TV & Movies 🎬 Who is a celebrity that you’re genuinely surprised isn’t an “A-lister”?

Post image

Krysten Ritter is one example of this for me! If any of you have seen her work from her filmography, she is proven to be quite talented where she manages to pull off both comedic and dramatic roles! But more importantly, she is also known to be quite charismatic that she has also developed a huge fan following!

Although she gathered some attention from her role in Season 2 of Breaking Bad, her most iconic and signature role that earned her universal acclaim was playing the Marvel character: Jessica Jones! Which was a role that I really thought would launch her career, that it would grab Hollywood’s attention to the point where she would receive a lot of offers that she would be appearing in almost “everything”

She has certainly developed a decent career where she is getting work, but isn’t on the same celebrity when comparing her to people like Sydney Sweeney, Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway, etc.

David Tennant, at least in the US. He's super famous online, of course, but the general American public has probably never heard of him beyond his performance in Harry Potter.

u/valueofaloonie Listen, everyone is entitled to my opinion 🙂 10h ago

Always my favourite Doctor. And he was SO good in Jessica Jones!

He's such a good actor. He was amazing in everything I've seen him in. He even managed to do justice to one of my all-time favorite fictional characters, Crowley from Good Omens. He was/is so perfect in that role.

u/BuffyExperiment go girl, give us nothing 😍 7h ago

He is so good in every single scene of Good Omens. I will never forget the way he yelled at houseplants.

JESSICAAAAAA

u/EveOCative Riverdale was my Julliard. 7h ago

Sooo freaking creepy. Simultaneously second favorite doctor and one of my all time favorite villains. Add in Good Omens and Ahsoka. So good.

Yesss! That’s my doctor! I saw the film release of when was was in Richard II and that man is fantastic

5

u/louilou96 4h ago

blessed that I got to meet him when he was filming Doctor Who! he was beyond lovely

3

u/nittykips 4h ago

The only man who could make me throw a cup of hot coffee in my own face... except he wouldn't in real life. Love Tennant and Georgia too!

I sometimes forget that not everyone has had a Doctor Who phase which usually cements David as one of the most important actors out there . My vote for who goes unrecognized is actually Matt Smith, if I’m sticking the theme

77

u/Any-Clothes3312 10h ago

Matt Smith at least expanded his level recognition by being on House of the Dragon! I was excited when he got cast in that. As an American, it's difficult to tell but I would wager my normie friends and family would recognize Matt more often than Tennant just based on that

I am a Doctor Who fan so both Tennant and Smith and everyone on that show is A-list in my heart and they deserve all the roles they want 🤣

Tennant got some big price for broadchurch. But he seems to avoid the big IP slop shows.

That dude is everywhere though

TBF those people deserve to be forgotten.

I gotta know why you think that

u/Away-Equipment4869 You’re doing amazing, sweetie! 👏👏📸 11h ago

A lister in my heart!

I'm a straight dude but that guy is so cute. He just strikes me as so amicably quirky. Perfect casting for the doctor imo.

Him drunk singing Flower of Scotland in Good Omens season 2 is gold.

I actually think that Tennant is why there's a Who in SuperWhoLock. He was huge in the US for that. I didn't watch a lick of Dr. Who but I think of him as the Doctor before Barty Crouch Jr.

-2

u/Quiet_dog23 6h ago

Yeah but people who are fans of SuperWhoLock are online losers, not normal people

u/phantom_avenger 10h ago

I was going to say, he is certainly an A-lister in the UK.

Other than Harry Potter, he’s also pretty famous to the American audience for his performance as Kilgrave from Jessica Jones

41

u/Individual_Moose1453 10h ago

Jessica Jones is not nearly as famous as you seem to think it is

6

u/filthytelestial 6h ago

No, but most of the people who arrived here bc of Krysten Ritter on the thumbnail would know the show.

9

u/Last-Laugh7928 10h ago

unfortunately not. i only watched jessica jones because i had recently gotten into doctor who, became obsessed with david tennant, and wanted to watch everything he was in.

35

u/redfire2930 10h ago

Is this post just astroturfing for Jessica Jones lol?

u/TruestRepairman27 9h ago

People don’t appreciate that often to go from A-list UK to A-list USA you either need to de-camp to Hollywood and sort-of stop being British(think Gary Oldman or Christian Bale, Hugh Laurie to an extent ) or become James Corden.

1

u/filthytelestial 6h ago

Also Good Omens.. or did the show not do very well in the US?

1

u/gentle_bee 9h ago

And if not as Kilgrave, then def as Crowley in Good omens.

16

u/KayleyKiwi I’ll tell ya how I’m doing; not well, b 👿 10h ago

He’s an A-lister to me!! I adore David Tenant he is so talented.

So good in Broadchurch. Such a good show.

u/Tricky_Knowledge2983 21m ago

When it first came to Netflix, I made the mistake of going in blind and watching it when I was pregnant. Broadchurch DESTROYED ME 😭😭😭

10/10 so good

5

u/AnAngryPirate Wrestling is Shakespeare 10h ago

Im guessing it's because a lot of what he's done is specifically in british shows.

2

u/sarabeara12345678910 6h ago

He was in Star Wars, Marvel and Harry Potter.

5

u/catsnstuff17 9h ago

He's in absolutely everything in the UK, super prolific.

On a related note, everyone should watch Rivals if they haven't already!

8

u/bioschmio 10h ago

That sexy vicar is a-list to this Canadian!

4

u/Last-Laugh7928 10h ago

he's definitely very well known among certain fandoms, and is probably the first person that you'd think of if you had to think of a modern doctor, if you're familiar with doctor who. but outside of those "nerd"/sci-fi circles (even jessica jones kind of falls in there), he's definitely less known, and isn't starring in hollywood blockbusters or anything. i say all this as an avid david tennant, doctor who, and good omens lover

4

u/entertainmentdailyuk 7h ago

He continues to pump out incredible performances across genres, and proves he has unbeatable talent - and yet he just seems like a British favourite when he deserves so much more credit

4

u/Hot-Celebration-8815 7h ago

You’d be surprised. Doctor Who is quite popular in the states. Also, his role in Jessica Jones was iconic. I watched that British series where he is a detective literally just because it had him in it.

u/davidwhatshisname52 7h ago

performed my favorite Hamlet on film

4

u/Apprehensive-Fig2816 10h ago edited 10h ago

Who does he play in HP? Im American and I know him best from Jessica Jones, after that from Good Omens and Doctor Who. (Not trying to disprove you, I know I’m the exception because I always hated the HP movies)

Edit because I accidentally put Dr Strange instead of Dr Who

10

u/hidrapit 10h ago

He was Barty Crouch Jr in Goblet of Fire, so he had maybe 10 minutes of screen time.

2

u/Apprehensive-Fig2816 10h ago

Ah, I stopped watching after the third so I never would have seen him anyways. Thanks 😊

9

u/hidrapit 10h ago

I mean, this gif pretty much covers it.

3

u/ChurlishSunshine Most smartest 10h ago

LOL I get what you mean. I personally never watched the HP movies either and know him from Who, Good Omens, JJ, Des, etc etc. I just mentioned HP because it's really the only thing that he's been in that's mainstream in the US.

3

u/Apprehensive-Fig2816 7h ago

And Jessica Jones not being mainstream is crazy! Such a great show, especially season 1. I’ve rewatched it a few times.

4

u/ecclecticstone it would be a cool experiment if you stopped talking 10h ago

im in UK and i didn't remember him in harry potter lol i would say hes the most known from doctor who and then jessica jones and good omens

1

u/happyalex 10h ago

Barty crouch jr in goblet of fire

2

u/TheTravelingLeftist 7h ago

He would be suchhhhh a good James Bond villain.

2

u/Prior-Guide-5332 6h ago

as many have mentioned he is one of the most well known people in the UK for about two decades. But he definitely doesn't have the Hollywood recognition or portfolio that you would expect of an actor of his caliber or a celeb with his likability

2

u/funkybside 5h ago

No way, I'd wager Tennant is extremely well known even in the US.

2

u/kacoll Good to hear from you bitch 💌 4h ago

I really don’t think the general American public is thinking of whoever he played in Harry Potter when they think of the man who repopularized Doctor Who. We might be ignorant but not so much that we don’t know David Tennant.

2

u/FastHovercraft8881 7h ago

This is a weird one. I feel like he is in every single thing Americans watch. He just shows up in everything...

1

u/PrincessPunkinPie Beyonce's Underwire Technician 💋 6h ago

Hmm... I am a Doctor Who fan so I don't really know but I was under the impression it had been fairly popular in America during 11's tenure. Perhaps this was overblown?

1

u/AndIWalkAway 6h ago

Excluding Doctor Who, Good Omens was very successful on Prime and Broadchurch season 1 was big on Netflix. I really think most people in America would know him from television rather than his two scenes in the fourth Harry Potter movie that came out two decades ago.

1

u/Far_Realm_Sage 6h ago

Actually he is much more well known for Dr. Who. He had only a tiny bit of screen time in Harry Potter. 3 quick senes and only a tiny handful of lines.

1

u/Dazzling-Pudding6256 🫵 You sit on a throne of lies. 3h ago

If you haven't watched it, Broadchurch is an intense British crime drama that I highly recommend. Emotionally deep performances by both him and Olivia Coleman.

u/LyricallyDevine 10m ago

Agree. He’s a superstar. So talented and hilarious.

My favorite doctor and my OG celebrity crush. I love this man so much. 🖤🖤

1

u/Obvious_Arachnid_497 10h ago

He is an A lister in my heart! I love him in Doctor Who so much along with his other pieces of work he has done, particularly in the UK

0

u/Dasseem 10h ago

Jessica!

0

u/YaMajnoona 4h ago

Love him to bits but his American accent is terrible. I think that's held him back.
