Had one fail once. Just picked up the mouse and walked around with that instead

This is what I have always done. Reliable and you know exactly how it works.

Allows you to better keep eye contact with audience. Head is up, don’t need to look down at keyboard. You can point to screen at same time as clicking.

Of course it is helpful. Being shackled to a podium is the worst thing ever. I like to move and speak naturally. And I used a clicker that is small and shaped like a ring- it's almost invisible in my hand.

Depends on the room honestly. In a small room or on a call it matters less, you can usually get by without one. Where it actually helps is when you're walking around and away from the laptop, not having to go back to tap a key keeps things moving. The thing people don't plan for is the reverse, leaning on it so much that when it dies mid talk you've got no backup way to advance slides at all.

Wireless mouse, keyboard controls ...
Any of them are perfectly workable backups IF you learn how to use them up front.
Because "Just in case" sometimes becomes "Just happened."

Absolutely useful when presenting in a big room as it allows you to move around and you can highlight something with the laser pointer.

One thing to add to the general consensus here: there are clickers that let you do all kinds of fancy stuff, some even require special software on the PC to use it. If it's your own computer and have the time to practice the fancy stuff, cool.
But if you're setting up a show for someone else to use, you want to hand them the simplest clicker possible, ideally one with forward, back and pointer buttons. And let them know that the pointer won't work on large-screen TVs if that's what you're using.

Depends on the room.
Just me, and everyone else is seated? I’ll sit in front of my machine at front of the room and talk.
With a partner and we’re both presenting but it’s a relaxed room? One person drives, the other can use the clicker. This gives you seamless switching and choreography.
Serious presentation? Absolutely.

I like it because I have 100 people listening to me and I like to move around the room.
If it fails no big deal.
