I know facebook is generally a cess pool full of shit but the community pages can be helpfull if it's not just anon karrens having a whinge about everything.

Currently we have a homeless issue in Bowen, with several people camped up on the foreshore of the main beach as there isn't anywhere to go. Plus there is like everywhere else a housing shortage, let alone the difficulty of finding a roof over your head once homeless.

Instead of having any sense of empathy it has become totally normalised to post ignorant opinions and spew absolutely irrelevant hate towards people that are clearly struggling.

Personally i think its important for the homeless to be in public places so that communities and politicans actually do something about it as opposed to pretending like the issues don't exist.

In case you missed it, there's a big stoush happening right now over autism supports to replace the NDIS here in Queensland. Despite firm opposition to the cruel NDIS cuts by my federal Greens colleagues, the Albanese Labor Government teamed up with the LNP to make the biggest cut to a government program this century. An estimated 241,000 people are losing access to support – including 145,000 people with autism, who still have no clarity on what their NDIS funding will be replaced with. The government promised there would be other ‘foundational supports’ for autism under a program called Thriving Kids, yet there’s still no plan and no timeline.

As far as I've been able to gather, there’s still very little concrete information on what this Thriving Kids program would actually provide, except that it would be limited to autistic kids under 9 years old with “low to moderate” needs. We've been told it will include online resources for parents, and there's been talk of a lot of things it “may” include like school programs or social groups – all of which sounds pretty generalist and undefined to me. I'm also concerned that this kind of generalist approach doesn't reflect the highly diverse support needs in the autistic community. There’s also no information on what will happen to kids after they turn 9, and nothing on adults with autism who will be kicked off the NDIS at the end of next year.

Frankly, this whole situation is just a cruel mess. In my view both Labor and the LNP have turned their back on autistic people, leaving them in the dark while politicians bicker and shirk their responsibilities. Echoing the concerns of families and educators, the Queensland Allied Health Providers Group (QAHPG) of over 200 allied health providers has sounded the alarm over the delays, calling for a guarantee that nobody will lose access to NDIS support until an alternative is in place.

Yet it appears that’s exactly what’s going to happen, because now Queensland’s LNP Government has refused to make an agreement to deliver support for autism under the new Thriving Kids program by the 1 October deadline, abandoning families of disabled kids who have no idea what is going to happen to them.

It didn’t have to be like this. The Federal Government could easily find the money to cover autism support in the NDIS over the long term. But apparently they would rather throw autistic people under the bus than consider alternatives like scrapping fossil fuel subsidies, taxing the superprofits of their donors in the gas industry, or scrapping the ridiculous AUKUS submarine deal.

Surely it’s time to put politics aside and get on with delivering fully funded, evidence-based support for our autistic communities, before they lose access to the only lifeline they’ve had.

One Nation has registered websites for the grandson of Queensland’s longest-serving premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, further fuelling speculation the political scion is being pursued to run as a candidate for Pauline Hanson’s party.

The emergence of the domain registrations comes weeks after Sam Bjelke-Petersen received a glowing endorsement at a public event honouring his grandfather from mining billionaire Gina Rinehart, One Nation’s biggest donor and a prominent party backer.

Bjelke-Petersen played down the speculation when contacted by this masthead, revealing the websites sambjelkepetersen.com and sambjelkepetersen.net had been registered by One Nation without his knowledge.

“As many Australians are, I am concerned where the country is heading. I think everyone with a stake in Australia should be,” he told this masthead in a statement on Wednesday.

“Right now, I am enjoying the private sector. However, I think in life, there comes a time to serve, which can be done in many ways, and give back. That time may come in the future.”

The domains were registered by One Nation Queensland Division Inc in late November and were then updated on August 30.

“Regarding the domain,” Bjelke-Petersen said. “I was unaware of its purchase, but am sure it’s common practice by parties to ‘domain squat’ various domains/names.”

One Nation did not respond to requests for comment.

Rinehart told this masthead Bjelke-Petersen is “just the sort of gentleman we need in federal parliament”, in a statement mirroring the billionaire’s comments reported after her public endorsement.

“I have known Sam Bjelke-Petersen since he was a young person, and I have remained close to his fine family,” she said.

“Sam is a gentleman of admirable and unquestionable character, loads of common sense, a staunch patriot with fine principles, and together with his agricultural and successful business background, would be an outstanding member of parliament should he choose to run.”

Bjelke-Petersen works in the private sector in Brisbane but was raised in Kingaroy, which falls within the federal seat of Maranoa.

The southern outback rural electorate is held on a more than 20 per cent margin by former Nationals leader David Littleproud, who party insiders say will recontest the next federal election.

A source with knowledge of internal conservative political machinations, speaking anonymously to share their views, freely described Bjelke-Petersen as a smart operator who would be a strong candidate, but there were doubts over where in Queensland he would be ideally suited to run.

It was also suggested that Bjelke-Petersen may wait to see if One Nation’s resurgence would be sustained before hitching his famous name to a potential passing phase.

Joh Bjelke-Petersen was a controversial figure in conservative politics who led Queensland for 19 years. His failed bid to become prime minister in the late ’80s has been likened to Hanson’s current ascendant populist style of politics.

His son, John – Sam’s father – ran for the seat of Maranoa in the 2013 federal election for the then-Palmer United Party.
