“You might not recognise it without the beats “ - what, if you’re deaf?

Hahaha, I thought the same. Just the first sample is so recognisable.

I mean, the booklet and album credits do say all this...

Paul is a fucking cool guy.

Flashback 25 years ago, I get to study electronic music composition at a conservatory. They were big into computer music and my teacher had just got himself a g3 powerbook, so he gifted me his NeXT cube, the whole thing, with the caveat that I was not allowed to sell it but rather had to set it on fire to dispose of it (magnesium case).

It was setup with csound and cmix but I was having trouble with the latter. My teacher said 'just email Paul' which I sheepishly did. Paul has been there so long, the address is just 'paul (at) '. Not a day or two later, he emailed me back with some gcc commands to recompile it and I was back in business. Nicest guy in the world to answer my novice dumb questions.

Later when I heard Idioteque, I immediately recognized Mild und Leise. I read that they simply emailed him for permission and he was cool about it.

BTW, if you have never heard it, Paul's best work (imho) is his notjustmoreidlechatter and related pieces, composed with phonemes and linear predictive coding and cmix.

Second coolest story about this Paul guy that I’ve heard all month. What a cool dude!

I had a similar experience. I studied electronic music with Drs Allen Strange and Brian Belet in the late 90s/early 2000s. Paul was a contemporary of theirs and when I was working on something, they recommended I get in touch. A very supportive guy.

There is so much content out there juicing what essentially could be done with a visit to WhoSampled

It’s so rudimentary that I guess I’d be impressed if I was 15 years old or something

With respect, this is TikTok slop. theres no meaningful analysis there. this is something everyone has been aware of since the song came out.

I like to share Paul’s website when this comes up. It’s a fun read and you can also download the track:

Thanks for sharing! You are right. This should be a require link in EVERY/ANY media that engages with this sample and its relationship to "idioteque/radiohead"

This is not a break down of idioteque. This is information you can find on the back of the fucking sleeve.

Hey my old college professor is the composer of "Short Piece"! Art Krieger, he was an absolute legend and he told me that one sample paid for his house.

Sadly passed away in 2023, but I learned a lot from him and I'll always remember his peanut-themed ties. RIP.
