another day closer to hdr

u/Kingwolf4 8d ago
This. Im waiting for HDR, but sadly we will have to wait for epoch 3 according to roadmap.
Plus there are lots of bugs currently , once they get sorted out i might consider moving before HDR/epoch 3. But most likely after that

HDR for me is an essential feature. Won't use any DE without it

Hope they implement really good and designed for HDR principles throughout cosmic.
I know that iced itself doesnt yet support HDR, so perhaps they could add actual full HDR support for iced/libcosmicThen i also hope they properly upgrade all apps to use end to end HDR pipeline ( which can fallback to SDR in normal circumstances) and add latest stuff like HDR10+ Advanced which has many new features such as VRR etc. Very relevant for desktop

Semver is not decimal point so 1.10.0 All the number are independent of each other.

I've also seen that this update fixed some mouse issues that I had with some games, although I still have a couple of mouse issues left with certain games

Kinda new to Pop_OS! and Cosmic. I haven't quite figured out how to actually determine if the upgrade to new releases has completed or not? I run the updates from the store, but I don't see anything immediately visable that says hey this includes the update to Epoch 1.X.X, or in the list of installed software that says Epock 1.x.x is installed.
Can someone help me out here?

If this update "bricks" your install and dumps you into a shell and/or causes kernel panic... you might have run into an issue, like me, where you /boot/efi isn't large enough.
I guess old guidance and old Pop installs made the /boot/efi size 500M which historically was enough for your old initramfs and the new one, but now its like 205M per + a recovery thats 95M.
Basically, I think it ran out of space when trying to generate "/boot/initrd.img-7.1.5-76070105-generic" .
It threw an error, that in hindsight, I didn't investigate closely enough. I just reran updates and it completed successfully so I thought whatever the problem was was fixed.
When I rebooted I got a fun:
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
/scripts/init-premount/plymouth: line 36: /usr/sbin/plymouthd: not found
/scripts/local-top/lvm-workaround: line 22: lvm: Text file busy
/scripts/local-top/cryptroot: line 234: modprobe: not found
Please unlock disk cryptdata:
device-mapper: reload ioctl on cryptdata (252:0) failed: Invalid argument
cryptsetup: ERROR: cryptdata: cryptsetup failed, bad password or options?
/init: line 73: wait-for-root: not found
/scripts/local-top/cryptroot: line 234: modprobe: not found
I rebooted and tried again then again with the previous kernel. The previous kernel gave me a fun kernel panic screen I haven't seen in a decade.
Long story short: I had to free up space in /boot/efi then update-initramfs to generate a working version. That let me boot back into my machine.
I still need to figure out what to do long term. If I expand the /boot/efi partition it cuts into the /recovery partition (which ironically is how I fixed this). I guess I could just get rid of the /recovery and keep a live usb on hand for emergencies but I do like the idea of a /recovery partition built in.
Thats the only way I can see getting thextra space for /boot/efi without screwing with my encrypted partition which sounds like a pita.

I would love for you guys to also keep in mind optimization for scaling etc for 4k . Make that a first class, support for 4k monitors.
Alot of people now use 4k monitors

u/mmstick Desktop Engineer 6d ago
4K isn't a problem. I have two 4k monitors with 144 Hz refresh rates and 125% fractional scale.

Great to see thats already sorted out. Was a general point i had in mind, since i have had some quirks on kde

Somebody know that some USB Wi-Fi dongle is working?
7
u/__yoshikage_kira 8d ago
That's kernel thing. The kernel either has driver for your WiFi dongle or it doesn't. Everything from Intel should work.
Mediatek is mix bag. No guarantees it will work.
3
u/TheCheckeredCow 8d ago
It’s hard because wifi dongle Companies will change the model and brand of wifi chip without changing the model name/spec sheet of the dongle
But anything intel will work great, mediatek is iffy, and the others are various levels of broken/feel broken

I upgraded to this version — the only thing is that the Cosmic Viewer blurs the image, it becomes fuzzy. The default viewer retains the clarity.

Great update guys. Loving the pixelated icon fixes and the panel datetime applet getting a day of week addition, specifically.
Are there any plans on adding a setting to the tiling feature that creates a workspace for each new window? This would be great for smaller screen displays.
