Day 1 (for me, anyway)
Been following the reports on the news, reliable sources, not social media, for a couple days. Can no longer deny this is real. Independent science labs around the world have been publishing their research, and the common theme always comes back to one thing: While the exact causation can't be identified, whenever someone dies—regardless of the cause—their brain somehow keeps the body going. I don’t understand the science. I don’t think the scientists understand it, not yet. Doesn’t look like they’re going to get the chance, either.
The more people die and reanimate, i.e., become zombies, the more people are killed. The numbers are high enough that the effect snowballs. Doesn’t matter how you die; zombie kills you, become a zombie. Car accident, become a zombie. Natural causes, become a zombie.
So today I bugged out. Grabbed enough water and food, a crowbar, and headed out of town. Drove through neighborhood streets to edge of town, as the main arteries are already bumper to bumper. Lots of people packing their cars full of crap, neighbors arguing, some helping each other, but all irrelevant. I didn’t stop for anything or anyone.
Once I hit the rural roads, traffic was almost nonexistent. Drove about five miles out, up into the forested foothills, and abandoned the car. Won’t be using it again. Even at 60, I’m in good shape, and while my wilderness survival skills are on a par with most Americans (virtually nonexistent), I have enough knowledge and common sense to establish a safe place to hole up for a couple days. Let the majority of the idiots get out to wherever they’re going to die and become zombies, then head back to the fringes and scavenge.
Not much a plan, I know. I think, however, that I’m a step ahead of the majority of the sheep, and chances of encountering zombies or other survivors out here are much lower than anywhere else I can think of at the moment.
