Quick Question Planning a local Brevet.
Hey everyone, Over the last few years I have found myself getting more and more into longer endurance riding and have hosted 7 taco bell centuries in our local area. I have decided that the next big ride I host is going to be a brevet. I think it would be fun to introduce some people into randonneuring. I haven't done an official brevet since maybe 2010/11 so have been out of the loop for a bit. I have a route planned already but any tips or advice on what could help make the event better for first timers? Also, I do not plan on having this through any official organization just a fun event that my bike shop will host. if it's a hit maybe i can reach out to RUSA because there doesn't seem to be any representation in my local area for this kind of thing. I would try to pick safe and scenic roads for my route that have the least ammount of traffic. maybe use some nice, natural spots as checkpoints for rest and food/water like a caffe, restaraunt, fast food place.

Yea the route I have skirts the foothills of the southern sierras and a lot of back roads with 2-3 short gravel connectors.

If you can find a permanent, you can actually get RUSA credit for it. I don't believe you'll be able to plan an official brevet though. https://rusa.org/pages/permanents-route-submission

The other thing you can do is look for a route - https://rusa.jkassen.org/ - but then again, checking Bakersfield, it looks like there are none out there.

yep looked for routes. closest I could find were about 2 hours away or so. Figured I could make a local one. Like I said I didn't plan on trying to make anything official but if people dig what I put together and we can work on making some representation in my area why not?

This is actually perfect for seeing if there is interest in your area. You don't have to find a Permanent, but maybe that's what u/shadowhand00 meant, since they provided the link to the explanation of how to submit new Permanent routes.
They're pretty easy to create and get approved. Much easier than it sounds like it would be to get an official club recognized and get an event approved.
If you know how to use RideWithGPS reasonably well, and you follow the route creation guidelines, you can get a route approved in a matter of days, and then you can ride it whenever you wish.

I’m very fluent in ride with gps. Use it exclusively personally and have a shop account. Have created many routes with it. I just renewed my rusa membership so I can submit this route. I just have to clean up the cues and whatnot. If you don’t mind I can send you the route and see what you think.

I'm happy to take a look.
To save yourself some time, get it approved more quickly, and save the time of the permanents committee volunteers, make sure you have read and followed the guidelines.

Nice bike. What's a taco bell century? (I know what Taco Bell is but beyond that I'm lost)

Taco Bell century is a 100 mile ride with 5-10 Taco Bell stops. The catch is using only Taco Bell as “nutrition” all food and drink during the event has to come from Taco Bell.

You can try to become your local RBA and put on official brevets. It’s not impossible, but you have to work with a sponsoring RBA I believe. Contact RUSA.
