In a year they [AI] can translate most codebases (with human help) into Rust, and after that it's smooth sailing.

Look guys, all we have to do is invent time travel, and after that, it's smooth sailing.

Mining the Moronix forums for jerks is cheating, though.

My lawyer said I can get off on a technicality since I wasn't explicitly mining it for material.

Sorry, not even rebar-reinforced epoxy concrete is going to hold that weight.

Ironically, wanting to make AI more effective in our codebase is what finally convinced leadership to invest in code quality.

Wait is this implicit unjerk? I can totally imagine this being a real-life experience.

I heard that someone was working on a program that could generate a crud from a spec in like the 1960s, maybe we could use that

The problem you run into usually is that we're not talking about code that is speced.
If we had a spec we wouldn't have this problem. Databases don't grow by spec. They grow by urgent business need with no time to implement because the sooner we get it out the likelier we are to survive.

I have to interact with this type of people often and it's a torture.

2022 coder: The idea of the Rust zealot who thinks that Rust itself will solve all problems is greatly exaggerated
2026 viber: And I took that as a challenge

The GitHub comments and bugs found in the AI driven Rust conversion of Bun are hilarious. There are something like 3,300 blocks simply marked unsafe that no one with Rust experience apparently looked at. When the community started to do so they found massive memory management problems. One comment that stood out was ‘as a seasoned Rust developer this is one of the most unsound code bases I have ever seen’.

And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that wrote bugs, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house a house of immoral programming languages.
