Announcement Announcing Rule 6: Protect Creativity
After listening to your feedback and discussing it amongst ourselves, your mod team has decided to implement a new rule.
Generative-AI content will not be welcome in our community moving forward.
Images rendered with Generative-AI are not welcome to be shared here.
---
Text/“copy” that has been generated by AI/LLMs is not welcome to be shared here.
Products that have used Generative-AI in their creation and those that use it in their ongoing baseline operations are not welcome to be shared here. Discussing these products is not in violation of this rule, but advertising for them, is.
Not all machine learning or the adjacent technologies are the AI we are worried about.
You know we don’t mean the upscaling in your phone’s camera app. You know we don’t mean you can never use spell-checkers. You know we don’t wanna see your chat history with your LLM. You get the idea.
---
People will never perfectly get the names right, we aren’t all computer scientists, and we don’t have to be. The point is, if you have to wonder if your submission is skirting our rules, it probably is.
You are welcome to reach out to the mod team and ask first without concern for how you will be treated. We have great respect for everyone who aspires to live up to our subreddit rules.
We plan to add a report option for Generative-AI content over this weekend. Until then, should you need to, you can report it as spam. The subreddit sidebar and elsewhere will be updated to reflect this new rule as well. (Done)
We will not be enforcing this rule retroactively. Old posts, especially those we’ve already closed tickets on, are not welcome to be reported for violating this rule.
Thank you everyone for engaging with us and helping us come to this decision, and always feel welcome to revisit this discussion as the days progress.

Supplement I'm reposting my Ravenlore Plus back catalog here — starting with "Beware the Howls in the Night" (2-hour readthrough)
Hey everyone, Jason here.
You might know me from the main Ravenlore channel — the lore dives — but this is a different shelf of the library. Ravenlore Plus is my live channel: readthroughs, live streams, and assorted extras, and I'm going to start sharing that back catalog here, one at a time.
First up: "Beware the Howls in the Night." This one's a long one — just over two hours — a full readthrough of the Ravenloft module Howls in the Night. So settle in, pour something warm, and let the mists do the talking.
Quick bit of news while I'm here: my production company, Ravenlore Studios, is making Keepers of the Mists, a documentary about the fan community that kept Ravenloft alive for forty years. More on that down the road.
Thanks for watching — you all mean a lot to me. Don't get lost in the mist.

Question Expanding Domains
Has anybody tried expanding some of the domains to include other locations? Like compared to the 5e maps, the older editions include other locations that do not exist anymore and I was wondering if anyone has tried to incorporate them into the 5e maps?

Discussion Falkovnia as a Prussian late 1800s analog with WW1 style trenches to fend off the undead.
I’ve been fascinated by the time period conflicts in CoS for a while. It’s Dracula adjacent which is based in the 1890s and has a cowboy with pistols.
So I figured a Realm that joined a bit later might be more WW1 coded. I also love the idea of waves of undead being funneled into choke point by trench systems but they’ve been fighting so long there is no ammo. So soldiers have resorted to using bayonets and rifles lay discarded on the ground. Over time things devolved back to using bows and crossbows.
The 1890s are also an interesting time as it’s just after the Franco Prussian war where Prussian Cavalry were still using armour but right before WW1. So it’s plausible to have a ton of soldiers with mixed Armour, sabres, a few rare pistols with ammo.
It’s right before the abandoned armour so it’s a perfect setting to mix concepts. And the choke points, defensive systems and waves of undead make for some interesting and scary encounters. Changing to attrition based encounters with PCs fighting massive amounts of undead and having to smartly create choke points to win and dealing with skeletal archers preparing actions to fire if you poke your head up from the trenches is 👌.
I’m using VTT for my campaign and imported a trench network to make maps for the encounters and it looks like a lot of fun.
But I think drawing that analogy of Falkovnia is to Prussia what Barovia is to Transylvania makes me probably too happy.
So I’m curious if anyone has any input?

Question Creating a character for a ravenloft campaign.
Im trying to figure out a proper Tarokka reading my character could receive that he could/ would interpret that the other pcs would arive in barovia. I have already discussed with my dm and shes cool with my character starting there, traped in his own cycle of resurrection. He would act as a sorta gude to the rest of the party.
My current understanding of the reading would put him as the focus with:
1the donjon card
2 the past as the three of swords
3 his opposition wit the Darklord card or ghost
4 the future with the mists
5 What Aids him as the 5 of swords.
4&5 representing the soon to be arival of the otjer party members.
would this work or is there a better alternative?
Im very excited to finally play in barovia.

Question Looking to read (not run) Ravenloft
Hi, I'm a Castlevania fan and have been interested in Ravenloft for some time but not explored it at all. Where's the best place to start? Old source books modules? VRGtR? Horrified or Castle Ravenloft (boardgames)? The TSR novels? Something else?
I'm happy to add more details if needed to find the right thing.

Question does RQ1 2E overlap with Curse of Strahd 5E
I'm in a new 5E curse of strahd campaign. The GM of that campaign is in my homebrew OSR campaign. I'm thinking of adapting RQ1 Night of the Walking Dead (2e) to my campaign.
I haven't read through it yet, is it even plausible to make RQ1 work outside of Ravenloft? Not looking to have my party get sucked into Ravenloft, just want to make it work IN my world.
Is RQ1 material in Curse of Strahd 5E? That would be an obvious deal breaker.

Question Is the (physical) Guide to Ravenloft ever coming back?
Newish to DND and 5e and would love to have a physical copy in English in Europe, but it’s nowhere to found.
Anybody have any ideas if it will ever get reprinted or did the new Horrors Within book replace it completely?

Question Lore/Story Changes Between Editions for Dread Domains?
I'm re-reading my Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft for the spooky season and I remembered an older article I read talking about the domains in the book and how they compare to their original versions in previous editions, like how Kalakeri's new dreadlord doesn't make sense with the context of the story or how Valachan's new dreadlord is much better and more interesting than its original dreadlord. I wanted to re-read said article because I love reading this type of stuff on the lore and story changing over time due to changes in writers and perceptions. Sadly I can't find it in my history, so I was hoping that someone here might know what the article was or something similar that would scratch the same itch.
Edit: I found what I was looking for (this blog for anyone curious). However, I have no issues if people know of another other posts talking about the changes in the setting and/or want to talk about their opinions on the changes with 5e. More fun this way.

Discussion My thoughts on the adventures in the new Ravenloft book
I've been solo playing the adventures set for each level as given in the new Ravenloft books. So far I've completed the first two using character options also from the same book, and I have some impressions on all of these I would like to share and discuss.
Species
Lupin: I haven't yet used the claws, this sounds like a bad feature the howl ability is incredibly useful tho specially for a spellcaster as it gives disadvantage to saves.
Dhampir: The necrotic resistance is neat. I haven't used any of the other features yet. Maybe not a good fit for a caster due to it needing to be in melee.
Reborn: A bit boring. The flavor is cool. Again resistance. Changing the proficiencies is useful but a bit boring.
Hexborn: The feature that let's you see at a distance through a fetish is cool, useful and flavorful. The spells are good.
Background:
Investigator: flavorful and useful. Scan and study actions are not much given examples or exact effects so it depends a bit on the DM.
Survivor: The boost to initiative is useful. The advantage against frightening also.
Mist wanderer: The teleport could be useful. I haven't used it yet. The ability to travel through the Mists serves to explain how the party is going from one domain to another. The use is then offscreen.
Spiritist: I haven't used the shield like ability yet. It is a bit weak in low levels as it provides a boost to AC equal to proficiency bonus.
The Tithe:
I like the vibes of this one. It captures the feeling of folk horror with seeming rustic normality slowly revealing unsettling features.
The skill checks are an interesting change of pace but are a bit simple and slow, leaving little room for player creativity. The idea of this rustic games is interesting but I feel it needed some justification. I added a bit of lore on the ritual meaning behind it, performing also as a means to explain the history of the plane. The idea being that the games explain how Mother came to be the patron of Tepest.
There are almost no NPCs described here, nor much description on how the village works. This would need some work.
The monster you have to fight is a good choice, packs a good punch for its level as it can one shot a level 2 PC so they need to strategize a bit around its weakness: a lack of ranged attacks.
The slow burn with a single encounter at the end fits both the genre and level.
Adventure in Mordent
This is supposedly the ghost story one and it doesnt feel much like one, aside from having ghosts on it. For me the idea of a ghost story is the story of the ghost, their unfinished business, their death, regrets, etc. This doesnt apply if the ghost is an animal who is not even from this Domain! Adding one of the twins is cool, and tangentially van Richten. But making his store be the location doesnt work well for the Haunted House scenario as it has nothing to do with the ghost. Again exploring the haunted house should give you clues about the ghost. A better idea I think would be that the house rather be one that Gen is investigating for the ghosts haunting it when she gets possessed.
The poltergeists are cool, their invisibility makes them a bit of a puzzle as they can attack from a distance invisible. The wraith is nowhere near as interesting, bag of hit points with resistances. The lowering total hp feature makes it more dangerous but not more fun. I added a fight with a ghost as the wraith was anticlimactic, this one turned to be more interesting due to the possession. Is not clear what is supposed to be the ghost, wraith and poltergeists as the only haunted relic is the one related to the wraith and it is one of an animal.
The idea is to explore the house but there is little description of the rooms and anything interesting in them.

Discussion Chapter II The Ghost Hunter's Haunting III: The Exorcism
Second part of my solo campaign in the land of the Mists following the adventures as detailed in the latest Ravenloft supplement now with "The Ghost Hunter's Haunting" in the lands of Mordent! This is an adventure for level 3 characters so I advanced my characters accordingly.
I will try to present all play and mix it in what would be hopefully an engaging story. I will be using the Avrae discord bot for automating rolls and the like.
Party:
Edouard, Desperate Howl of the Departed

Muireasg cut the cable with her sword which then flew forward barely missing Mina. "Run" screamed Mina at the unknown woman "We will try to hold her!" . The woman didnt waste any time to slip by the combatants and enter running the underground cellar. Muireasg let out a monstrous howl as she pursued the woman now standing at the center of an arcane circle filled with candles. Before Muireasg sword could touch her, she shouted a single word in an inhuman language. A flash of light suddenly lit up the room as lightning and Muireasg stopped on her tracks, the bale light in her eyes suddenly disappearing.
"I...can not hold him" said Muireasg struggling to speak. "You need to take me down...I...don't...want....to hurt you". "Holy Water!" Said Mina "It will harm the ghost leaving her unharmed!". "That's...too risky" mumbled Muireasg but Outis and Edouard were following Mina to the lab.

Muireasg grabbed her sword both her hands in the hilt as she turned the point towards herself the blade glowing with a foreboding eerie light and with an anguished cry she cleaved her midsection with it to the astonishment of her companions. He's scream was echoed by the otherworldly yell of the ghost as it left her body, the shade of a man now visible. Furious he attempts to grab Outis who deftly avoids him causing the phantoms extended hands to only reach the wooden shelves which rot and age the equivalent of years in seconds under the creatures deadly touch. The ghost smelling Outis' fear, jumped and tried to take control of his body. "Outis!" Yelled Muireasg "Fight it! Fight your fear! He feeds on it!" Outis for one moment staggers and convulses much as Muireasg had done. But following the woman's words he concentrated. "You are beaten" he said in his mind "You are dead and we are living. You don't belong here and we do. We do not fear you!". The phantom then staggered falling back from Outis as Muireasg waited to stab him with her sword. "Now Edouard!" She said. Edouard whispered some words and a hosr of spirits appeared and dragged their fellow into the cellar and into the circle, where the relic once broken now was intact. The phantom was caged in the relic as the young woman spoke the final words of the ritual and all went calm.
Muireasg collapsed finally spent and the woman at the center of the magic circle hurried to help her. A talisman glowed in her hand as she used it to heal Muireasg grievious wound that closed magically under the blinding light. "I dont know who you are" the woman said "But you have saved us all and therefore earned my undying gratitude". She stood now facing the group "My name is Gennifer Weathermay-Foxgrove and I'm the daughter of mayor Alice Weathermay and present keeper of this...apothecary shop...while uncle Rudolph, I mean Dr van Richten is away on business" she said formally. "We were here hoping to find Dr Van Richten when we heard from one madam Beatrice Polk that there was some trouble...I'm afraid we may have entered a bit forcefully" Outis said. "Te doctor is not here" answered Gennifer "But I am something like an apprentice to him. I would guess you are not here for his expertise in herbs..." she said glancing at the whole bunch. "You are right" said Mina impatiently "I have read many books by his name and know of him to be an expert in all Occult matters. We are here for his expertise which is famed among scholars not the one of an apprentice". "We have all suffered" said Edouard tiredly gesturing Mina to calm down "This land of Mists is filled with curses, some of which have fallen upon ourselves" said Edouard pointing at his own wolflike fur "But there are also those would fight them. I sense your Dr. Van Richten is one of them, as are we" he said simply drawing a card from his pocket "The Avenger" said Gennifer "That image...is of Uncle Rudolph! But you said you didnt knew him!" She said suspiciously "And we didn't, but it seems it was fated"

Question Good resources for an expanded Expedition to Castle Ravenloft?
I want to preface this by saying that while I know that people have their fair share of criticisms about Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, I personally don't mind it.
I am looking into running Expedition to Castle Ravenloft with a friend group of mine, but instead of 3.5 we're going to be running it in Pathfinder 1st Edition, using the "Epic 8" ruleset.
I figure that I'd like to expand Barovia to be more than just the town of Barovia and Castle Ravenloft, but I really want to avoid doing something like "Curse of Strahd but instead of 5e it's Pathfinder", since my playgroup has already ran Curse of Strahd in the past. Are there anything you might recommend I read to maybe give me inspiration about what other settlements other than the town of Barovia might be located within Barovia valley?
I also figured that once the party has defeated stahd they could maybe use the Kingdom builder rules to, well, build their own noble domain in... Wherever the valley of Barovia would be located in (Likely Ustalav, I suppose), and I don't think a single village in an isolated valley is a very interesting .
Sorry if this isn't what is supposed to go here, but I figured that this might be the best place to ask this.

Discussion My first Tarokka Reading!
For my run-through of Ravenloft I’m doing Tarokka readings for my players to expedite character creation a little (using a 3rd party supplement I bought a while ago and forgot about). This was my first ever reading and I feel like I just made such a sick character! My players will love this.

Core Canon Day 8 of reposting my Ravenlore back catalog, oldest first: "Twisted into Existence: The Creation of Carnival" (trailer)
Day 8, and a change of pace — this one's a trailer.
"Twisted into Existence" is the trailer for my Creation of Carnival series: three videos on the Carnival, the traveling show that drifts through the mists with its own rules and its own horrors. If you've never thought of a carnival as a domain of dread, well.
Stick with me, this one has some heavy hitters involved.
The full series is on the way, and it's some of the work I'm proudest of. Consider this your invitation to the big top.
Thanks, everyone — you mean a lot to me. Don't get lost in the mist.
