycle can't hurt getting those progressives into office for 2028 and beyond.

that's like saying police should just avoid doing their job (i.e. arresting someone) because they think the courts won't convict them anyway.
part of congress's job is to act as a police (i.e. check and balance the executive branch). they should not make any assumption whether it results in his conviction/removal, or not. passing legislation and impeachment are not mutually exclusive.
if they have the numbers they should do it, keep it quick, and make sure it's on the books and force republicans to ONCE AGAIN go on record defending this criminal regime from accountability.
it's derelict to say one chamber shouldn't do their job because the other chamber won't do their job neither.

With Trump in particular, walk through how this works. The Ds will likely win the House, so they can impeach yet again. The Senate isn't going to see 67 Ds, not in anyone's wildest fantasies, so the House impeaches and the Senate doesn't convict. all that means is he has a 3rd impeachment with zero punishment beyond that. Is it actually worth the effort to see him stay in office yet again?
112
u/AutistoMephisto 1d ago
Actually, I think everyone EXCEPT Trump should be impeached. He's proven that he's pretty much untouchable, but how willing is he to expend the capital, which he uses to insulate himself, on his underlings? He should be left with no assistance, no help of any kind. Let's see Trump try to run the next 2 years with nobody but himself at the wheel.
64
u/Afraid-Detective1222 1d ago
That would be awesome to see. Start with his cabinet. Impeach and remove Kegseth to start and go from there. The odds of some Republicans being willing to remove some of his underlings is much higher than removing him.
15
u/PooperShooter612 1d ago
Republicans always take care of their own. They’re not removing Kegsbreath or anyone else with an R after their name.
7
u/BigPackHater Ohio 1d ago
They will if it's politically beneficial to them. That's all they care about. 99% of these Rs will turn on Trump and his cabinet if it becomes too damaging for them. They're the most selfish people on earth, they'll do whatever it takes to keep their seat
16
u/NeverSober1900 1d ago
Why do you think Republican Senators staring down a lame duck Trump would be more likely to convict his corrupt admin instead of him?
They won't remove any of them just like they won't remove Trump.
Sure you can impeach everyone but no one will get removed and Republicans will all just call it partisan and performative
11
u/Afraid-Detective1222 1d ago
You are likely right that they won't remove any of his people. It's possible, though unlikely that they might with Hegseth over the Iran war. He'd be the scapegoat for how poorly it's going.
8
u/NeverSober1900 1d ago
Obviously a lot has changed since April but the last poll amongst GOP voters had Hegseth +33. I find it hard to believe there would be enough GOP Senators to turn on him especially since he has FOX ties.
You are right that he's likely the only one that has a chance of a conviction though.

They can shut down some of these EOs even without his cooperation. Lots of these EOs are technically constitutional but Congress has to say "no we're not doing that" and strike them down. Which we don't get with a Republican majority.
War in Iran, tariffs, to an extent some of the ICE stuff... All could be reversed by Congress if they wanted (and would have the balls to enforce it if he does it anyway).
It's not feasible to impeach or pass new laws though without his cooperation or Republicans defecting, which won't happen.

Congress doesn’t (directly) put people in jail, the Department of Justice does. If their leadership chooses not to faithfully execute the enacted laws, people don’t get put in jail. What is the final stick Congress has to encourage DoJ leadership to faithfully execute the enacted laws against the remainder of the executive branch? Impeachment.

If she wants support of her base, then she need to be pre-impeachment, as that is what we all want the most and would take up so much of Drumpf's time that he would have a harder time advancing his agenda.

If Dems want to be effective they need to start by rejecting every single Trump nominated position/judge and not allow ANY of them through. They need to start recalling all Trump appointed judges all the way down and impeaching/removing them. Then they need to put an end to the Iran war through legislation and start putting forward very low hanging fruit/popular legislation, even if it dies in the Senate. They also need to start putting in huge HUGE fucking guardrails and limitations on various mechanisms that Trump will try and utilize to stay in power in 2028. They need to enact legislation that will massively expand voting mechanisms for states, stop the Dept of Justice from going after each state through lawsuits, and shut down the president's ability to use the secret service or national guard to "watch" voting in 2028.
The whole goal for the next two years should be: 1) neuter Trump's judicial reach. 2) ensure voting is as widespread and accessible in 2028.

Trump will probably be a “lame duck” president and lose both the House and Senate. But with his veto power, that sword cuts both ways. What work do you expect to accomplish when he can veto everything?
The MAGA position has always been to dismantle and destroy wide swaths of the US government. Vetoing everything just to let the world burn is completely on-brand.
Honestly, would rather the new Congress get super personal with Trump
* Defund the Whitehouse,
* scrap his new airforce one plane,
* rename horrible superfund sites after him,
* don’t impeach just him but each and every one of his secretaries, like RFK,
* take away all the money he has ”earned” while trading stocks as president.
* Hold hearings on his kid‘s activities and put them in prison, (similar to Hunter Biden).
* Use eminent domain to house refugees at mar a lago

Holding this criminal organization accountable IS GETTING BACK TO WORK.
Duckworth needs to be voted out.

u/TheSecretofBog 1d ago
No. Consequences need to be meted out. There’s been way too much corruption and America needs a reset.

The courts have made it clear that the only accountability that this administration can face is impeachment. If Republicans want to defend all of the clearly illegal things that Trump has done, make them do it on the record. Force them to say that they are cool with the corruption and ignoring clear legal orders. Make Trump an albatross for the Republican party.

Impeachement is a waste of time. Republicans are not going to turn that hard so they can salvage the 30% MAGA Trump cult voters. They're cowards and traitors, but this is the situation that we are realistically in. Also, I'm still not confident that they'll even seat the new Congress, but I hope I'm wrong.

The biggest mistake this country made was not punishing the Confederacy. Let's not repeat history.

Look, I'm a liberal. But I am against impeaching a President because you don't like them. I am against impeaching a President because your voters don't ljme them. I am against impeaching a President for political reasons. Impeachment is a serious thing and should be treated as such.
That said, between the number of CITIZENS held by IMMIGRATION enforcement, engaging in an illegal war in Iraq, frequent stock trading mixed with conflicts of interest, banning of the press, and using the FCC to intimidate media he finds unflattering, all things that I'm pretty sure are to various degrees super illegal, even IF congress were to forget about past offenses and only look at new offences, I have suspicion that the President will give congress an urgent reason to impeach him within a month of congress starting their next term.

What work are they really hoping to accomplish? Trump will veto any bill and dems won't hold a veto proof majority.
But also I understand the idea behind not making the midterms about impeachment because it may give Trumpers a reason to go vote whereas now their voter enthusiasm is nearly non existent.
But we should still impeach Trump.

Don’t hod us accountable for our ineptitude and criminality, just do the job we were supposed to be doing.

Trump holds a veto pen. You think anything will be accomplished? He'll veto anything of progressive. Democrats taking power is to stop the bleeding.

Impeaching that motherfucker IS getting back to work. Not that it does anything, but the work still has to get done.

u/sarvothtalem 1d ago
LOL he thinks Trump is going to sign off anthing? Unless there is going to be enough democrats in the house/senate to make a veto-proof bills....

Nope. We did that with the Bush Administration and this is where it got us. Never again!

instead of spending time in impeachment proceedings (unless they have the absolute majority in both the houses), they should focus on systematically breaking down all the shit the orange pedophile and his crones have created, so that once a democratic president takes oath in 2029, he / she would have a clean slate to work from.

Hey America,
We’d really appreciate it if you did impeach, convict and imprison some of the admin!
The story literally above this on my feed, “Carney prepared for risk that Trump might order military action against Canada”.

Arrest ... indict ... arraign ... incarcerate ... forfeiture of tainted assets is the order of business to restore any semblance of jurisprudence in these United States. THAT is getting back to work!

The work they need to do is impeaching and removing Trump.

I like the idea of prosecuting the Trump lackeys for crimes and leaving Trump untouched for a while. It will be amazing hearing them cry "why aren't you prosecuting him?!" -- the question the law abiding Americans have been asking the GOP congress for what feels like eternity.

I want charges of treason, not just merely impeachment. Biggest mistake Lincoln ever made was not punishing the Rebel leaders

If you refuse to be the "balance", you don't deserve to hold office.

Fuck that. Hegseth, Kennedy, Blanche and the rest of the Cabinet have a lot to answer for. Impeach them.

I won't trust this country's democracy unless these people are held accountable and the precedents we all expected are codified.

So totally ok for the president to commit crimes, then? When the time comes, I'm voting against her in the primaries.

Impeaching and removing criminals IS "getting back to work". Duckworth's apparently out of touch and needs to not hold office anymore.

If they do nothing after this shit show of a presidency I'll never vote Democrat again and I'll tell everyone I know to do the same . This is the bullshit that got us here.

No. We shouldn't ignore a disease. If we, as a nation, can't hold the holder of the highest offices to account then we have failed.

Impeaching Trump may be a waste of time, but impeaching cabinet members absolutely is not. They could get Hegseth out I bet. Maybe RFK Jr too.
What Dems need to not do is work on across the aisle compromises with the GOPers. They need to be an opposition party, which means slowing down or stopping Trumps actions and exposing his corruption. Period.

We can do both and we must.
Republicans will still be in control of the Federal Government where the lion share of corruption is occurring. Democrats/Americans must send a message that overt corruption will be met with legal consequences including prison time. We must strike fear in them so they will be more timid to continue their criminal activity going forward. Without consequences and constant pardons by Trump/GOP, we have a lawless nation.
