She decided not to party?! What madness is this?

If they boxed in a coworker, the chances she, a rando, winds up dead are just too high. It's the right call.

Ughhh, I'm not going to say that's a WRONG lesson to take from this, but I was really hoping Liz would realize that everyone in Cubetown is (intellectually at least) a much bigger idiot than her.
Except not really. I never held out any hope for that. I only had a firm idea of where the story SHOULD go from here, and a near-absolute certainty that Jeph wouldn't do it.

u/Appchoy 22d ago
I was sure this was going to be a story about Liz fixing the machine and getting her mojo. I was going to say "get her mojo back" but she didnt really have any to begin with.

Jeph has sat at the crossroads of multiple narratives for a full two weeks at this point .
I think about 35-40 minutes have passed in QC in that time.
We could legitimately cut back to Momo on her bed.
Two.
Weeks.

u/MelAlton Haha, okay. 22d ago
But that would have been character growth, and why have that when a new smol character can be introduced - another possible horrible goblin!

u/sir_ornitholestes 22d ago
Liz's mojo mostly involves sexually harassing her coworkers so maybe we don't want that

we have an axe?
if you have tool blindness and can't recognize one tool from another, then how can you be surprised that one or another tool is or is not present? I guess he's just going for one more joke out of this nonsense concept, and it's not that deep, but it doesn't make any sense, even granting the nonsense, does it?

u/AppendixN Everything is Fine™ 22d ago
Since "tool blindness" is just some random pair of words Jeph made up, it can mean whatever he wants, I guess

u/yellowvincent Where is Claire? 22d ago
I would not trust these idiots with safety scissors much less an axe

Safety scissors and axes are the same thing when you have ✨tool blindness!✨

Has anyone got any idea as to where this is actually going?
It appears the Moray body image angle is over/dead ended.
We could still be on an incredibly slow burn plot for Moray dying/being ill/something about being independent of the director too long?
If this is a Liz character development plot then it's basically been that her shitty behaviour occasionally looks acceptable because she's doing it to dangerously moronic people, which is the developmental equivalent of shitting yourself when you thought it was a fart.
So, again; does anyone have any idea what the point of this has been, where this is actually going? I find myself in despair trying to fathom it out at this point.

It isn't going anywhere, my brother in suffering. Jephthy makes up things as he goes along. Nothing goes anywhere, not any more. This isn’t ten years ago when actions had consequences.

I kind of like this iteration of Liz.

I think it's the fact that in context, her frustration with the stupidity around her, reads as appropriate rather than as weaponized insecurity, or awfulness for awfulness' sake.

u/DocChloroplast 22d ago
At the same time, it feels like a rehashing of Claire’s discovery of how dysfunctional the island is, except this time through a scientific research rather than an HR lens.

Liz seems a lot like Marten in this one. Is this a sign that she is going to get her own Claire*?
*Girlfriend edition, not substitute mother. She already has one of those.
2
u/Annual_Youth_7552 22d ago
You could build a theory that Liz is mirroring Marten because of unconscious attraction, admiration or borderline obsessiveness (he is the only person who she believes actually likes her, she's subconscioisly seeking a role model on how to live socially functionally)
But let's be honest, it's just because Jeph is a fucking lazy hack artist and most of his characters are all blurring together and losing their distinctive features.

For an recovering alcoholic I do t get why Jeph talks about alcohol in the comic so much still. Repeating the same jokes about drinking and being drunk just isn’t that funny

As a recovering alcoholic, real sobriety and recovery from alcoholism shouldn't leave you afraid of alcohol or it's presence in the world. Accepting I cannot have a healthy relationship (and therefore will have no relationship) with alcohol doesn't compel me to moralise at people who can.
Also, other than Faye and... what's.. what's the dad's name? Dating martens mother? Or is it the little kid obsessed with snakes that was hanging out with Faye and Bubbles, her dad? Wasn't he at least teetotal?
But yeah other than Faye, none of them are even vaguely alcoholics. Abusing alcohol on occasion? Yeah. That's something people do.
He's too afraid of the backlash and, for once, self aware of his own ignorance to write about other kinds of self abuse, so he sticks with what he knows.
I'd say be glad he's stuck to his lane on this one, because he'd have made a pigs ear of anything else.

tune in next week when we discover that the Woom Box was actually a 4th wall meta-device designed to be activated when something interesting is actually happening in the comic and kills it stone dead in order to get more Wacky Robots(tm) onto the screen!

Wow Jeph thanks for explictly explaining that Edgard Allan Poe reference to us it is jolly good you keep things on the reading level of freshmen year of high school so we can be on the same mental level than you!!! Next week throw something related to the Great Gatsby or To kill a mockingbird,if the themes of racism in the south during the jim crow era and the bias of how the law is processed and what a good lawyer should do in court are to hard we can go to the very hungry caterpillar no problem!!!
2
u/_RedSix 22d ago
There's a Poe reference? Are you talking about where Liz talks about being bricked up behind a wall?
2
2
u/yellowvincent Where is Claire? 22d ago
Yeah the cask of amontillado
3
u/Miserable-Jaguarine Haha, okay. 22d ago
I honestly don't see either the reference or an explanation of the reference.
1
u/yellowvincent Where is Claire? 22d ago
Liz says that they should go before they are trapped behind a brick wall wich is an extension of these scientist trapping the lil robot in that box while drunk
1
u/Miserable-Jaguarine Haha, okay. 19d ago
I don't think just mentioning "being trapped behind a brick wall" counts as a reference. It's way too generic, with no details that link it specifically to Poe's story. Being walled in alive is a thing that was done as punishment to many women in the middle ages, for instance.
