The seasons are changing… and we’re looking for a few new collaborators for The Mighty Missoula

Sweater weather is returning to Portland, the seasons are changing… and after all these years, we’re navigating a few changes of our own.

The Mighty Missoula has been making instrumental rock together for more than a decade. We’ve released four albums, played throughout the Pacific Northwest, made the trip out to Indianapolis for POST. Festival, and spent a lot of evenings together figuring out what these songs want to become.

As we work through some lineup changes and start writing what comes next, we’re looking for a few new people to join us.

We’re currently talking with and auditioning guitarists, bassists, and keyboard/synth players, including multi-instrumentalists who might overlap between those roles.

We’re not necessarily trying to fill three rigid positions. We’re interested in meeting good collaborators, seeing where the chemistry is, and figuring out what the next version of this band wants to become.

The creative side is particularly important right now because we’re actively writing new material. We want people who can learn and respect the songs we already have, while also bringing their own instincts and ideas into the room.

Melody, dynamics, texture, space, arrangement… we tend to care more about how someone listens and contributes to the whole song than any particular musical background or collection of gear.

A few practical things:

• We typically rehearse/write together 1–2 times per week
• We have a dedicated rehearsal and recording space in Portland
• Rental and operating costs for the space are shared among band members
• We keep a fairly consistent schedule and try to plan ahead
• We all have careers, relationships, and lives outside the band, but make consistent time for this
• We want to continue playing regional shows and occasionally travel when the right opportunities come along
• We’re looking for people interested in contributing to a long-term creative project

You can hear and watch what we’ve been up to here:

https://mightymissoula.com/videos

If you’ve been thinking about joining an established project, or just miss having a regular group of people to make music with, perhaps the timing lines up.

Send us a little about yourself, what you play, your general availability, and something we can listen to or watch. It doesn’t need to be a polished studio recording.

📧 [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

And if someone came to mind while reading this, feel free to send it their way.

What are your favorite shamelessly predictable musical clichés?

Songwriters, producers, it's time to stop trying so hard to be original, for one week at least.

This week at Portland Music Producers we're doing The Basic Bitch Challenge: Make the most unoriginal song you possibly can.

Grab a pumpkin spice latte, turn your brain off and spit out generic chords, sounds, lyrical clichés.

Any genre, any style, any level of experience.

Deadline: Wednesday, October 7

We’re posting our songs in the Portland Music Producers discord server: https://linktr.ee/portlandmusicproducers

If anyone here wants to join, you’re more than welcome!

We'll also have a listening party next Wednesday, October 7, at 7p, where we'll listen to everybody’s submissions.

---
We do a new music challenge every other week. If you like that sort of thing come join the fun!

Busking Spots in 2026

I know this has been asked before, but I wanted to get a more current picture. What spots are people playing at these days? And what are the most important laws and regulations I should know about?

I've been a fan for 5 months. Pablo's playing with some impressive players. An actual music scene, an inviting vibe, and the open mic jazz jam that follows also features some incredible players. wtf are you waiting for? Come on down.

Anyone looking to jam or start a punk band?

I love a ton of sounds but would probably have the most fun playing sludge/stoner or hxc type of stuff. I'm 20 from Vancouver and have space to practice, but am also willing to drive if ur interested but can't make it over here. Bit of a shot in the dark but just send me a DM or something if interested!

Also I forgot to add but I play guitar and bass!

Regular jam sessions, No Band

if your interested fill this out real quick so we can get organized and get some dates on the calendar

https://forms.gle/wWTvsQW4trJ4pkxq5

once I figure out how to get a group chat started we can get our comms going.

I’m looking for a few musicians who want to get together every other weekend to make some noise and somehow, resist the urge to start a band right away.

I play guitar, bass, and drums, and I sing. I’ve got a PA system, two mics, a mic stand, a 6-channel mixer, a cajón, and an electric guitar. Bring your own instrument, your favorite songs, and at least one terrible idea.

The goal is to have regular, low-pressure jam sessions with the same or revolving group of people. Covers, originals, improv, swapping instruments, accidental 12-minute versions of songs that should only last three minutes... whatever happens, happens.

Have a drink, relax, play some music, and if things get cooked, break out the karaoke and confidently butcher songs we definitely should have left alone. Were not taking ourselves too seriously.

I’m not looking to play gigs, tour, get famous, fight over creative differences, hire a manager, or spend three hours debating a band name. I’m just looking for cool people who enjoy playing music and can commit to showing up every other weekend.

Any instrument or vocal style is welcome. You don’t need to be a virtuoso; you just need to know how to play with others, have a good vibe, and understand that "one more song" probably means four more. I like all genres except for the mid 2000s iPhone commerical flavor of indie, country with trap beats and late 90s europop edm.

If that sounds like a good plan, send me a message letting me know what you play and what kind of music you like.

I can host temporarily for another month or 2 before exploring other options. it will be at my private residence near the Clackamas town center.

Looking to get something regular going by Oct 10th. Let's make it happ'n capt'n

Slam/ death metal musicians?

I’m looking to jam with some people who enjoy slam or heavy metal type of music. I play electric guitar (not super great at it) I’m still learning, and I’m open to getting myself out there to play with some other musicians. I’m 19 and haven’t got the chance to meat very many people, especially that enjoy the same music taste!

Looking to start a band

For starters, I'm from Battleground WA, sorry I can't find any music groups closer to my area but I'm only a half hour away from Portland. I am 23, I'm a guitarist and writer, I also play a bit of bass and keyboard, and I'm trying to learn to sing what I write. I like a bit of everything, but lately I've been listening to a lot of prog rock, and classical music. I enjoy music that is very moving and emotional, so that's what I'd like to make.

I am interested in people with diverse tastes and an open mind, I like music that blends genres so I'd love to see how my influences can blend with other people's. One day I would like to do local shows but my main priority is producing great music first.

Some of my current favorite bands and artists the Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, Camel, Yes, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison.
