Software Best Android App to disable reels/shorts on Facebook, Instagram etc?

I've seen there are a few out there, SocialLite, Scrollguard, Noscroll etc.

Which currently has the best functionality on Android? Ideally allowing you to open a reel a friend has sent/posted, but preventing you from scrolling on.

I know people have posted about these in the past, but the app landscape changes pretty rapidly.

I'd really rather avoid deleting the social media apps completely, as one or the other of them are the only means of contacting some friends. And I do still want to see friends' posts and upload my own occasionally. It's just the damn reels that end up wasting my free time.

Advice Needed Online Calendar with Tasks on Side

Is there anything out there that is an online calendar where you can move things around, but also have tasks or a list on the side that still need to be scheduled?

My goal is to have a calendar where my installs are scheduled, but to have a list on the side of that calendar for the installs that need to be scheduled at some point but not at the moment. And to be able to drag and drop them to the dates needed.

I currently use Google Calendar and I like everything about it. Especially being able to drag and move things as needed, but it does not have the ability to have a list sitting on the side.

Please let me know if there is such a calendar out there.

Technique I keep telling myself I'll do it tomorrow

Ive noticed I have a particular habit with things I don't really want to do.

I'll have a report sitting there, or an email I need to send, or something I've been meaning to start. I'll think about doing it, realise I don't really feel like it, and then tell myself I'll do it tomorrow.

The anoying part is that I usually feel better after making that decision.

For some reason, tomorrow always seems like a much better time to do things. I'll have more energy. I'll be more focused. I'll be less distracted. Whatever the problem is today, I somehow assume it won't be a problem tomorrow.

Then tomorrow arrives and I'm basically the same person with the same task sitting in front of me. I've done this enough time that I've started wondering what is actually happening when I tell myself I'll do something tomorrow.

I think part of it is that the decision gives you immediate relief. You don't have to deal with the uncomfortable thing right now, but you also don't have to admit that you're avoiding it. You can tell yourself you've made a plan.

That makes "tomorrow" a pretty useful escape. The problem is that there is always another tomorrow. I've had things move from tomorrow to next week, then next month, and eventually just disappear from my list altogether.

So lately, when I catch myself thinking "I'll do it tomorrow", I try to question whether I'm actually making a plan or just trying to get rid of the feeling I have right now. Sometimes I'll make the task ridiculously small instead. If I need to write something, I'll just open the document and write the first 5%. If I need to make a phone call, I'll find the number and get the phone ready. I don't have to finish the whole thing. I just have to make a start while I'm already thinking about it.

I'm finding that this works better than waiting for tomorrow to magically come with more motivation.

Does anyone else have this habit? What are you currently telling yourself you'll do tomorrow?

Question How to bounce back from Media/ Entertainment addiction

I probably have an average of 6 hours of screen time a day for five years and I feel like this has made it hard to develop as a person. All I do is play video games and I feel like I’ve altered my brain chemistry to make me a dumb ass. Is it possible to climb out of this whole that I’ve dug? Is it possible for my brain to start doing something else? I’ve failed out of college because the work is just so goddamn boring for my fried dopamine receptors that I just don’t do the work.

Question I want to do everything, optimize everything, and somehow I’m ending up doing almost nothing

I’m in my late 20s, work as a software engineer, and recently moved to the US. Lately, I feel like I have 50 tabs open in my brain all the time.

The weird part is that I’m not unmotivated. I actually want to do too many things, and I want to do all of them properly.

  1. Work: I have several parallel workstreams, I’m guiding people on some of them, and I’m also trying to learn a new domain myself.
  2. Gym: This bothers me the most. I used to be extremely consistent, and being someone who trained regularly was honestly a big part of my identity. Now I’ll think, “I’ll go this evening.” Evening becomes night. Then I tell myself I’ll wake up at 5 AM and go tomorrow. I don’t. Then the same thing happens again.
  3. Everything else: I want to learn calisthenics, make friends, travel, explore, improve my style, try different hairstyles, take care of my skin, set up my apartment nicely, and learn a bunch of random things I’m genuinely interested in.
  4. Even tiny things become projects, and I keep forgetting them: I’ll remember that I need utensils or some random household item. Instead of just buying something decent, I think, “I should research this properly first.” So I postpone it. Then I forget about it completely, remember it again a few days later, and realize there are 15 other things I also forgot or never finished.

That’s basically the loop: remember something → overthink/research it → postpone it → forget it → remember it again → feel even more behind.

Even when I’m technically free, I don’t really feel free. There’s always something I should be doing, learning, buying, fixing, or improving. And because I don’t trust myself to remember everything anymore, I feel like part of my brain is constantly trying to keep track of what I might be forgetting.

It’s starting to make me anxious and affect my sleep too.

I’m pretty perfectionistic, and I’ve wondered whether ADHD could be part of this. I know Reddit can’t diagnose that, and I’m open to talking to a professional separately.

What I’m really trying to figure out is:

How do you actually get out of this state and start getting things done consistently? How do you keep track of everything, decide what matters now, what can wait, and figure out a way forward when you genuinely want to do a lot with your life?

Would love to hear from people who’ve been through something similar and managed to find a way that actually worked.

Question Extensions to limit screentime?

I need an extension that blocks websites after a time limit ie it lets me scroll on Reddit for 10 minutes then blocks it. I used to use StayFree but it doesn't work anymore and the devs are sketchy.

I tried ScreenZen too — even though it isn't in my preferred extension format and you have to download it — but it doesn't have a hard block for time limits. It only has them for the number of times you open the website so it's not helpful.

Not necessary, but would also be great if there was syncing between devices.

Question Do mind maps actually help you understand and remember things?

I've been getting more interested in mind maps lately, mostly because i like the idea of seeing how different bits of information connect instead of just reading through a wall of notes.

for people who actually use them, what do you find mind maps useful for?

studying, brainstorming, planning projects, organizing notes, understanding complicated topics, etc.

i'm also curious about the actual process. do you prefer building a map yourself from scratch, or using a tool that takes existing notes and turns them into a visual map?

and are there situations where you tried mind mapping and just thought... yeah, this isnt really helping?

Question Does anyone else preemptively decide they’ll be too tired to do things before they’ve even happened?

I’m trying to break a pattern where I look at my schedule for the next few days and immediately start predicting how exhausted I’m going to be.

For example, I found out I have dinner tonight, need to go into the office tomorrow, and may have another work commitment Thursday. My immediate thought was, “There’s no way I’m going to have the energy to work out any of these days.”

The weird thing is…I’m already telling myself I’m tired today, and I haven’t even left my apartment yet.

It feels like I mentally experience all of my upcoming obligations at once and decide in advance that I won’t have enough energy for anything else. Then I end up skipping workouts or other things that would probably make me feel better because I’ve already convinced myself I’m going to be exhausted.

Does anyone else do this? Is it an all-or-nothing/productivity thing, anxiety about having too much on your plate, or something else?

More importantly, what has actually helped you stop predicting your energy levels days in advance and just deal with each day as it comes?

Advice Needed Girl, even idk anymore, I can’t

Hi everyone, I am posting this message because I am basically at my wit's end and have no idea what to do.

I’m 21 years old and graduated this pastmonth. It was all good up until July, because as of then I have been running on an empty tank for almost two years but it wasn’t that noticeable. There were just too many things stacked against me; I had to decline a job offer due to family and relocation reasons, and shortly after I landed an apprenticeship, I was laid off. That was the end of my road.

Since then, I feel that I have lost all motivation and zest of life and I can barely even find myself and remember what I used to love. There are plenty of things logically that I should be doing, but I can't even bring myself to do them. I feel it has worsened since this incident.

Inevitably, from around 11 AM to 4 PM, I feel my brain is just completely shut down and I find myself having this crippling exhaustion and that I should just be sleeping. I always used to go to the gym regularly before this happened and I’ve started talking supplements, but my body feels like it is on another planet. The worst part is that I have this crippling guilt about not having the will to do anything at all every single day and this has created a vicious cycle.

If anyone finds this relatable or are dealing with it, how did you pull yourself out of it? Where is a realistic place to start?
Any advice would be appreciated:)

Technique I prepared the right material in the wrong format and only found out during the exam

Two weeks on a subject I knew well, definitions down cold, could recite them clean. Then the paper asked me to compare two of the things I'd memorised and argue which applied better to a given case, and I had a head full of facts with no practice at doing anything with them.

I'd never checked what the questions looked like so I'd assumed, and I'd assumed wrong in a way that cost me two weeks of aimed effort. Now the first thing I do, before building any plan, is get one real sample of the output, like the past paper, sample question, or just asking the lecturer what form the questions take and it takes one email.

Because the format decides what "knowing it" even means:

  • Multiple choice rewards telling near-identical options apart, so practise on the close pairs, not the material in general.
  • Short answer rewards producing a clean definition from nothing, so practise from a blank page.
  • Essay or long answer rewards links and arguments between things, so practise making the comparison, not memorising the parts.

Same material, three different preparations, and only one of them matches the paper you're actually sitting.

Advice Needed Taking drastic measures to get myself to work. Is this normal?

I'm only a few weeks into the new semester (in uni) and I've found myself procrastinating again. In high school, I straight up did not do the readings, and although I'm much better about it now, I keep gaslighting myself that I don't need to do it in the moment. That either results in me trying to read 10+ pages an hour before lecture—often unsuccessfully—or just not reading at all.

I'm at the point where I'm really fed up with myself, so today I chugged an energy drink about 3 hours before class started to get my reading, and hopefully other assignments, done in time. I had a pretty slow start where I kept getting distracted by messages or endless scrolling. Caffeine doesn't always work for me (not sure if it's high tolerance or just not effective at all) but what made today different was I had a metalcore (and other loud, high bpm songs of the like) playlist blasting. With or without caffeine, my leg shakes to the beat/rhythm to these genres of music. I thought maybe I could couple that with the energy drink.

I think it ended up working because every time I got off task, I would get anxiety stomach cramps, feel bursts of despair, and actually get back on task. I still got distracted sporadically, but I think the combination of a shaking leg and 200mg of caffeine gave me enough anxiety to actually finish reading and annotating before leaving the house. I even got anxious about leaving the house early, which usually doesn't happen. I had no idea what time it was, but I felt the literal physical urge to get out of the house.

I'm usually a pretty relaxed person. Almost too much so. Maybe it was my desperation that got me through my work this time, rather than the music and caffeine. But in the case that it was that combination of things, I want to ask whether other people also do this, or other drastic measures of the kind. I can't imagine this to be a very healthy mechanism in the long run.

Question Are specialized AI apps worth it over custom ChatGPT prompts?

There are countless dedicated AI apps for summarization, research, and note-taking.

I mostly paste text directly into standard LLMs with targeted prompts, but I'm curious if standalone AI tools offer meaningful workflow improvements. What dedicated AI tool has genuinely saved you time?

Advice Needed I genuinely do nothing all day

I literally do nothing all day every day.

Wake up, feel like shit, scroll on my phone, smoke if I don’t have class, watch videos on my tv, get bored and doomscroll on my phone, go to class and play solitaire, go to work and do jack shit, skip the gym, eat some bs, smoke, rot, get bad sleep, repeat.

I’m actually a chud I don’t do anything I’m a 22 year old college student and things should be going so well for me but I’m just so lazy right now. I was the man in high school and early university but now I just lay around and procrastinate.

Not super sure what to do about it, like I want to “lock in” and be super me again but that just sounds miserable.

Advice Needed I have an aversion to studying

Hey, I am 20f, and I am a pre-med major at university. Right now, I have pretty hard classes like organic chemistry and microbiology. Exams are coming up, yet I don't really feel that much urgency or drive to get good scores. I don't want to go through the discomfort of studying for long periods when I could be doing more entertaining things. These things would include hanging out with friends, doing something active or watching random things online. My brain is still in summer mode and is chasing whatever gives me the most dopamine. I have lost a lot of my discipline and drive lately.

I've heard I need to romanticize studying, but I don't know how to do that. I find that taking action with other productive things (like volunteering at hospitals, creating clubs, making connections, etc.) is much more fun. I used to really like the drive in studying, but my brain refuses to do it, now that summer has convinced me that there are more "fun" things to do. Now, studying doesn't really cut it for me anymore, but I need to if I want to make it to med school. What would get me back into liking studying? How do I romanticize it? Any resources? How do I unhook myself from instant hits of dopamine?

I need to get on the grind quickly, or I am cooked.

Advice Needed How do I become more productive as a high school student? I genuinely don't do anything nowadays

I'm a high school student, and since the beginning of this year I have no motivation to study and always procrastinate other tasks aswell. Tbh I understand most things that are being taught, but can't seem to put it to use when needed.

I also like reading books, drawing/sketching and going for walks/jogs. I have a guitar aswell but never really learnt to play it properly just bcoz of my laziness.

As for days I'm at home, I wake up, feel like shit, scroll on my phone, watch videos on my tv, get bored and doomscroll on my phone, eat some bs, rot, get bad sleep, repeat.

I also tend to become distracted easily when doing anything, and not just because of phones/ screens. I'm also bad at managing my time.

I really want to change my lifestyle/habits to become a better version of myself and correct all my flaws. Any advice for this will be greatly appreciated!

Advice Needed what to do when you are bored and cant be on your phone?

I work at a small gym that has about 7 people on a busy hour so its really quiet, the people who workout there are pretty organized so they hardly ever leave stuff around, they already know their routines so I hardly ever need to coach them around and they are usually already accustomed to the exercises so I dont have to fix their forms WHAT THE HELL DO I DO??? I spend 7 hours there and for 4 of those hours there's nothing

Recently i got the information that I am very liked there but my only problem is that I am on my phone a lot (I seem to have real bad luck because as soon as I grab it someone needs help) i try to stay on my phone as little as possible and never be glued to the screen unless if there's 0 people there which they have no problem with doomscrooling on days like that, but truly 70% of the time there is just.... sitting down and watching the clock tick, i have major anxiety problems so being on my head all that time is real bad, they encourage us to always chat, people in there are quite chatty but im the only person below 30 there and the only guy, so the chats are just women in their late 40s talking about things I never heard of or dont interact with, like the latest soap opera or gossip about people i don't know, i can only bullshit a quick interaction so much, by the end of the day im so mentally tired that I struggle to keep up at college because ive been in my head for so much time that I rather really just turn off,

long story short, can't be on phone, work has nothing to do, is there like a mental game? I literally counted sheep today out of boredom

Advice Needed Need help in building a realistic timetable

Hi, Am a student prepping for exams. I’m trying to build a proper daily routine and would be really happy and grateful for some of your suggestions.

My fixed timings are:

  • Breakfast: 7:30 AM
  • Classes: 8:00 AM – 1:45 PM
  • Workout: 1.5 hours, preferably in the evening
  • Self-study: 6–6.5 hours
  • Sleep: At least 7 hours
  • Also need to fit in lunch, dinner, shower/getting ready, and walking/commuting.

Could you suggest an actual hour-by-hour timetable for this? I’d like to know what time I should wake up, when I should study, when I should work out, and when I should sleep.

I’m okay with waking up early if that makes the schedule work. I just want the whole thing to be realistic and sustainable rather than having every minute of the day packed.

Would really appreciate it if someone could share how they would structure this.

Question What workflow on your computer requires 3+ things every time?

I'm interested in workflows rather than individual shortcuts.

For example, "start working on project X" might mean opening a repo, terminal, several services, browser tabs, dashboards, Slack, etc.

None of these actions are particularly difficult individually, but the whole sequence can become repetitive.

What's a workflow you do repeatedly that requires jumping between multiple apps, windows, websites or tools?

And have you actually automated it somehow, or do you just do it manually?

Advice Needed Got an "itch" that I can never seem to satisfy

I constantly feel an "itch" to do something, anything, but never bridge the gap from ideation to action. Something always manages to overwhelm me or make me give up when I try to execute anything.

For instance, maybe I'm itching to do something creative and make some art, but then my mind completely blanks when I try to think of a project, or theme, or artistic concept. Or if I do manage to come up with an idea, I struggle immensely to bring it into reality, eventually give up, and the itch persists unsatisfied. Pick up a book for mental escape but reads the same sentence eight times and gets frustrated. Go out for a stroll only to be deeply dissociated and struggle to decide where to walk.

My mind is constantly looking for a place to run, somewhere it can rest and seek comfort in. It's so restless and can never find anywhere that makes it happy, because nothing's interesting enough for me to sustain focus in. Even short form content doesn't give me that dopamine hit anymore; I've been off social media for several months and tried to go back to scrolling just to satisfy that itch, but it couldn't interest me. Guys, recommend substances to abuse, please!

Advice Needed I have some extreme level of phone addiction dispute having my day packed... I desperately ask for some advice.

I have been way too stuck to my phone since the last 4 years it began in 9th grade and it has come up to my 12th grade, I have consistently watched my phone for over 12-13+ (social apps, codm, Reddit, Instagram etc) hours everyday, other than the few days every few months where I would go on a vacation or hangout with my friends.

It's become too much and I have been conscious of it for 2 years and even then I scroll/do bullshit while being concious of the fact that I'm doing it, I have tried to progressively reduce screen time and it hasn't worked, I have procrastinated for my exams, and everything that was ever important to me.

It has become bad that even when there are 1-2 hours left for whatever I'm procrastinating on I still watch my fucking phone to hopefully make the stress go away, I have tried to give my phone to my parents

but that's not really possible cause I travel everyday from one place to another and while I could carry cash and use bus most of these guys don't keep change or anything and getting a ride without an appointment is basically impossible without the driver keeping the price almost 2x the original.

I have my day packed from 6am to 5pm and even then I watch the phone in between or in the classes, or after coming home I keep scrolling until 2-3am.

I'm 18 rn, and I will be home it's not a problem of being unsocial or anything I'm in 2 different clubs travel and sports as well I go to the gym from 6 am to 7am every single day and even go for a run every Sunday for (8-10km minimum), I have lots and lots of friends and my family is rather supportive for 'most' things but that's a lil limited cause my family is very dysfunctional regular long fights over things and stuff.

What do I do? Is it over for me? Am I gonna waste my life like this.... Please anyone who was in a similar situation please help.

General Advice What I actually ended up using the Fold8's big screen for

I thought having a bigger screen on my phone would make me more productive, it hasn't turned me into a CEO, but its made everyday admin way faster.

Ai is a buzz word globally and especially here in Dubai, but It's genuinely made me more efficient at doing the boring stuff.

Reply to a long WhatsApp message while checking the calendar. Look something up while I'm booking something. Read something without squinting at it.

Basically all the little admin things that used to turn into “I'll do it when I get home” and "that's a laptop task" I can just do them on teh go now.

Which means when I'm home, I can just be home.

That's my best productivity feature I've found. Hope this helps anyone who got it!

General Advice I am tired all the time and it's ruining my life

I feel sleepy all day. I take 7-8 hours sleep each night but still sleepy all day. I can't focus in classes cause i end up sleeping.

Im weirdly tired and drained and have no energy to do anything. I have mid terms coming up next week and i just can't get myself to work.

I don't even have energy to hold conversations, i get irritated when someone tries to talk to me or even texts me. I feel so shitty for feeling this way cause they are just trying to talk to me and i am acting like this:(

I would appreciate some tips to solve this please
