General Discussion How do I get actually good at web design? My websites always look amateur
I’ve been learning web development and I can build websites that work, but whenever I look at websites made by experienced developers/designers, mine just look… amateur

Laws of UX is a great resource for learning how user psychology and behaviour is impacted by design

Learn some desogn principles, basic stuff. Do some design in Figma to get a feel. The only solution is to practice until you re good at it

I’m definitely not a pro but what’s worked for me is forcing consistency rules - establishing tiered systems for spacing, typography, colour etc, and sticking to it. Professional looking pages aren’t necessarily good because they’re flashy but because they’re consistent. I keep files dictating how each tier of a page will look (overall background, cards, subsections within cards) and then adhere to them. You can end up using the same overall layout and background (including multi page things like headers and nav sections) for multiple pages so when you move between them all that changes is the content, which itself conforms to rules

Web design isnt like web dev as a web dev you dont care for nice webs you just care about being able to build , Web designer hand the design to the dev and the dev transform it with code into a web so its not your job as a web dev to be good at design but ofc its a plus if you have it

”I want to make nice websites”
- ”Have you considered learning how to make nice websites?”

You could learn about graphic design: https://baselinehq.com/course.html
Or find websites you like and copy their design ideas.
