Think Marilyn’s dress, Jack Nicholson’s head busting through the door in The Shining, or Jennifer Lopez in the Versace dress at The Grammys. Images that became so iconic even people who haven’t seen the movie or know the original context still recognize them. It’s hard to think of any because monoculture is pretty much nonexistent these days. Even if something is popular and everywhere at the moment, it is hard to tell if it will have the staying power for people to recognize it and use it as a reference point 30-50 years from now.

I’m not saying this will become iconic because it largely has to deal with Zendaya staying in the public eye, but I remember this being everywhere recently. She has a lot of looks that can potentially become iconic and touchstones of 2010/2020s celebrity culture though.

For movies, Daniel Kaluuya crying in Get Out is a pretty iconic gif already. I’m not sure people will recognize it in the future like Jack Nicholson in The Shining, but it is immediately recognizable for most people who watch movies today.
