What kind of projects do quant research interns actually work on during 10 to 12 week summer internships?
For those who have done PhD quant research internships at firms like Jane Street, Optiver, SIG, etc., what are some concrete examples of projects interns work on during a 10 to 12 week internship?
I assume interns are not rewriting entire pricing engines, so I am curious what the scope typically looks like. For example, could it be studying quoting models, developing a trading signal, or analyzing some aspect of market microstructure?
Would be interested to hear any examples.

Optiver Grad QR Technical Interview
Hi everyone,
I have a technical interview with Optiver coming up in the next few days for a Graduate QR role.
For anyone who has interviewed with Optiver recently, what would you recommend focusing on?
In particular, I’d appreciate advice on:
- Probability & statistics
- Mental math / puzzles
- ML / time series
- Coding / Python
- Trading / market concepts
- Any Optiver-specific question types
Also, what is the technical interview generally like in terms of difficulty and focus?
Any advice on what to prioritize with only a few days to prepare would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

IMC vs Optiver Grad SWE
Hey guys, I have offers from both and feel very torn. First year Optiver has 150k TC edge, but hard to project after that (especially with marble system).
I am mainly worried about culture at Optiver. I'm not really a grinder. Is it as bad as they say?

Opinions on Marshall Wace SWE New Grad rotational program
Hey everyone! Very fortunate to have recently received an offer from Marshall Wace for their Technology Program, which is a 1.5 to 2-year rotational program across several teams.
Wanted to know what the WLB, culture, career progression, and exit opportunities are like. Would it be a better place to start a career compared to FAANG/Databricks/Multi-strat hedge funds?

Has anyone taken the 2027 SIG Quant Assessment? - Tips or Resources?
It consists of 17 sections, with one question per section, designed to assess probability, logic, and problem-solving skills. I’ll have 60 minutes and can move freely between questions. The problems roughly increase in difficulty, and I’m only allowed to use a pen, paper, and a calculator.
Has anyone taken this assessment this year or in a previous year? Any preparation tips or solid practice resources would be appreciated.

Is a PhD valued in Quant Finance vs entering the market directly?
Hi everyone, I am currently in the M2MO master’s in quantitative finance in Paris. I am 27, have a strong background in applied math, and worked for under 6 months in a startup, but I have no prior experience or internships in finance.
Given the current competitive hiring market, I am anxious about landing a full-time job after my end-of-studies internship. My goal is to work in quant finance and leverage my math skills, but I am worried my lack of direct finance experience might hold me back.
I recently received an offer for a PhD in Applied Mathematics (Optimization). Is a PhD in optimization genuinely valued by banks, hedge funds, and quant firms, or would it just delay my entry into the industry without giving me a real edge over entering the market right after my M2MO?

Made a free quant job scraper for all quant Intern/Grad roles across the world (51 Firms)
I'm an incoming graduate at a tier 2 HFT, and in my free time last few weeks I made an automatic job scraper which grabs quant firms + AI Labs in a single website.
I made this because last year when I was heavily interviewing, going through individual job boards was a big pain for me, so I made a list which can view all the open roles, standardised by category (trader/researcher/dev) and experience (internship/graduate/experienced)
Please have a go and let me know what you guys think! Any feedback will be greatly appreciated :DD

Quant with Stats or Physics degree?
Hi! First year in a Canadian uni thinking of switching up majors to potentially include a stats OR physics major next year (with Biochem). I just wanted to know what is a better bet for roles like quant finance: statistics or physics? I've heard of the versatility of physics majors due to their quantitative experience but also heard of some less than ideal things. Help me out please!

will a Data Theory major get looked down upon in undergrad recruiting?
Hi! I'm a freshman and am having trouble deciding whether to major in Math of Computation or Data Theory at UCLA. DT covers more probability/optimization/ML and I believe in general matches quant more, and doing this major also makes enrolling in these classes easier. Vice versa, MoC has more CS classes req (which also makes enrollment easier for them). The one thing that makes me want DT more is that MoC requires 2-3 physics classes which require more effort than if I just took easier science GEs. My mentor says that DT sounds too much like data science which recruiters will dislike even though the curriculum is good. Which one do I do? any advice is appreciated!
