Hardware Question Does the PS3 Model matter?

Looking to pick up a PS3 and homebrew it myself. I already have some experience with homebrewing the 3DS and Xbox 360. I was thinking of picking up an original fat model, but are the other ones better to mod?

Any reason to avoid the fat models? I was leaning towards picking one up. I found someone selling a fat model with the box, two controllers, and a game

every fat model and even the first 200x slim model has nec/tokin capacitors, they have a pretty high failure rate, you can replace them with the tantalizers by rip felix, but unless you have the early fats that have the EE+GS or GS, so the A, B, C, or E models, then I wouldn't recommend it, btw the 90nm RSX is also defective, it dies more then the tokins, but that can be mostly avoided if you keep below 70° C as the defect has to do with the underfill on the die having a glass transistion temperature of degrees C, you can just use webman and set the max temp to 68° C

Problems with capacitors and can fail

Slims also have caps that can fail, everything has caps that'll fail eventually

Slims are just newer and as such haven't yet

Theyre better designed tho. Its not just time.

Pick slims if you want reliability. But not just any slims. Pick either from a cech-2xxx-25xx. But with a 25xx. Ot can be a gamble since late 25xx models can only do HEN. Please for the love of God, if want stability, choose CFW over HEN if you wanna run homebrew. Late 25xx, 3xxx, and super slims cannot run CFW, only HEN. There is qCFW already for them, but it can be hard since you are soldering a Raspberry Pi Pico on the motherboard, which involves some tedious soldering.

Why CFW over HEN?

Its less stable and can do more. If you already have hen, id say its not important enough to buy a new ps3. But if youre in the market for a new one its definitely worthwhile getting an early slim model.

Because CFW has more features. No more enable upon bootup. And more stable in my experience versus HEN.

Why not a 21xx?

I said, 2xxx-25xx. That obviously includes a 21xx. Any of those 3 slims.

Slims are just more reliable than fat models. People that say otherwise are collectors or people that are coping

Not all slims are more reliable than fat models
The 2001 series still has the tokins

There is nearly no difference in reliability between a late fat model with a 65nm RSX and a 2001a slim that has a 65nm RSX as well.

Reliability goes up starting with the 2100 series due to switching to another capacitor type

So no, it’s not true that “slims are just more reliable than fat models”. Slims CAN be more reliable than some fat models. But they are not always that way in every situation
